I see sunlight. It’s been pretty dismal here since I got home. Lots of gray skies and, yesterday, lots of rain. Believe me, the sun is welcome. I shot this through the kitchen window (you can see the reflection of my phone.) The snow on the back forty is always the last to melt because it’s a higher elevation.
I really miss my husband. Since I can’t really do anything outside yet, I occupy myself by doing a bit of hand quilting, cleaning and reading. It’s awfully quiet around here and Don’s absence is palpable. He had his first rehearsal yesterday; lots of people to meet, costume and set designs to see, and a read-through of the play. Jimmy Buffett was there.
Don found a Peet’s coffee shop – yes, they have them in California, we had a local Peet’s in San Diego – and he sent me a picture of it. I’m jealous!
The time change makes it difficult for us to talk more than briefly. He didn’t get home last night until I was just about ready to go to bed. It’s the new normal for a few months. But I’m really happy that he’s having this adventure, working on a new musical in a warm and sunny place. I tried to get him to take pictures of his apartment and hopefully he’ll do that when he has some time.
Today? Gathering tax info, mailing it off to our tax person in California, recycling, a trip to the bank.
Thanks for the great discussion yesterday about HGTV. Your comments were so interesting – it seems we are not their demographic. Of course, they wouldn’t be where they are without us, as we were viewers in the early days of the network. But, in the end, it’s a business and they don’t really give a hoot about all of that. So, I’ve moved on.
Here’s to the sun!
A new book review is up on Just Let Me Finish This Page: Conviction by Julia Dahl, one of my favorite authors. Click here to read it.
Happy Wednesday.

There hasn’t been any sun here in many days – and from looking at the extended forecast, nothing but clouds and rain all the way through until April 6. So depressing!
I just read your previous post about HGTV and skimmed the comments. Can’t add anything to all that except that I agree. So tired of Property Brothers and House Hunters – all the same stuff. Used to love Chip and Joanna’s show, but now that’s all the same, too. I think if I see shiplap one more time, I’ll scream!
Your quilt is absolutely gorgeous. You sure are talented!
Claudia says
Oh boy! I agree about the darned shiplap! Enough already!
Thanks, Melanie!

Haha, of course there’s Peet’s in California…that’s where it started. In fact, their new-ish headquarters is in my neck of the suburban woods and when the wind is right, I can smell the coffee roasting!
Claudia says
Oh, I know it started there. I got hooked on it many years ago, while living in Boston. My colleague had lived and worked in Berkeley and she had it shipped to her!

I used to watch HGTV for the craft shows. I won’t tell you that we have had sunshine the last couple of days. We even made it to 70 plus degrees. Now we are in the fifties. I wanted to tell you I love the fabric colors in your quilt. I am looking forward to seeing the finished project. Right now I am cleaning the refrigerator. One of my two least favorite household job. I would rather be reading or quilting. I read your review on the book. I think I will see if our library has any books by the author. Still reading Deborah Crombie’s books. Oh, wanted to tell you there is a quilt book with patterns concerning Highway 66. I don’t know what kind of quilt patterns are in the book but it made me think of you.
Trina says
Claudia
the name of the quilt book is “Get Your Stitch on Route 66” by Christina DeArmond, Eula Lang and Kaye Spitzi. Connecting Threads has it in clearance for under $11. There are embroideries and quilt blocks. Seems it is about the landmarks along Route 66.
Claudia says
Thanks, Trina.
Claudia says
Thanks so much, Trina. I don’t know how long we’ll have the sunshine, so I’m going to enjoy it while I can.

I know your home is quiet without Don. It sounds like a a wonderful adventure for him and I hope you get a chance to go out to Calif. to see him and the new musical. I’ve been doing boring stuff like errands for Mom, taking Sam to the vet for his fluids (poor old thing is hanging in there) and trying to catch up on some housework here. Today I get my permanent crown so I can chew on that side again! I’ll wait a few weeks before I start the crown on the other side. Allergies here are making everyone sneezey, achy, sleepy! Hugs!
Claudia says
Glad you’re getting your crown, Linda. My allergies/sinuses flared up last night and I’m not feeling tip-top today.

