Left To My Own Devices

January 28, 2016 at 7:52 am by Claudia

Okay. Yesterday, I slept in. Today I woke up at 4:30 am and could not get back to sleep.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Welcome to my world, my friends. Welcome.

I didn’t make it to the museum yesterday because I went off on a wild goose chase for something I wanted at Target. They didn’t have it. Which led to calling other Targets, which led to looking online (via my iPhone) for the link which came up as ‘No longer available.’ Which put me in a tizzy as I questioned the Target employee on the phone as to why it had seemingly been dropped from the stocklist. (Nicely, of course.) Which led to me leaving Target with a bag full of paper towels and a scented candle and then stopping at Barnes & Noble and buying an issue of Where Women Create (which I never do) and upon reading it, immediately regretting shelling out the money for it. Lovely photos, for the most part, but for me, there was nothing of any real substance in the end. Or at least, not enough substance to warrant the over $15.00 price tag. Those magazines are pricey.

I came back to the apartment and tried one more time to find the mysteriously missing item I wanted at Target. Much to my surprise, it popped up as available. What the heck??  So I ordered it online for pickup at yet another Hartford area Target, which I will drive to today. (You’ll find out more tomorrow.)

“Ummm….Claudia?” you’re saying, “Aren’t you supposed to be working on Romeo and Juliet?”

Yes. But they didn’t need me yesterday and they don’t need me today. But they will need me Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which will be a relief. Being left to my own devices…well, the pitfalls of that situation are obvious.

I saw a loveseat at Target that would fit in the shared office space back at the cottage (where space is indeed at a premium) beautifully.

1-28 loveweat target

I sat in it and it’s fairly firm. Better than squishy, I think.

1-28 loveweat target2

The price isn’t bad. Target…I write about you a lot. Wouldn’t this make a great gift for a blogger? I’d write about it and take pictures of it and show it off in my new shared office space. My husband could sit on it and play his guitar. I could sit on it and read. We would really like it. We’d add some colorful throw pillows and it would look fabulous!

In fact, Target, I’ll be talking about you again tomorrow when I blog about that mystery item that I’m picking up today. See what I mean? How about it?

I don’t think this shameless pleading will work.

New post on Just Let Me Finish This Page: What Are You Reading?

Happy Thursday.

I LOVE all the Somerset publications but like you, that price tag! Ouch! I have started thumbing through them to see if they are something I cannot live without. My faves are the Where Women Cook and the repurposing one for crafting–the name escapes me at the moment. Greencraft maybe? Love the loveseat and I agree that it would look adorable in the office. ☺

They are beautiful publications and I understand why the price is higher…it’s just too high for me! I do the same thing you do, Lynn Marie, I thumb through ANY magazine before I buy it and I find I don’t buy many!

Claudia I had the same thing happen with JCPenney. Tried to order new slipcovers online for my furniture, put them in the shopping and when I went to check out it said no longer available for my zip code. What the heck, it’s an online order I wasn’t looking to pick up in a store. I did call all the local stores and not one in my area had what I wanted, so I waited 3 days got back on line and was able to order. I now have them and am waiting to get them on the chairs. Things are just strange sometimes…. Can’t wait to see what your purchase is :)

I’m not sure how much more room I have for miniatures (especially since I have kits stashed under the bed that have yet to be assembled), but this one looks good. I’m very tempted.

Ha! What a day you had Claudia…and a long one today with your early wake-up. Curious to see what the mystery item is. And, I really like that love seat. We need one for our (very, very small) living room. I’m tired of just having chairs but am gun-shy as the last couple of love seats/sofas we have bought have been AWFUL — one from Pier One and I forget where the other one came from. It is difficult to find one that is just right – not too soft, yet not like a board. I’ll have to check out my Target.

I have several magazine subscriptions that I bought through our grandchildrens school for a fundraiser. I basically bought them out of the sense of guilt and that as a grandma I should. I would have rather written the school a check. They are a total waste of money. When I flew last month, I went through three of the magazines and ripped out the pages that were just advertisements to cut down on the weight. Believe it or not, I tore out over half of each magazine. All advertising. And that didn’t count the ones that had part of an article on one side and an ad on the other side. I left those in. I won’t be renewing any of them. The loveseat looks fantastic. Hey Target! Claudia would give you some good advertisement in exchange for it.
    Blessings, Betsy

I believe you when you say you tore out over half the magazine! Where Women Create doesn’t have much advertising and it’s saved for the back of the issue, but nonetheless, it’s way overpriced. I used to buy it a lot more often but I haven’t in a long time. I should have stuck with that decision.

Target, are you listening to Betsy?

Cute loveseat…looks very comfortable! I haven’t bought a magazine in ages…I miss that. But, it’s hard to justify the price of magazines, when you can find almost everything on the interwebs for free! Curious to know what you were searching for. We were looking for a certain cereal for one of our sons…we have the free time….and we always love a good hunt. On Target’s website, and Whole Foods, both said they had it. So we set out…2 1/2 hrs. later…no go….neither one! When we asked, we were told the Internet was wrong! Ha! But, at least it was a nice day for a drive around the city! ;)

    Hi Claudia
Have you read anything by Liz Trenow. I just finished the Orchid House and am now getting her other books from the Library. I enjoyed her.

I would return the magazine with a lovely smile and say ” I cannot waste my hard earned money on this”. That’s just me though.

