A note: I have two posts today. Scroll down for my latest book review and a giveaway.
It’s here.
Somehow, between Monday’s snow and today’s massive snowfall (10 inches and counting so far) the delivery was scheduled for yesterday…the only snow-free day so far this week.
The delivery guys were a bit strange…no small talk with these rather unhappy, cigarette smoking delivery men. I liked the first two guys that delivered the wrong size bed better. Scowls from the first guy, hemming and hawing about whether he could get the bed up the stairs. (I always knew they could.) Don ended up helping them with the mattress and I helped them with the box springs.
And there it is. As soon as they left, Don and I fell on the bed, just like little kids. We love it. Although I always seem to take a couple of days to adjust to a new bed. This bed’s pillow top is such a contrast to what we had that it will take some getting used to.
I plan to make a slipcover for that headboard with the fabric that was on the old headboard. Wait and see.
Here it is, dressed in its finest. At least so far.
I got the coverlet from Garnet Hill – a one day sale at half off. That price was about $60. Though I had wanted something aqua, this was such a good deal that I went for it. And I find myself really liking the gold. The texture is silky and gorgeous. It warms up the room so beautifully.
I bought a longer dust ruffle, which I was afraid would be too long. But it works! Overstock, about $28.
The throw pillow on the left: HomeGoods, $20. The one on the right I already had. The quilt? You know all about that. My only complaint is about the sheets, which are Rachel Ashwell/Target sheets. I love that they are cotton and they are extremely cool to the touch, which makes this woman who runs hot very happy. The fitted sheet is great. But why the heck do top sheets always run small? This has happened to me more than once. I can barely tuck in it on the sides of the bed. This is a 12 1/2 inch deep mattress, but most beds nowadays are that deep. Maybe top sheet sizes should be rethought? Just a suggestion, Rachel Ashwell.
Delivery was around 3:00, so these photos were taken later in the day.
What do you think?
Happy Wednesday.
Joy@aVintageGreen says
Whew! Done. Great bed, Doesn’t crowd the room. The color works well, Have a great day getting things back the way you want them.
Joy
Claudia says
I will. But first, I have to shovel. And shovel. And shovel.
Debby Messner says
It is beautiful Love the gold with the pillows and quilt. From a person that finally got a new mattress after 20 plus years……..I feel your joy. Yeah. Sleep tight.
Claudia says
I know you understand, Debby!
Terri says
I know you are so glad this is DONE! I like the gold coverlet. It makes the room look sunny :)
I have the same complaint about top sheets. I’ve also run into it with blankets. I’m quite sure this is a cost cutting measure. It’s like fabric that used to be 45″ is now 42″. So irritating!
Claudia says
I’m sure you’re right, Terri – I’m sort of sick of cost cutting measures, aren’t you?
Linda Spencer says
I am so happy for you!! The color of the spread is gorgeous and matches so well with your pillows and quilt!! Get a great rest on it. God bless you as you shovel all that snow. Linda
Claudia says
Oh my heavens, it was hard shoveling. Thank goodness our neighbor across the street brought his snow blower over and helped us with part of the driveway. Even so, it was back breaking. We got about a foot of snow.
Susan says
Love it! That bed looks very inviting, for a long winter’s nap…….
Claudia says
Especially right now – I just got in from shoveling.
Betsy says
Love it! Especially the bed skirt as I’m partial to all things lacey,
Blessings,
Betsy
Claudia says
It’s very pretty – a simple cut-out design. I like a bit of interest in a bedskirt.
Donnamae says
What do I think? I think it’s gorgeous! Your coverlet is a perfect color…sort of acts as a neutral…and goes so well with those pillows. As far as the sheets are concerned…I always have a problem with sheets. I actually got my last set from Sam’s Club…I think they were hotel sized…and plenty big for a king size mattress. Be careful shoveling….that’s a lot of snow! We managed to skate by with only a 1/2 inch! ;)
Claudia says
A foot here, Donna. AND, it just started snowing again!
Debra says
I love your headboard. I have the same type and I have seasonal slipcovers, something cozier for the winter and a light pink ticking stripe for the summer. You will enjoy being able to change your headboard any time you want. And the bed looks comfy!
Claudia says
I’m thinking of making a couple of them as well, Debra. The fabric on there right now is an off-white canvas.
