What did I say the weather forecast had predicted?
3-6 inches with sleet?
How about 11 inches with sleet? Cause that’s what we got.
Every forecast was wrong. We got walloped. And it came down very quickly, changing to sleet overnight and now – more snow. Unbelievable.
I’m not a real happy camper this morning. It’s too much snow, too early. I don’t know how long it’s going to take to dig ourselves out, but it’s not going to happen quickly.
I’m already over winter and it hasn’t even started yet!
Plus, I’m feeling under the weather with some sort of sinus/cold thing, so that’s not helping my attitude.
Okay. Enough complaining.
These are the times I long for a flat, short driveway. Ah, well.
We have a roof over our head, food in the fridge, more than enough oil to heat the house, power, and I’m in the midst of reading a novel set during the horrors of Hurricane Katrina, and that puts everything in perspective.
You know, we were in the midst of moving to the cottage during Katrina. We had no access to cable and we were so busy unloading and then cleaning our rental that we had no idea of the enormity of that disaster until several days later. It was just awful. And now the horrors of the fires in California. Is this what it’s going to be for the future? Fires, more and more hurricanes, extreme temperatures, permanent seasonal changes?
Praying for lives lost, homes destroyed, brave firefighters, animal rescuers, those who offer shelter, and those who have lost everything.
And for our planet.
Happy Friday.
Julie says
That is a lot of snow before Thanksgiving. Hopefully it will melt quickly.
And ditto to worrying about the planet. So much to take in every day.
God bless the people working on the fires, protecting people, and animals. My heart goes out to them constantly fighting these fires even though some have lost their own homes. And that idiot says it is their fault for the fires. It is really too much.
Claudia says
He responds like a child. He doesn’t like California because they don’t support him, so he lashes out at them.
Debbie Price says
Wow, I won’t even print what I said when I saw the snow in front of your shed! Stay safe and warm and be careful if you shovel. Wow!
Claudia says
We’re exhausted from shoveling and we didn’t even complete it all. It’s heavy, wet snow.
Shanna says
I just love that little red shed in the snow! So festive! Sorry you got buried, though. It’s little consolation, but we have a pretty cold morning down here, too. First of the season. So, we’re welcoming it with sweats, tees with sleeves, and hot coffee. Falalalala, lala, la, la. Stay warm!
Claudia says
Well, I’m sorry to say, it isn’t a consolation! It doesn’t make up for 11 inches of heavy, wet snow, my friend!
Janet K. says
We’ll Claudia, bless your hearts! Sometimes it seems the world had turned into something we no longer recognize. Now we are spending close to 20 million dollars to protect Betsy Devos, the person who wants to dismantle public schools. We have people who have lost everything including their loved ones trying to survive in tent cities in California. That money would be better spent helping those poor souls. Enough venting, stay warm and thanks for all you share. 😊
Claudia says
I despise her. And I’m embarrassed that she’s from my home state of Michigan.
Linda @ A La Carte says
My friend, that is a lot of snow! You and Don be careful as you slowly dig out. We have had cold and rain for days and days. The sun is shining now and I’m going out to shop. Mom and I bought some new sheets last week and they are so comfy I want another set. They were on sale so I hope I can still find some. I’ll make a thrift store drop off and then home to snuggle with Annie and a book! Hugs!
Claudia says
Thanks, Linda. It’s been a long and hard day for us.
Donnamae says
I showed my hubby your pictures….his words are not suitable for printing here. You got walloped! Any chance it’s going to melt quickly?
Settle in for a bit…hope you feel better! Have an extra cup of something warm! ;)
Claudia says
I don’t think it will melt quickly. It will be in the low forties tomorrow, but it’s going to get really cold next week.
linda says
I think we need to be thankful no matter what the weather
My heart is so heavy for the California people who have lost everything
I think right now snow would not matter to them
How do you start over when you have lost everything?
Claudia says
I can’t even begin to imagine.
Belinda says
My goodness that’s s lot of snow but it is so very beautiful. Hope you feel better soon and the snow melts as soon.
Do you guys ever think of moving to warmer climate or us this your preferred forever home?
I know it’s hard living in this climate change today no matter where you live it seems. What are we to do?
