Easter is less than a week away and I am aware that I haven’t done any egg cup posts. The truth is, I don’t have a whole lot of energy for taking that on, but I will highlight them in groups. For those of you who are newer readers of the blog, I collect egg cups. I have a rather large collection now, my favorites being figural egg cups – the kind with little bunnies and chicks and dogs and pigs. While I’m sure some of the figurals were used, I suspect they were meant as gifts to display.
Though, now that I think of it, I distinctly remember using this egg cup, given to me as a child by my godparents:
This was one of a series of egg cups that were made for Fanny Farmer. They came as a gift, with candy inside the cup. I held onto this cup for years and years (let’s face it: and years) until one day I read an article in Martha Stewart Living about collecting egg cups. The lead photo in the article showed several egg cups and one of them was exactly like mine!
Bingo. I’m a collector at heart and after reading the article, I was hooked. eBay hadn’t been in existence all that long but it was a treasure trove of figural egg cups. I found myself in more than one middle-of-the-night bidding war. The good figurals are much harder to find nowadays.
Side note: After we moved east in 2001, and I had some spare time on my hands, I discovered two of my favorite things to collect: egg cups and McCoy Pottery. I blame Martha Stewart for both. And my neighbor, who had a great collection of McCoy that I lusted after.
Anyway.
The shelves in the first photo contain some traditional egg cups, a few transferware egg cups – one of them very old ironstone, egg cups from Prague, which Don brought back home after filming there, figural egg cups, including two ‘Walking Ware’ egg cups (the ones with shoes), and another Fanny Farmer egg cup, the one on the left on the second shelf. That egg cup is quite heavy and was made for Fanny Farmer by…wait for it…McCoy Pottery. The words “Fanny Farmer” are on the side of the egg cup.
When I first began collecting, I found that shelf you see in the first picture and it contained all my egg cups. Now, they are scattered all over the house. On the mantel right above my desk, on the bookshelves in the den, in various china cabinets and on a little hanging shelf in the den. I’ll share them with you in groups, and I won’t go into too much detail, unless you want me to.
There are many times I wish I had more space here and one of the reasons is that I have a secret desire to find one big piece that would hold all my egg cups. Wouldn’t that be neat?
If you have any questions about egg cups in general or a particular egg cup, feel free to ask in the comments.
This particular bug seems to fluctuate – yesterday I felt much better, today, not so much. It’s working its way out of my system, though.
Begone, foul bug!
Happy Monday.

Hope the foul bug hurries up and leaves for good. I always love seeing your egg cups. xo Laura

Thank you Laura!

Pictures of your egg cup collection are a sure sign of Spring. I always enjoy seeing them. I was in a thrift store in Tulsa a few weeks ago and they had a china cabinet full of McCoy pottery. It was fun to see so many pieces together and it looked so pretty. I can see how you could get hooked on collecting McCoy!
Claudia says
Oh, what fun to see all of that McCoy! Thanks, Karen!

I am delighted to see your egg cups! I was just thinking about them last week…but figured with you being under the weather, they might not appear. And here they are…the cutest! I would love to collect them…but I have to live vicariously through you. I simply cannot start another collection. I think a larger cabinet for all of them is a terrific idea. You can just move a few things around the cottage…lol!
Sorry to hear your ‘bug’ isn’t leaving…maybe the warmer weather this week will help with that. Take care! ;)
Claudia says
Don came home for the day and that helped. I needed a little husband-care!
Donnamae says
Super!! ;)

I had to glance at the pictures very quickly because I started collections of miniature vases and a certain style/color of McCoy pottery (not one you collect, the green and brown as in the Rustic line, although I love all the colors you collect too) and it is all YOUR fault! ;) Egg cups would be another great collection. I collect some jadeite pieces, miniature restaurant creamers, and ironstone butterpats too. Oh yeah, Wade miniatures too.
Claudia says
I’m an enabler, Laura. What can I say? I love inspiring others to collect. Love the rustic line. Thanks!

My husband used to bring back snow globes for my daughters when he returned from business trips. I bought narrow shelves from IKEA and mounted them around their rooms at door height. Then used non-slip shelf liners like those used on boats so the snow globes wouldn’t fall (even though there was a lip on the front of the shelves). I wouldn’t necessarily place these shelves that high for an egg cup collection, but the shelves were inexpensive and one could paint or stain them.
I collected miniatures of cats on or about various pieces or furniture or with items (one was in a trombone case). I found them in England in the 80’s but the company no longer exists. I have quite a few pieces and they are in a curio cabinet that hangs on the wall. I made the curio cabinet from a kit sold by a company that precut all the wood and everything one needed was in the kit, including the finishing materials but except the tools. My cabinet is mahogany with a dark stain and a glass door. Unfortunately, this company no longer exists either.
Claudia says
I don’t want to build shelves, though all your solutions are wonderful! I’d love to find an old vintage piece. But wall space is at a premium around here! Thanks, Wendy.
Janet in Rochester says
My Mom collected china and glass but nothing in particular like egg cups. Just things that caught her eye, things she considered pretty. She did end up with a lot of teacup & saucer sets [I have the ones with violets on them now because I ADORE violets]. She liked Depression glass too but only bought pieces she knew she could use, like candy dishes, platters etc. We did have some beautiful buffet tables when Mom entertained & would bring out her platters [she loved to cook for a crowd]. I can still see my high school graduation cake on a pink “Miss America” Depression glass cake plate. Really really pretty [and pink’s my favorite color]. A pox upon your pox! Can’t believe it dares to raise its ugly, misshapen head again. Take it easy & rest today. Everything’s melting here & I’m loving it. Peace. ☀️

I have a few pieces of depression glass and they are so lovely! My grandmother collected tea cups and saucers and I have some of them packed away somewhere! Thank you Janet!