Lorrie says
I think HOORAY! Your bed looks cozy and welcoming. Love the bright floral pillows with the gold coverlet. And your quilt. Perfection. Sheets – don’t get me started. They are never big enough.
Don’t spend all day in the bed!
Claudia says
Oh, I couldn’t, Lorrie. We had over a foot of snow to shovel!
Missy says
Finally..Congratulations..It looks great ..love the colors..Will be interested to hear how well you slept..I hope, I hope…
Claudia says
I slept pretty well. I always have a bit of a problem adjusting to a new mattress, so I expect it to feel different for a few days. Then I’ll be used to it.
Denise says
I’m so happy you finally got your bed! I know you are relieved to finally be able to start getting your house in order. Please be careful out there shoveling all that snow. We had freezing rain overnight and everything was covered in ice this morning. Now that the temperature is up a bit we’re getting a steady rain making it a very dreary day.
Claudia says
We had a foot of snow, Denise, And it just started snowing again!! I’m over winter.
My Little Home and Garden says
I do like a happy ending. The bed looks great all dressed up and looking pretty!
Karen
Claudia says
Thank you, Karen!
Casey says
Claudia, It was worth waiting for. It is beautiful. Your quilt adds the finishing touch! I hope it sleeps as good as it looks.
Claudia says
It does, Casey!
Kelly says
Beautiful! It is well worth the wait and inconvenience. You pulled it all together fantabulously!
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Kelly!
Janet in Rochester says
The older I get, the more I find products that are smaller, lighter or just generally less than they once were. Now, unless you actually ORDER a pound of something, you get about 14 ounces in a package of Whatever. Good grief!! I can vaguely remember my mom complaining from time to time about the same thing as she aged – maybe this is just an inevitable part of getting older [sigh]. Well, anyway, your new bed looks lovely and well done on the great deals – they make it even better. And how did we sleep?? I’m guessing VERY COMFORTABLY, with plenty of room to stretch toes and relax.
Claudia says
I think it is inevitable, but I do think we are paying more for less nowadays. I don’t like it one bit! I slept fairly well. I had a problem going to sleep – maybe I was just too hyped up.
Jane says
This is wonderful, Claudia! Definitely worth the weight. I love the quilts and pillows, very pretty and snuggly! :)
XO,
Jane
Claudia says
Oh, thanks so much, Jane!
Teresa says
That looks so comfortable! I bet you are going to love it. I hate when delivery people are like that. When my mattress was delivered they spoke Spanish to each other. Never said a word to me, except to ask where I wanted them to put the mattress. I think that is just rude.
Teresa says
Sorry hit post before I was finished. Wouldn’t that have been funny if I understood and could speak Spanish! I think all delivery people should also be dressed proffessionally. Not low ride pants and baggy old shirts. Of course if they have to provide their own uniforms if might not have been affordable for them. I don’t know what delivery people get paid. I know that people at my job sometimes can only afford one uniform until they get a few checks.
Claudia says
They were a bit surly and Don and I are always very friendly and cheery when repairmen or delivery men come to the house. I couldn’t do anything to get these guys to lighten up.
Linda @ A La Carte says
I know you are so happy to have your new bed! Love the gold, it’s almost a neutral so you can add the pops of color in the pillows and quilt throw! It looks wonderful! Careful with that snow shoveling!
Claudia says
All done. Back is sore – we had over a foot, so you can imagine how hard it was to shovel.
tracy says
So pretty! love the gold coverlet with your quilt….and the light is beautiful in your room. Enjoy!
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Tracy.
Kay says
I have had good luck with Martha Stewart from Macy’s for sheets. Even better is the hotel collection if you watch the sales. I got $300 sheets for $100. A lot of money I know but they are worth every penny. Very generous size, silky and smooth.
Claudia says
Thanks, Kay – Hotel collections sound like the answer. And silky is great!
Melanie says
Hooray – it looks wonderful both “undressed” and all made up! I like the gold coverlet. I think that color is actually better with the colorful pillows and quilts on it. Kinda of neutral, but yet warm and cheery. We have the same problem with top sheets. They’re never long enough to tuck in between the mattress and the box spring. Drives me nuts.
Claudia says
Drives me nuts, too. Not to mention that it’s hard to find a Cal King blanket that doesn’t cost the moon, so I went with a KIng sized blanket. Not ideal.
Michelle says
Love it…it looks so comfortable…my mattres is 17 years old…so…am drooling over this new mattress.