If you need testimonials as to supporting your idea to Target re: that lovely love-seat…..well, you have a large group right here who would be happy to testify on your behalf!
We love shopping on-line, and we do it frequently, but I often wonder about the accuracy of the websites as they show the Not Available so often when you arrive at the final step. Also, on Amazon so many times I think about ordering something and it shows “only 2 remaining”, so I order it without taking time to ponder (esp at Christmas time). Then I think about those huge (Amazon-like) Amazon warehouses and I imagine that they are just sitting there laughing about it as we continue to “one click” to order.
Have another fun and interesting day off. Can’t wait to see your surprise purchase!!

I cancelled ALL of my mag subscriptions and now go to the library to read or check out those of interest. I agree with Lynn Marie…I too love all the Somerset publications but in the end, they are very $$$ and very infeasible for me. After all, I don’t have a barn or extra garage to convert into a beautiful craft space filled with wonderful supplies stored in antique armoires and vintage fluted pie tins! I had to laugh about your Target adventure….it reminds me of what my daughter says about me, that it is much safer to stay home rather than go out with a credit card. Oh, the trouble I can get into… I like that Target loveseat. I saw an upholstered chair at Cost Plus World Market this past weekend, but ended up buying a lamp instead! I’ll send you a picture…

I saw that loveseat at Target and also saw that it was on sale. It’s really cute, but I wonder how it would hold up? Don’t get me wrong – I love Target – but their furniture is not high quality. However, you never know if someone from Target will see your post…and gift you with this loveseat. Free would be good. :-)

Wow, I guess it’s been a LONG time since I bought a magazine. $15 for a single copy? Yikes. And then you didn’t even like it? That IS the worst, isn’t it? I’d feel the same way – cheated. Something similar’s happened to me ordering fragrances online. Why these companies don’t have samples they could send – I’ll never know. But I’ve bought several scents with descriptions that sounded heavenly, only to be bitterly-disappointed when the goods show up. Yuck. Oh well, lesson [painfully] learned. Needless to say I don’t do that anymore. If I can’t get a sample first, it’s no longer under consideration. Good luck with Target. Makes a lot of sense. You get a love seat – they get some great PR. And it’s not like you aren’t sincere in your good opinion of Target. You do often mention them – you like them. Anyway, hope it all works out. ?

Well, to be fair to Where Women Create, the paper is heavy and of great quality, very little in the way of ads. It’s a bit more than the usual magazine out there. It’s still over $15, though, and I just can’t do that anymore.

I loathe those, “why aren’t I sleeping?” moments almost as much as those, “i must fill this time with distraction as I dread the next thing that is coming.”

I’m doing that now. I have gum surgery tomorrow morning.

Moving on, I’m intrigued by your mystery target item. I also agree a firm couch vs. a squashy couch is my preference, except perhaps for my mother in law’s couch which is like eating an entire burrito when you sit on it — you’re suddenly comatose, ha!

I have a small loveseat like that! I paid $50 for it in 1976 and it was the first piece of furniture I ever bought for myself. It was secondhand from a co-worker for my first apartment as a full-time working (young!) woman. It has come in handy a zillion times in too many houses…but I love it. I’ve had it reupholstered twice. My husband is tall so it’s a little bit not right for him because it has a lower back than what’s in your photo but it’s perfect for me because I’m LOTS shorter. I’ve had it in tiny spaces that I was told would never fit, but it did; once, almost like a window seat, which really tickled me because I’d always wanted a window seat. Right now, it’s in our ultra-tiny home office and I like to sit on it with the dog while my husband is at the computer (togetherness!!). No matter where I’ve lived, I’ve always had a place for this loveseat. When I’ve had it reupholstered, I’m always told that it’s very well made with a good, strong frame (whereas a lot of the stuff today is crap, from what my current reupholsterer tells me [I’m currently trying to save money to reupholster our larger sofa which was Mom’s…it’s 8-ft long, from the 1940s; beautiful turned legs; Country French; I think I want velveteen, a solid color…when Mother inherited it from HER mom’s best friend, she had it reupholstered in BROWN which is my least favorite color, and that was 1982; but, oh gosh, reupholstering is awfully expensive and my husband would rather just buy a brand-new sofa but I said ‘no way’ because this is a vintage piece that’s just too cool and I’ll love it more once it’s not brown]).

My husband came home from the hospital this afternoon. It’s been a long and unexpected three days for us and we’re exhausted…but he’s the one going through the worst of everything and if I could take some of his pain away and put it on myself, I’d do it in a heartbeat, because it just kills me to see him hurt (what is that expression[?], when you love someone and partner with someone, it’s ‘twice the joy and half the pain’). The surgeon is wonderful and said he’ll even check in with us over the weekend…no more racing back to the hospital at 11pm, if we can help it.

Thanks for your hug (I got it; hugs back!). I think today’s post is sort of hysterical (as in humorous); you had some loose ends and now of course we’re intrigued on what the heck you were trying to get at Target! I wanted to stop in there SO BADLY over the past days back and forth to the hospital because I don’t have one in my town but, you know, there were more pressing matters although I think it would have been a great way to de-stress. I had to be content with the hospital gift shop and I so wish I had somebody to give a baby gift to because they had the MOST GORGEOUS knitted/crocheted baby blankets made by the hospital auxiliary (ladies). The gift shop volunteer told me that the blankets are made by ladies who are ‘seniors’ because the younger women don’t know how to do those kinds of crafts. I wish my fingers weren’t so stiff that I could learn how to knit and/or crochet…try harder at it than I did in my youth when Mom tried to teach me (I didn’t have the patience). I fear these amazing home arts of sewing, crocheting, knitting, tatting et al are falling to the wayside.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
