Friday. I find that half the time I have no idea what day of the week it is. Though I’m constantly aware of how quickly the weeks fly by. This summer, especially. This summer has definitely had its challenges, but I’m not ready for it to end. This morning I realized I can see changes in the light, changes in the look of the gardens, and the sun comes up a bit later and sets a bit earlier. All signs of the seasonal change to come. Sigh.
I mowed yesterday and did it slowly, constantly monitoring my back. Though, frustratingly, I did feel a twinge in my left lower back when I pulled the cord to start the mower. That hurts a bit today, but my original injury is much, much better. Don took over the mowing when he got home and will finish it up this weekend, so I’ll rest. But it was so good to DO something! My endorphins kicked in, which is always a satisfying feeling.
Two packages arrived in yesterday’s mail:
Cara (a reader of this blog) sent me her copy of Colleen Moore’s Dollhouse – a dollhouse I didn’t get a chance to see when I was in the Chicago area. Thank you so much, Cara!
And Kathy from Iowa (also a reader of this blog) sent me this:
To Kill a Mockingbird in Spanish! I was completely surprised.
I’ve written before on the blog about my desire to collect as many copies of TKAM in foreign languages as I can. When Don was in Prague several years ago to film for PBS, he looked everywhere for one in Czech, but couldn’t find one. Last year, while in Paris, I found an edition written in French. I also found a copy when we were in London. It’s not in another language, but it is a special edition that was printed and published in England and it’s quite lovely.
Now I have one in Spanish! What next? German? Italian? Russian? Greek? Portuguese?
Thanks, Kathy!
The nicest people read this blog! I’m blessed.
It’s a gorgeous day today. I plan on sitting on the porch – carefully – and watching all the birds and bees and insects. I saw a hummingbird yesterday. And I saw Henry the day before that.
Happy Friday.

How sweet of both Cara and Kathy…you are blessed with generous readers, indeed.
The weather, here, is glorious for the second day in a row. We’ll be working outside, after the city tree trimmers get done trimming our terrace trees. We have 5…so it takes awhile. We have edging that we started before all the heat arrived, so we can now finish that job. Then we can finish mulching. Everything all in good time.
Really glad to hear about your back improving….small victories. Sitting on the porch and watching nature sounds like a great idea….we did that yesterday. Enjoy your porch sitting day! ;)

What marvelous gifts! Could you show us some of the pictures of the doll house? (Could be a copyright issue, I suppose.) For some reason I did not know you were collecting different editions of TKAM – we are frequenters of second-hand bookshops everywhere we go, so you can bet I’ll be on the lookout.
I have a trivia question for you – did Don ever appear on a TV sitcom called “Three’s Company”? I was channel surfing last evening, trying to find an update on that dreadful business here about the two fugitives and on a channel that appears to air a lot of reruns, I was sure I saw Don Sparks! (The episode dated from 1983.)

The book is old and many of the photos are faded. You’d be better served by visiting the website of the Museum of Science and Industry, there are lots of great photos there. Here’s the link: https://www.msichicago.org/explore/whats-here/exhibits/colleen-moores-fairy-castle/
Yes, Don was on Three’s Company twice. He had sizeable roles on both episodes and loved working with John Ritter, who was incredibly generous. He made sure Don got the focus in their scenes.

Thank you so much for the link – the “tour” is lovely. What an amazing work of art.

How lovely of Kathy and Cara. I can also look out for foreign language editions of your favourite in second hand book shops on this side of the pond.
We’ve had some seriously heavy thunderstorms this afternoon, so much that it’s rained in through the roof of the Art Gallery (fortunately staff were able to rescue paintings) down the walls and into the lending library below. It’s soaked in the light switches, a computer and telephone so they’ve been disconnected! The building itself is beautiful, built in 1901.
I don’t know if you’re able to receive the BBC Proms season on your Britbox. I’m not really one for classical music, although I do like a few pieces. Every year the John Wilson Orchestra perform and what he does is restore music scores from the hey day of Hollywood. It’s just wonderful to listen to. This year it’s the turn of Warner Bros.
Happy Friday

Oh goodness! That’s a lot of rain! We’ve been through the same thing this week.
I love classical music, but also ‘Pops’ like the Proms and the Boston Pops specialize in. Thanks, Dee Dee.

Lovely books. Its quieter here today with life seeming to slow down a bit now that the kids are back in school. I’ll see them this weekend and hear all about their first week. Tiger is in 3rd grade and Scout started 4 yr old preschool. The time flies and they grow so fast. I had several days of ‘shopping’ with Mom this past week so today is a rest day for sure. Hugs.

How can they be that old already??? Unbelievable. Little Z started second grade this week. xo