Claudia says
Ours was 18 years old, so I definitely feel your pain, Michelle! Hope you can get a new one soon.
Sue says
Love your new bed! The colors look rich, warm, and happy. We got only 6 inches of snow last night. Love that snow blower and the man, my husband, behind it.
Claudia says
We got a foot. Not fun! Our neighbor, who has a snow blower, helped us out a bit and we are very grateful.
Debbie says
I love the coverlet … looks like it could go with most any color you choose. I’ve had the same problem with the top sheet being too small. For that reason I buy my sheets in separates – I buy a double fitted sheet and a queen top sheet and it works perfectly. Not really an option for a California king I guess! :/
Claudia says
No, it isn’t! I’ll find something better eventually, Debbie.
Chris k in Wisconsin says
It looks fabulous!! Love the gold. I also really like the bed skirt!
After what you went through, I don’t know if I even want to mention this, but we have bought our sheets from QVC for the last 8 years. They are GENEROUS in their fit. We have a pillow mattress and the fitted sheet never flips off the corners. They are very deep. We think the top sheets are better fit, also. I always look for clearance and we have never been disappointed so far.
It seems like everything in the grocery stores are shrinking, too. Used to be 16 oz. pasta, baking chips, are now all 14 oz or less. Same w/ some canned goods. So many recipes still use the “old” measurements of what we used to be able to buy in their ingredients, I have noticed in a couple of recipes a bit of a difference such as “it never used to end up this dry, etc.” and I think it is due to the differences in the quantity of ingredients we now get in the same packaging.
Boy, that sure was off bed topic!!!!!
Have fun tweaking it all now!! Be careful shoveling all of that awful stuff. Hang on for another tumble of temps which is likely heading your way from ours, too. And the fun continues…..
Claudia says
I have ordered sheets from QVC before and I like them. In fact, I looked there first but the one that were available in Cal King were either not right or were poorly reviewed, so I held off. But I am definitely going to keep my eye out for a sale there and buy some roomier ones.
Nancy Blue Moon says
That mattress looks sooooo comfy..Beautiful gold cover..everything fits together so well..I hope it is everything you both wished for!
Claudia says
Me too, Nancy. Have to get used to it, but I expect I will be thoroughly spoiled in a few days. Don LOVED being able to stretch out and still have his feet on the mattress!
Annette Tracy says
I know when I got my new Calf King mattress w/the pillow top for weeks I’d get into bed and settle down with a big smile on my face thinking: I can’t believe this is my bed! You’ll love it. The gold is perfect with your quilt. Enjoy!
Claudia says
Did the pillow top take some getting used to, Annette? I find it’s SO different from what I was sleeping on before that it’s rather shocking! But in a good way.
Carolyn Marie says
Beautiful! I actually like the plain off white headboard because the emphasis is then on the gorgeous bedding. I love, love the quilt that you made and I think the gold coverlet is the perfect choice. Sweet dreams!
Claudia says
Thank you, Carolyn. It’s funny, I had my doubts about the gold color but it was such a good price that I thought I could make it work. Now, I LOVE it!
Tana says
Fantastic!! I am with you on the top sheets being way too small. If they didn’t sell sheets in sets I would buy a king size top sheet for my queen size bed. I already buy king size blankets. With two of us in the bed we get enough blanket which we don’t with queen size blankets. I have to live with the queen size sheets. Oh well.
Congratulations, the bed and all the bedding look beautiful!
Tana
Claudia says
I had to buy a King blanket, but it’s not ideal. I’m keeping my eye out for a Cal King blanket on sale someday,
Claudia E says
I love the whole look! Beautiful!
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Claudia!
LuvWheaties says
I love the gold! I think it really warms up the room, and your pieced quilt really pops at the foot of the bed. I hope you like sleeping on the Rachel Ashwell sheets, since I recommended them. I have grown to appreciate the way they stay cool. Funny, I hadn’t thought much about not being able to tuck the top sheet in at the sides, as I like a top sheet without much drop, because I DON’T like having to tuck the sheets in! Here’s to a good night’s sleep.
Claudia says
I do like sleeping on them, Sandra – very much. Just wish that darn top sheet was larger!
Pat says
I love it! I really like the color of the bed spread. It works well as a neutral in the space and with your pillows and the aqua accents. Enjoy your new bed!
Oh and I really like the third picture– it looks so inviting in your room.
