Light and Shadows

January 16, 2017 at 9:32 am by Claudia

I love the way the late afternoon sun creates light and shadows on the city streets. I took this on my way home from the theater yesterday afternoon. Lots of little kids everywhere this weekend as Disney on Ice is at the XL Center, which is that building on the left with the marquee. Adorable.

The show is going very well. We still have a few more days of rehearsal in the afternoon. Tomorrow will be a work-through of the show, with a performance that night. There’s lots of tweaking and editing and fine-tuning of cues and sound and lights and, of course, the action on stage.

Did you watch Sherlock  last night? Now, you know I don’t misuse this word – I’ve written about it before on this blog – I literally was on the edge of my seat throughout the 90 minute episode. Tense, edgy, brilliantly written and filmed – it was superb. Oh, Sherlock. It’s hard to find anything out there that is as stupendous as you. If, as has been hinted, this is your final season, I will go into mourning. But you did leave it open-ended a bit, didn’t you? So, we’ll see.

I came home yesterday, did the laundry – always a challenge in this building, where there are machines on each floor (except for mine) and sometimes the dryers work and sometimes they don’t. This means I have to load all the wet clothes into my basket and search out some working dryer that happens to free on a Sunday. But it’s done. I also did some cleaning in the bathroom, made the bed up with clean sheets, and I’m good to go until Saturday morning when I drive home.

Take a moment today to honor and salute heroes like Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis. On this day, we must remember that we still have work to do, not the least of which is to ensure the rights of all, every day, everywhere. We have an incoming administration that will do everything they can to trample on and/or annihilate those rights. We must not let the sacrifice and work of Dr. King and of John Lewis and of countless others who have served a noble cause to be in vain.

Happy Monday.

I too loved the last episode of Sherlock! I understand it may not have been to everyone’s liking, but I thought it was wonderful. (And it made me realize how much I enjoy Andrew Scott.) I actually watched Victoria, and I really enjoyed that also. I am not sure if it is the writing so much as Rufus Sewell and Jenna Coleman. I was surprised, in fact, by how much I liked it.

Good for Don attending these marches! I will be there in spirit next Saturday. I am hoping the turnout far exceeds the wonderful numbers they are expecting…

I thought it was incredible! And I love Andrew Scott as well. He is such a good actor.

Oh, I fear that episode of Sherlock was the last. I can’t imagine a better finale to one of the best series I have ever watched. I too was on the edge of my seat. In fact I had to rewatch this morning as I was so stressed at times I actually couldn’t watch! What a baby. It’s always nice to see your photos of Hartford. You always manage to capture the best of CT’s capital city.

Hartford is a lovely city. Wish the weather was more conducive to picture-taking, Deb!

Did watch Sherlock and was a nervous wreck!……too many superlatives to name……..the quality sadly reminds you of what TV shows can and should deliver……………..day to reflect on the work ahead to protect the strides made in civil rights and the price so many paid to accomplish them……….as well as protecting the basic rights guaranteed in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and additional legislation……Dianne

Why did it take me so long to discover Sherlock? At least I have 4 seasons to look forward to on the nights there is nothing good on TV. I see why you all love it. (I watched one episode). I did enjoy ‘Victoria’ but can see it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Cloudy here today but warm. Working more on the piles of things to sell, to donate and to save for the church rummage sale. Lots of work but so satisfying and I see the house becoming less cluttered.

I would like to recommend these movies in honor of MLK Jr and Black History month which is next month. “Glory Road”, “Men of Honor”, “The Gifted Hands”, (Cuba Gooding Jr in these two) and “Woodlawn”.

These are based on true events and struggles that they faced.

Certainly a good day to reflect. And it is so dearly needed.

We can also reflect, in our area, from the shimmer of the ice which coats most of the landscape. The larger school districts already had the day off for MLK Day, but rural schools in our area do not have the day off. The ice handled that! It is 29* this morning, so if the temps go up, it will become rain…. but will freeze again overnight. Ah, Winter!

Have a wonderful day off. Sounds like you got a lot done yesterday.

Oh, no! I do not like ice! Fortunately, the weather looks okay this week. I checked out Saturday and it will be clear and dry for the packing of the car and the trip home. Be careful!

Sherlock…wow! I like they included the Garidebs, I cannot fully remember the story but it was nice to hear the name. I will watch again when I receive my copy form Amazon soon. If it was the last, Mary’s “miss you” cd was a fitting end. Yes, we must be vigilant in protecting everyone’s right. Some day someone might take ours, people fail to remember this. Look up the word’ demagogue’ and you know who you will find.

It certainly seemed like it could be a final episode, didn’t it? I hope not, but I fear it might be.

Demagogue: with a picture of that man right next to the definition.

I was pacing up and down during Sherlock! I echo everyone’s superlative! I remarked to my daughter, who was able to sit still mesmerized by the show, that the scenes inside the prison for the totally criminally insane was like Cumberbatch returning to some Star Trek set.

I’m of the same mindset as Elle regarding Victoria. I loved every scene Jenna Coleman was in, especially her exchanges with Rufus Sewell, who looked a bit young for his part, as Lord M was 40 years older than Victoria. However, many of the other sub-plots did not hold my interest as much. I think it’s because I know Victoria’s reign was a successful one and there is little intrigue or surprise.

Enjoy your week of few household chores! And enjoy and savor and celebrate this day of remembering a truly brave man….

Oh, Sherlock. I had a love/hate relationship with this installment, based solely on the fact that I could hardly enjoy the brilliance of the episode for worrying that it was the last episode. Of course, if it is the last, they went out on a high–even for this franchise, which continually outpaces expectations. But I felt so sad to think that I was watching one last, perfect episode. Sigh…

I watched Victoria ( as a sort of palate cleanser) but didn’t really find it to my liking.

Going to an MLK, Jr. rally to honor life and legacy, and to reach for hope.
    Peace, all.

Now I will have to check out Sherlock after all the wonderful comments!

To add to my comments on yesterday’s post, one additional thing that I will be doing on Friday is saying prayers for the Clinton’s. I so admire Hillary’s strength of character to have to attend “the peaceful transfer of power” to such a despicable person that doesn’t deserve the office.

Start with season one, and work your way through, Kim.

I must say that I wish the Clintons weren’t attending. Hillary was robbed and we all know it. But they are behaving with great dignity and I respect that.

The dryers aren’t working because the lint filters haven’t been emptied. Sometimes they can be emptied by the people using them, sometimes they need to be emptied by the staff. And you have lost your money. I would inquire at the front desk.

No, that’s not it. I empty the filter before I use any dryer here, the same as I do at home. The dryers don’t work at times simply because they get A LOT of use, this is a very large apartment building with many tenants. I’ve stayed here enough times to know the routine!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