Here in RI we had a sun today too…oops there it goes! Taxes, I knew there was something we had to do, luckily short form no thought involved. I don’t mind a nice rainy day though, although the cats hate it. They get cabin fever and start these wrestling sprees all over the house . Funny they always start with a lot of staring first, waiting for the fun to begin is akin to watching grass grow. Forsythia in house for forcing and waiting to see what survived the winter. I received my stuff from Fishs Eddy two days ago so fast…
Claudia says
I long for the days of the short form. Haven’t had that in years. With Don’s residuals, and deductions for being on the road, as well as mine, plus the blog(s) we have quite an involved tax form.
What did you order from Fish’s Eddy, Mary?
Vicki says
I wish I could send you some of our green-green hills, wildflowers and 70-degree, sushine-y, SoCalif days this week…we’ll be warming up and the green will be gone too soon.
You’re doing all the right things to keep busy and just keep plugging away at it. Until June, since January, my husband is gone regularly for days on end for work, so the dog and I have to remember to ‘talk’ to one another since the house often feels like a silent tomb. It’s helping to have windows open right now and listen to the birdies. You’ll feel so good when you can get out in your garden again. All that physical work and mental therapy of planting will make you sleep like a baby at night.
Meant to tell you yesterday that your quilt is so lovely. What a skill to be able to participate in these wonderful home arts. I’m all thumbs these days as my hands are getting more and more arthritic but I am determined to re-start embroidery soon. Every time I use my grandmother’s pillowslips with beautifully-embroidered bluebirds decorating them, it makes my heart swell…and even though she died when I was only age 8, I swear I can remember her work-worn hands.
My mom would have turned age 93 yesterday. We took callas from her yard and placed them on the grave over the weekend. I checked on them Monday and they were such a pretty spot of creamy white; I’m glad we did it; made me feel better. Those lilies have been there since I was a tot and some of the first things she put into the backyard in the 50s; how they’ve grown year after year is, to me, a small miracle over the 60 years. We do nothing for them but they always grow; just spells Easter for me.
Have a nice afternoon; hope that sun stuck around!
Claudia says
Happy Birthday to your mom, Vicki. Bittersweet, I know.
I miss Scout right now. The emptiness of the house is much more evident without her companionship.

Enjoy the sun while you can! We had about 5 hours yesterday and it was glorious. Today we are back to the same dismal clouds and chill. Saturday and Sunday we are expecting sun again. Way too far between on the sunbeams!!
Hope your Wednesday flies by and you can cross another day off of the calendar. Take care…..
Claudia says
We have a little sun and some clouds today. Next week? A lot of rain!

That Jimmy Buffet has a finger in so many pies right now! Here, it’s an over 50 community called Latitude Margaritaville that just broke ground yesterday. It was front page news, with photos of city officials hamming it up, beside themselves with glee! I wish the project the best, but I wouldn’t want to live in a place that wanted a party going on 24-7! Oh, well, different strokes, I know. I do like the music and am looking forward to more about the musical and Don. The quilt is beautiful! I love a quilt with lots of white that really sets off the color pallette!
Claudia says
No, I wouldn’t want to live there either! I like my quiet. But he’s definitely a businessman/entrepreneur!
Donnamae says
Well…Chris told you about our sun situation here…funny! I’m taking a break from spring cleaning today…guess I need the sun to see all the dirt and grime. I went back and read all the comments on yesterday’s post…think you are right…we (over 49) don’t matter to them anymore, even though we made then what they are today. I miss the gardening shows the most…always got some great ideas. Hope you enjoy the rest of your day! ;)
Claudia says
I’d love to watch a gardening show right now, especially as we wait for Spring to finally arrive!

beautiful quilt, claudia … and all that hand-stitching is so impressive!
glad to hear don had a fun drive out west and the work is starting well. hope you will be able to make a few trips out there to see him and the show … and in the meantime can stay as busy as you like while he’s in california.
i am holding onto that idea for a road trip … 66 at 66 (only seven years away) … great idea! glad don could do it.
has to be a fun show and i am sure parrotheads like me will keep it sold out. hope to be able to see it sometime, somewhere! :)
hope you get more sun.

I think everyone should do a 66 on 66 tour!