Pat
Claudia says
Thanks, Pat. It was a long time coming but now we can relax! The house is getting back in order, too.
Diane says
Your bed arrived, finally. It looks great in your room and those pillow tops can be quite comfortable. Your gold coverlet is so pretty and blends well with the turquoise and your quilt. Also like the pretty dust ruffle. I agree with everyone that they are cutting back on quality so they don’t have to raise prices as much. I would rather still have the quality and higher prices! I’ve noticed it in so many things I buy lately, and I can relate to the size of top sheets too. Enjoy your new bed. You’ll really be able to stretch out on it, it’s huge!
Claudia says
It’s huge and comfortable and wonderful!
Laura says
Love it. Let the snow fall. You will be nice and comfy tucked up in your new bed. xo Laura
Claudia says
Oh, and we were, Laura!
debi says
Love the color choices you’ve made, your bed looks very warm and cozy. Beautiful!!
Claudia says
Thanks so much, Debi!
Lin says
Yay! All better. See? Everything will be fine in the end!
xo,
Lin
Claudia says
Oh, and it’s so comfy, Lin!
Dawn says
I think it looks perfect and adding aqua touches with the gold will be wonderful, maybe a little red too. I always buy my sheet from Garnett Hill and they are a very generous cut, maybe try them next time. I bet you are so glad to be getting things in order again.
Claudia says
Garnet Hill’s sheets were just too expensive for me, Dawn. I bet they are great and maybe someday I’ll catch some for half off.
The Quintessential Magpie says
Looks great, Claudia, and I particularly love the new dust ruffle. The gold is good, too, and you know I love the quilt and pillows.
I am worried about your back. I cringed when I read you helped them get it up there.
xo
Sheila
Claudia says
Oh a split box spring is nothing! They are very light. It’s the snow shoveling you should worry about – that is very hard on my back!
Mary says
All looks cozy and comfy Claudia……….worth waiting for I’m sure. Good nights of sound sleep ahead hopefully.
Love the bedding – I never use the top sheets with a duvet – but do love RA’s cottons, they are so smooth. Of course Target’s are her regular line, I buy them, but she has the luxury sheets in her shops and online but I’ve never bought them as they really are expensive. Perhaps they run larger/longer being more costly. My dream is to have a set of pure linen sheets from Tricia Rose in California – some day I’ll splurge – at least on the fitted sheet!
Enjoy your new luxury bed and sleep well.
Are you really getting all that snow again? Good grief, when will it end?
Hugs – Mary
Claudia says
Over a foot, Mary. It’s endless. We don’t use a duvet – I don’t like the bulk and I run hot – so top sheets it is!
Bama (Carolyn) says
You have made the new bed even better by your wonderful touches and style. I hope it sleeps as well as it looks. It takes me awhile to get used to a new bed as well. Sweet dreams!
Haworth says
Praise the gods! I’m so glad for you that it arrived, Claudia. I hope you rest well and enjoy it. It looks beautiful in your room. I love the gold coverlet and the eyelet ruffle. I’ve had the same problem with top sheets. I have a double bed and have been buying Queen sized top sheets when I can so they can really tuck in. But I guess that wouldn’t work if you have the largest size bed. :(
An Enchanted Cottage says
How did I miss this post, Claudia! I absolutely LOVE the cheery yellow spread and your new bed! The pillow top mattress looks heavenly! I’m so glad you finally have a comfy mattress, and that you were able to upgrade from a queen (double lately) to a king! And I can’t believe we will be downsizing from a king to a queen. I’m not sure this is going to go well at all as we are both ‘sprawlers.’ Wish us luck!! Many pleasant dreams to you and Don!
Donna
Susan says
Hi Claudia,
I have really enjoyed catching up on your blog. So glad you finally got your new mattress; we replaced ours in November and are sleeping much better.
I bought sheets from Target from the new Threshold line they have. The top sheet is a bit short on the sides, just coming to the bottom of the mattress on both sides, but oh they feel wonderful. And the bottom sheet is a dream for a girl whose hubby can somehow pull the corner up at night. These babies have a deep, deep gusset for the corners and they stay put!
I am sorry we all seem to be having grey days. We are expecting ice and snow here in North Mississippi for the next two days and we are ill-prepared for such. I cannot imagine having it all winter long.
May Spring rear its beautiful head soon.
Susan