Have a blessed day Claudia 😊
Claudia says
We need to be on the East Coast for Don’s career – and mine. We have no desire to move back to California, which would be the only other option. We’re still working professionals.
Thanks, Belinda!
Wendy T says
Having never lived with snow, save for the relatively few times we vacationed at Lake Tahoe, which is not at all the same, I can’t imagine dealing with all the cold slushy stuff that a winter wonderland eventually becomes. You and Don take real care when you start dealing with the snow and your driveway. Glad you got the majority of winter preparation chores done. And hope you feel better, Claudia, and the sinus/cold thing goes away quickly. If you have drippy or clogged sinuses, don’t forget the hot fresh ginger pressed to your forehead and sinus cavities that I described to you months and months ago. I swear, it works to clear the sinuses for some temporary relief. That is, if you can make it out there to buy fresh ginger….
Claudia says
Couldn’t make it out today! We’re still in the process of digging out. It’s very heavy, wet snow.
Chris in sw OH says
Have to say I too was gob-smacked to see your snow accumulation and let out my own expletive. In Ohio we had freezing rain and have lots of downed limbs etc. Still trying to clean up leaves and would have felt beyond overwhelmed if we had gotten any snow accumulation as well. Our turn will no doubt come and much too soon as well!
Yes, horrific tragedies leaving us numb. I pray this group fairs much better with insurance claims than others. Know of a couple in Keys w/ young twin boys in the thick of hurricane a year ago. Authorities ordered immediate removal of drywall due to high humidity causing massive mold issues and now insurance companies refusing to honor claims (or extreme low-ball settlements) because “evidence” of damage was removed before claims agents could get to properties. Continuing to make mortgage payments on literally a “shell” as they also take on expense of attorney to sue insurance company, all while living in a travel trailer. If they ignore mortgage, only serves to strengthen insurance company’s stance in any litigation and invalidates their claim of “harm”. This is repeated endlessly for thousands there and elsewhere I dare say.
Read an article about a year ago of gentleman on east coast suffering same type of issue this many years after hurricane Sandy. Authorities there declared disaster area and ordered immediate demolition for health and safety reasons and many trying to afford attorneys while making house payments on vacant lots.
And our government does nothing. Big insurance refusing claims or low-balling settlements all the while they increase entire country’s premiums w/ each new disaster. If loss of life and limb etc. not bad enough, then the next nightmare begins w/ no end in sight.
Yes, say prayers folks, lots of prayers. And let us all try to be just a little bit kinder if not a whole lot kinder.
Claudia says
To go through such loss and then to have the insurance companies screw you over is too much. What do we pay premiums for?
Marilyn K Schmuker says
We didn’t get that much in west MI…maybe acouple inches. You really got dumped on!
I share your concerns about our planet. Mankind’s greed is likely to destroy us eventually. I try to do my part. We recycle, don’t buy plastic water bottles, etc. but it’s not enough. Discouraging.
Back to the snow…saw a post on facebook that I’m trying to practice this winter.
“If you can’t find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life, and the same amount of snow!”
Stay warm.
Claudia says
I would venture to say the person who said that doesn’t have to shovel heavy, wet snow on a long driveway.
Thanks, Marilyn!
Judy Ainsworth says
Dear Claudia, I Would send my prayer, with your perfect thoughts.
We have just sent another huge caravan of fire fighting equipment,Trucks, water trucks, all manner of fire-rigs along with the needed manpower to operate said equipment + several hundred more. These Noble men and women brought their own sleeping bags, food and every necessity, so as not to lay any heavier burden on the California people. These volunteers took the same “ride” last year missing Thanksgiving at home with their own family,The only comment, was a VERY humble, it’s a small enough sacrifice when you see the unbelievable needs of these people. We have a couple of Wildfires of our own here in Utah. It is so weird to see, frozen ground and branches with fire raging all around.
Now, Your Snow is just Right! . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . .
if it was Christmas Eve. Stay warm my dear and think about your Fab. Trip! Love, and Peace on Earth to you and all of your wonderful friends. Judy A
ps Thank-You once again for the forum. I’ll try to stop doing this.
Claudia says
These firefighters are unselfish heroes. I stand in awe of them.