I, too, have become a collector due to Martha Stewart’s influence. I saw Jadite in her magazine or show and boom, now I have a collection! I found one piece of depression glass, identified it, and now I have a collection. It must be a catching disease.
Claudia says
Love, love jadeite. I’ve been tempted, but I’ve managed to hold off so far! Thanks, Jan!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Tell that crud you have to go away! Hope you feel better soon. I always enjoy seeing your egg cup collection. Mine has been spread out here and there but I love the one’s I have so much but haven’t added to the collection in a long time. You have me now collecting McCoy and Roseville pottery so it’s you I blame…er THANK not Martha!
Claudia says
Meet Claudia the Enabler! That’s me! Thanks, Linda.
Tana says
Lovely collection of egg cups. I have my fair share, but they are not antiques. Glad you are feeling better. We have had some crappy bugs going around this year.
Tana says
Oh, forgot. I love your little lamb with the pointy hat. I smile every time I see it.
Claudia says
Thank you, Tana!
Claudia says
You’re not kidding. This thing is hanging on and I’m ready for it to move on!
Chy says
Great post today Claudia, even when you’re not feeling well. Hope you can continue to rest.
I will share that I am now a collector of dollhouses and it’s all your fault! Okay, not your fault but my husband does not to say that we built our art studio “just to store the dollhouses and all the stuff needed to fix them up” …. I agree. My first dollhouse happened, by accident (I wasn’t looking yet, just thinking about finding a dollhouse to recreate) and I snatched it up – $25 by someone who purchased it but then didn’t have time to finish. It’s been fun and I’m not nearly as creative nor fast at the process but loving having a project on the go for those dreary, rainy, cold, windy days. Thank you for the inspiration!
X Chy
Claudia says
See? I think there are three comments on here blaming me! (Seriously, I love inspiring others to collect!)
You’re welcome, Chy!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
So happy to see your egg cups again. I put mine out for Easter, but I only have about 12 of them, and I do love each one. Nothing at all like the many that you have. So fun to see them another year!
Hope as the day progresses you do, too. Still too cold outside here to do anything. I just walked through the yard and did not see any signs of my plants waking up, except for the rhubarb. And I don’t like rhubarb! We do have rain in the forecast tonight, so that might help. Take care, kiddo.
Claudia says
We have rain coming up tomorrow and the next day. We need some green! Thanks, Chris!
Nancy Blue Moon says
I always enjoy egg cup time!…Feel better Claudia…I know that I would if I could just get this gunk out of my lungs…blah
Claudia says
Me too! This thing doesn’t want to leave! Feel better, Nancy!

I always enjoy seeing your egg cups this time of year. I was thinking about them just the other day.
I hope you feel better quickly!
Claudia says
Me too. I’m so tired of it! Thanks, Lily!
Nancy says
Google the word “pocillovy.” I am an antique dealer and thought this word might be of interest to an egg collector like you. Feel better.
Claudia says
I know that word! I learned of it when I first started collecting, Thanks so much, Nancy!
Marilyn says
Your display of the egg cups is so cute and cheery. I did mention to you in the past that we have the little chicks with the open back. My sister placed a plastic colored egg in each one. Hope you are feeling better once and for all.
Marilyn
Claudia says
I have some eggs in some of my egg cups, as well. Thanks, Marilyn!
Vicki says
I always love seeing all your collections but the egg cups are very special. They’re such great collectibles because they don’t take up a lot of space and there seems to be SO much variety/styles. From a function standpoint, I’ve actually never used them, but I ‘heart’ them because they are so unusual and darling (yours are anyway!). I always hope I’ll stumble upon a vintage one for you; I see a lot of repros but I know you collect only vintage.
Claudia says
Yes, I like vintage! Thanks so much, Vicki!
kathy in iowa says
lovely egg cups, lovely post. thanks for taking time to share, especially when you don’t feel well yet.
i, too, am a collector. keeping a coin collection and books from childhood, but looking to sell collections of snowglobes and perpetual calendars because i collect swedish dala horses, ocean water (in cute little white-lidded spice jars from world market) and coins from travels, t-shirts from jimmy concerts, things with my family’s name on it … just a few things … ha!
fun to hear and see what people collect.
keep healing!

What a wonderful collection you have. I do not have any egg cups, but my grandmother had some. I remember that whenever I saw her using them it brought a smile to my face. Thank you for sharing your great collection.
