Juggling Projects

February 26, 2013 at 9:29 am by Claudia

Do you ever find yourself juggling projects?

I seem to be doing a lot of that lately. I’m hand quilting the bed quilt and I can see the end in the not-so-far-off distance. But then I have to leave it to crochet some scarves. Which I then leave to try my hand at some new crochet flower patterns that I might use for garlands.

But I have two books to review: one next week and one the week after. So I have to make sure I allow time for book reading.

And then a customer orders one of my Crochet Flower Garlands and I have to crochet the flowers, since I make them to order.

Then I discover this quilt that I made in San Diego as part of a Quilt Along and my attention is diverted once more. You can see that I’ve hand quilted quite a bit of it already. That happened a few years ago. But there’s more to go.

It measures 58 inches by 69 inches in its unfinished state. I’m not sure what the heck I’ll do with it when it’s finished, but the project grew out of a six month long stint in San Diego where I knew I had to make something or go crazy. That’s when my dear friend Ingrid, who is a costume designer, lent me her Featherweight. (And when I fell in love with Featherweights.) I found a Quilt Along online. I didn’t have any of my fabric stash with me, so I bought a jelly roll of pretty fabric and some more for the border and back. I also pieced the bed quilt during that same time.

Very, very simple, but nicely graphic pattern.

I love the fabrics. It won’t take long to finish the hand quilting. It might be too large to use as a wall hanging, though that’s what I’d love to do with it.

Stop right there, Claudia. You have books to read, another quilt to finish first, scarves to crochet and a script to work on.

Not to mention a house to clean, errands to run, Etsy packages to mail and a dog that needs a bath.

Psst. Don’t tell him, but I don’t work quite as efficiently when Don is here. My rhythm gets out of whack. He’s distracting.

Do you find yourself in the same situation? Juggling projects? Perhaps a little ADD about the whole thing? Please share.

Oh, and speaking of projects, there are two new scarves in the shop. I don’t know what the weather is like where you live, but we have a good month or so left of winter. Maybe more. These are in wool and acrylic and they are soft and beautiful.

I have a couple more to make in silk/bamboo and then, my friends, I’m considering retiring this pattern. That’s not definite but if you have been interested in getting one, now just might be the time.

Happy Tuesday.

You are definitely not alone…I’m constantly juggling projects. And I too am distracted by my hubby…since he retired, I’d just as soon hang out with him, and I get very little done! Really like that unfinished quilt you discovered…I think it would make a great wall hanging! So, what are you discontinuing?…the silk and bamboo or the colors, or??

Probably the design itself – but I’m not sure. If there’s still a demand, I might keep it in the rotation.

I think all creative people do that…and it’s good for me to know that I am not alone. I always seem to have projects here and there, and then add in unfinished laundry, cleaning, half cultured yogurt…bread rising…

It drives my husband nuts…but I get to it eventually.

Love the colors in that quilt….they are such a unique color combo…but stunning. It’s going to be a beaut when you are done.

Thanks Jen. You know, I’m not even sure Don is fully aware of just what the heck I’m working on. He can often be in his own little bubble!

You are one busy woman Claudia. I’ve never quilted but did crochet for awhile. I love to write and have been known to pen a poem for different people on special occassions. But I just don’t seem to have as much creativity as a lot of people so I really enjoy reading about your creative endeavors. I really love the quilts!

Love, love the colours in your quilt. I always have at least 5 irons in the fire. I’ve heard that is because I’m a Gemini. Sure doesn’t let me get bored! I’ve got a dog to clip and bath myself. But crocheting is much more fun…

I bet you could find a good wall space to put the quilt. I’ve put full size quilts on the wall with rods.

I’ve hung them before, too, but we have limited wall space here, unfortunately. That’s the price you pay for having a lot of windows.

Those colors are great in the quilt. It would be beautiful on the wall or over a banister. I too have way too many things going on. Now have to get ready for tax appt on Friday. There’s water color painting that’s calling me, but have to put that on the back burner. Oh, the family too! Bless their hearts! Would love to hear from you and Brenda on how to hang quilts on walls with rods! I have a beauitful old one I’m tempted to do. I picked it up in Cotton Plant, Arkansas one year driving through. It is so heavy, and I treasure it so much.

You use a rod or you can buy a quilt hanger that’s specially made for hanging quilts. We have one hanging in the spare bedroom that is tacked up with tiny nails. Probably not the approved method of hanging, but it’s working for us.

        I’m okay with it!
I used to wonder what the big deal was about this time of life…why women didn’t talk about it.
        Now that I’m hear…I understand.
There just aren’t words…and I’m fairly certain, that hormones are what has made me have limited command of the English language and WHAT WORDS I DO HAVE! LOL…

I’m always juggling different projects and maybe that’s why I don’t get a lot done! Maybe if I just concentrated on one thing at a time…ha! I know what you mean with Don being around and feeling that your rhythm gets out of whack. I feel the same way when Brian is home from work. I hardly get anything done on those days. My routine gets disrupted.

I have lists and then make sublists and I still don’t get everything done! I’m so glad I got my scarf as I love it so much. Can’t wait to see you next creations though! Take a Spring break and get that quilting done and the books read…oh gosh the list always gets longer doesn’t it! Hugs, Linda

I love the quilt. I have one of similar size that needs to be finished and perhaps I’ll donate it?

I also juggle many projects, some I have for times when I’m alone and can concentrate, others for TV watching, and some portable ones for car riding and waiting room waiting. I have to get real with myself from time to time and not allow myself to begin another project until a certain lingering project has been completed. Sometimes I give myself boundaries about working within my stash. It is all great fun!

Me too, Tina. I have things I do in the evening in front of the television, because that seems the perfect time for working on them.

Love the quilt! Hang that baby on the wall; if you don’t like the look, take it back down. Maybe at the top of the stairs. Or over the stair rails? Over the foot of the bed or draped on the back of the sofa. Show it off, it’s beautiful!

I am definitely very scattered when it comes to projects, going from one to another and back again. Right now I actually have only ONE knitting project on needles, which is not usual for me; but I have several books going at once, not to mention several letters I need to write back to friends. Your San Diego quilt project is beautiful. Perhaps it could be a throw on the back of your couch, for snuggling in on cool spring or summer nights?

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