Don’t worry – I welcome your thoughts here, Judy!
Janet in Rochester says
I’ll say about the Winter what I say about Chunky. I don’t hate it – I just dislike it with the heat of a thousand suns. There, I feel better. And the good news is it’ll melt soon. At least here in Rochester. Forty degrees this weekend. Begone, Winter!!! It’s too soon. Oh and yes, this is EXACTLY what we have to look forward to, weather-wise, in the time of global warming. More severe weather. Colder Winters. Hotter, drier Summers. So for all those nimnulls out there who think climate change is bogus, keep thinking that way. Bury your heads in the sand, because that always works out well, doesn’t it? Jackasses. OK, end of sarcastic rant. Be careful digging out & have a good weekend! Peace.

Claudia says
It will melt a bit here, but we have a LOT of snow, so it won’t get rid of all of it by a long shot. And I think it’s going to be very cold next week.
Deb says
Wow is right! We’ve had three very small snows so far and that was too early for us. I do believe that extremes of many kinds are definitely in our future. Take care!
Claudia says
I do, too, Deb.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
I said a bad word when I saw that picture. ugh. You know how much I dislike each and every flake. I don’t see beauty in it. I see travel delays, back breaking shoveling & snow-blowing, car accidents, slipping on sidewalks and in parking lots, and on and on. And throw in the ice element and there are no words. We do have 3-4 inches forecast for overnight. Again ~~ ugh.
I hope you have good temps coming so a lot of natural melting will happen, which always leads to its own new dimensions of “fun”. Don’t overdo it. Staying in and reading while sipping a hot chocolate sounds lovely! This too shall pass.
Claudia says
I only see beauty in snow on Christmas. I feel like we got cheated out of the delight in a first, gentle snow. This was anything but.
Susan says
I thought our 7 inches of heavy wet snow followed by sleeet and freezing rain was bad until I saw yours. We too have a steep driveway so I can commiserate. However, what I endured yesterday and today shoveling was nothing compared to those in California. Puts it in perspective. Thank you for reminding me of that. Take care Claudia, one shovel at a time.
Claudia says
It does put it in perspective. We’re sore, we’re moaning and groaning, but we’re here, in our house. My heart goes out to California.
Kay says
Oh, dear. Well, it’s pretty anyway. And at least you didn’t need to go anywhere (I saw the pictures in the NY Times with the long traffic jams). Yeah, I sure hope I’m able to look on the bright side when WE eventually get socked in…
Claudia says
We wouldn’t have been able to go anywhere. It took several hours to dig out and we’re still not completely finished! Thanks, Kay.
Chris from Normal says
Claudia, Mother Nature is responding to how we’ve treated her!
Claudia says
She sure is. She’s mad as hell!
Marilyn says
Sorry that you received so much snow. The heavy snow is the worse. The weather report said Central Park had 6-4 inches, but my area received about 3 inches and it has mostly been washed away by the rain. Take it easy digging out. It will eventually melt, since it is predicted for warmer temperatures this week.
Marilyn
Claudia says
Thanks, Marilyn. It was very, very heavy snow.
Tana says
My prayers are the same as yours.
Claudia says
Thank you, Tana.
nancybluemoon says
Yup…8 inches here…snow and ice…not going anywhere…not shoveling very long driveway…sick of cold…sick of wind…hate Winter…beginning to hate Fall…brought in stray cat I take care of so he doesn’t freeze…he seems so grateful…being so sweet and loving…hot coffee, tea and books keeping me sane…trying to avoid looking out windows…take care…
Claudia says
Glad you brought that sweet cat inside, Nancy. Take it easy and stay inside!
Corinne says
Too much snow! I’m in central Wisconsin and we’ve only had a couple dusting so far! Could you tell me the name of the book you are reading? My great uncle lives north of Panama City and was hit extremely hard from this last hurricane. My parents leave for Florida soon and will be visiting them. I’d love to get the book for my dad. Thanks and hope you are feeling better soon!
Claudia says
Well, remember it’s a mystery primarily. It’s just set in New Orleans during and after Katrina. It’s The Tin Roof Blowdown by James Lee Burke.
Corinne says
Thank you!
