My rehearsal hours have been running into what is normally my bedtime and I’m rather topsy turvy at the moment. So I’m sharing random photos of Chautauqua, in no particular order. I’ll be sharing more photos with you all week long.
The Fowler-Kellogg Art Center – talk about a magnificent example of Victorian architecture!
A street view: you know that I’m ready to move into that pink cottage with all that incredible detail. (This is a different pink cottage, by the way, not the same one I featured yesterday.)
Bestor Plaza – a lovely park surrounded by shops and the post office. That brick structure you see is the library.
The Literary Arts Center. Chautauqua has a long history with literature. Books are studied throughout the summer, authors come to lecture, there are writing workshops, a literary prize – and Chautauqua has the oldest continuing book club in the country.
This funky little hotel is about two doors down from my favorite pink cottage. Love the retro-looking sign.
Perhaps my favorite piece of information about Chautauqua?
George Gershwin wrote part of his magnificent Concerto in F here.
Really, to know that Gershwin worked here and walked the same paths that I walk? Oh, my goodness – I get such a thrill! This music shack – there are many of them near the theater office where students can practice long into the night if they so choose – is dedicated to him.
Number 38: the age Gershwin was when he died.
We had our first run-through last night and we’ll have another one tonight. The opening festivities for the Chautauqua season are tomorrow.
Happy Saturday.
Linda @ A La Carte says
Love all the photos. You sound a bit tired Claudia, hope you get some good rest and that the run through goes well. I really am smitten with this place.
hugs,
Linda
Rebecca says
How blessed you are to be in that beautiful place! I didn’t realize Gershwin was that young when he died. And the second photo here is my favorite….
Claudia says
Yes, he died tragically of a brain tumor. Imagine what other music he would have written if he had lived.
Claudia says
I am tired, Linda! But I’ll be okay.
Donnamae says
Chautauqua looks so peaceful in those pics…but with festivities starting…I’m sure it will perk up! I didn’t realize Gershwin died so young….he was so talented! Love his music! Enjoy your day…..hope you can get more sleep! ;)
Claudia says
He died of a brain tumor – taken from us much, much too young.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
That was a very fun walk!! The Pink Cottage showed an even more beautiful side to her in this picture.
I bet the cottages are filling up as the season kicks off. Such excitement!
Hope you have a nice and restful day off tomorrow!!
Claudia says
Oh, I probably wasn’t clear – that’s a different pink cottage!
Nancy Blue Moon says
The Art Center looks amazing..and so big..George Gershwin was quite amazing too.. Take care Claudia..
Claudia says
Thanks, Nancy!
Joan says
Claudia, you have made this wonderful place so interesting and I feel like we are there with you.
I must have missed something along the way as I don’t really know what you are doing, why you are there and when you will be traveling back to Mockingbird Hill.
Thanks for sharing with us.
Claudia says
It’s in all the posts about Chautauqua, or nearly all. I’m coaching a production of Our Town here. I’ll be here for another week, Joan.
Janet in Rochester says
I think the word “picturesque” must have been coined just for Chautauqua. Too pretty! The powers-that-be there should consider having a Fall program too. Can you just imagine how gorgeous it is then? Wow. Have a great weekend. :>)
Claudia says
It would be spectacular in the Fall!
Vicki says
Thank you for sharing all of the wonderful cottage photos; I’ve enjoyed them!
Claudia says
I’m glad you’ve enjoyed them, Vicki!
Nancy in PA says
Claudia, the second photograph of the narrow, sun-dappled road is particularly restful and inviting. If possible, please show us more paths and lanes and by-ways. Are you planning another walk to the miniatures shop?
Have you ever been inside the Literary Arts Center or the library? (That kind of seems like a silly question.)
Claudia says
I’ll try to get more photos. Today we’re going through torrential rains and tomorrow will also be rainy.
No, if you can believe it, I haven’t been in the library!
Addie says
Ohhhh!!!!! Be still my heart…..on the second picture!!!! I loved seeing what it looks like down the road view. The tree lined walkway with house after gorgeous house!!!! mmmmm….I would love to have my dog on a leash and just walk up & down taking the view in. Soaking up all the history that has been going on there. That to me is heaven.
Could I ask you a favor, Claudia? Could you take a few more shots of a look down the street….what it is like to actually be walking on the road? Please-pretty please!!!!!
OH!!! how I would love to go into that library too!!! Beauty all around!!!!
Addie
Claudia says
I’ll do my best, Addie!
Addie says
Oh my!!!! I wrote my first comment BEFORE I read what others wrote…..then right above me I see “Nancy in PA” writes she wants more also!!!! AND mentions the 2nd pic!!!! That is too funny…AND I swear I was too excited to write before I read any of the comments!!!
Thank you for sharing!!! these pics!!!!

You’re welcome, Wendy!
Diane says
Such great eye candy architecture there! Your walks through town must be so much fun.
Claudia says
Especially if the weather cooperates!
Mary says
Hi Claudia, chasing my tail whilst trying to catch up with everyone!
Returned from England Friday after a whirlwind visit to London after 10 days in Torquay. Thought of you while touring The Globe Theatre (fabulous), which was next after the Tower of London on Jasmin’s ‘must see’ list. Also walked by the Royal National Theatre several times as it was near our hotel. I have a post up today showing both!
Hope all is well – see you are working and busy – love the ‘cottages’.
Hugs – Mary
Claudia says
So happy you had a great time there, Mary! I’ve been to the Globe (I chaperoned some students who were studying there for two weeks). It’s amazing. And I love the National Theater! I can’t wait until I can go there again. Welcome home!
