It’s Here

February 5, 2014 at 10:34 am by Claudia

A note: I have two posts today. Scroll down for my latest book review and a giveaway.

It’s here.

Somehow, between Monday’s snow and today’s massive snowfall (10 inches and counting so far) the delivery was scheduled for yesterday…the only snow-free day so far this week.

The delivery guys were a bit strange…no small talk with these rather unhappy, cigarette smoking delivery men. I liked the first two guys that delivered the wrong size bed better. Scowls from the first guy, hemming and hawing about whether he could get the bed up the stairs. (I always knew they could.) Don ended up helping them with the mattress and I helped them with the box springs.

itcame

And there it is. As soon as they left, Don and I fell on the bed, just like little kids. We love it. Although I always seem to take a couple of days to adjust to a new bed. This bed’s pillow top is such a contrast to what we had that it will take some getting used to.

I plan to make a slipcover for that headboard with the fabric that was on the old headboard. Wait and see.

Here it is, dressed in its finest. At least so far.

bed2

I got the coverlet from Garnet Hill – a one day sale at half off. That price was about $60. Though I had wanted something aqua, this was such a good deal that I went for it. And I find myself really liking the gold. The texture is silky and gorgeous. It warms up the room so beautifully.

I bought a longer dust ruffle, which I was afraid would be too long. But it works! Overstock, about $28.

bed4

bed3

The throw pillow on the left: HomeGoods, $20. The one on the right I already had. The quilt? You know all about that. My only complaint is about the sheets, which are Rachel Ashwell/Target sheets. I love that they are cotton and they are extremely cool to the touch, which makes this woman who runs hot very happy. The fitted sheet is great. But why the heck do top sheets always run small? This has happened to me more than once. I can barely tuck in it on the sides of the bed. This is a 12 1/2 inch deep mattress, but most beds nowadays are that deep. Maybe top sheet sizes should be rethought? Just a suggestion, Rachel Ashwell.

Delivery was around 3:00, so these photos were taken later in the day.

What do you think?

Happy Wednesday.

I have the same complaint about top sheets. I’ve also run into it with blankets. I’m quite sure this is a cost cutting measure. It’s like fabric that used to be 45″ is now 42″. So irritating!

What do I think? I think it’s gorgeous! Your coverlet is a perfect color…sort of acts as a neutral…and goes so well with those pillows. As far as the sheets are concerned…I always have a problem with sheets. I actually got my last set from Sam’s Club…I think they were hotel sized…and plenty big for a king size mattress. Be careful shoveling….that’s a lot of snow! We managed to skate by with only a 1/2 inch! ;)

We had freezing rain overnight and everything was covered in ice this morning. Now that the temperature is up a bit we’re getting a steady rain making it a very dreary day.

The older I get, the more I find products that are smaller, lighter or just generally less than they once were. Now, unless you actually ORDER a pound of something, you get about 14 ounces in a package of Whatever. Good grief!! I can vaguely remember my mom complaining from time to time about the same thing as she aged – maybe this is just an inevitable part of getting older [sigh]. Well, anyway, your new bed looks lovely and well done on the great deals – they make it even better. And how did we sleep?? I’m guessing VERY COMFORTABLY, with plenty of room to stretch toes and relax.

Sorry hit post before I was finished. Wouldn’t that have been funny if I understood and could speak Spanish! I think all delivery people should also be dressed proffessionally. Not low ride pants and baggy old shirts. Of course if they have to provide their own uniforms if might not have been affordable for them. I don’t know what delivery people get paid. I know that people at my job sometimes can only afford one uniform until they get a few checks.

It looks fabulous!! Love the gold. I also really like the bed skirt!
After what you went through, I don’t know if I even want to mention this, but we have bought our sheets from QVC for the last 8 years. They are GENEROUS in their fit. We have a pillow mattress and the fitted sheet never flips off the corners. They are very deep. We think the top sheets are better fit, also. I always look for clearance and we have never been disappointed so far.
It seems like everything in the grocery stores are shrinking, too. Used to be 16 oz. pasta, baking chips, are now all 14 oz or less. Same w/ some canned goods. So many recipes still use the “old” measurements of what we used to be able to buy in their ingredients, I have noticed in a couple of recipes a bit of a difference such as “it never used to end up this dry, etc.” and I think it is due to the differences in the quantity of ingredients we now get in the same packaging.
Boy, that sure was off bed topic!!!!!
Have fun tweaking it all now!! Be careful shoveling all of that awful stuff. Hang on for another tumble of temps which is likely heading your way from ours, too. And the fun continues…..

I have ordered sheets from QVC before and I like them. In fact, I looked there first but the one that were available in Cal King were either not right or were poorly reviewed, so I held off. But I am definitely going to keep my eye out for a sale there and buy some roomier ones.

Also like the pretty dust ruffle. I agree with everyone that they are cutting back on quality so they don’t have to raise prices as much. I would rather still have the quality and higher prices! Love the bedding – I never use the top sheets with a duvet – but do love RA’s cottons, they are so smooth. Of course Target’s are her regular line, I buy them, but she has the luxury sheets in her shops and online but I’ve never bought them as they really are expensive. Perhaps they run larger/longer being more costly. My dream is to have a set of pure linen sheets from Tricia Rose in California – some day I’ll splurge – at least on the fitted sheet!

Enjoy your new luxury bed and sleep well.
Are you really getting all that snow again? Good grief, when will it end?

How did I miss this post, Claudia! I absolutely LOVE the cheery yellow spread and your new bed! The pillow top mattress looks heavenly! I’m so glad you finally have a comfy mattress, and that you were able to upgrade from a queen (double lately) to a king! And I can’t believe we will be downsizing from a king to a queen. I’m not sure this is going to go well at all as we are both ‘sprawlers.’ Wish us luck!! Many pleasant dreams to you and Don!

    Hi Claudia,
I have really enjoyed catching up on your blog. So glad you finally got your new mattress; we replaced ours in November and are sleeping much better.
I bought sheets from Target from the new Threshold line they have. The top sheet is a bit short on the sides, just coming to the bottom of the mattress on both sides, but oh they feel wonderful. And the bottom sheet is a dream for a girl whose hubby can somehow pull the corner up at night. These babies have a deep, deep gusset for the corners and they stay put!
I am sorry we all seem to be having grey days. We are expecting ice and snow here in North Mississippi for the next two days and we are ill-prepared for such. I cannot imagine having it all winter long.
May Spring rear its beautiful head soon.
    Susan

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
