We ending up getting more snow than was predicted – at least 12 inches, perhaps a bit more. We spent a few hours shoveling and snow blowing and we still have to shovel a bit more today. I’ve taken lots of photos. The skies were gray so I’ve had to edit the photos a bit. Today, on the other hand, is sunny.
The problem with all of this is that we’re going to get lots of rain tomorrow – at least two inches – and with a foot of snow on the ground, flooding is going to be an issue. A huge snowstorm and then two days later, tons of rain. It’s frigging exhausting.
Anyway, some photos for you:
Thankfully, the snow was light and powdery so it was much easier to shovel than late winter’s heavy, wet snow. Very grateful for that!
Stay safe.
Happy Monday.
Shanna says
But it is soooo beautiful as it sits there. I’d like a slice of that big coconut cake atop the birdbath/cakestand!
Vicki says
OMgosh, I went back and looked; you’re right, Shanna; a coconut cake; perfect descript!
Claudia says
It is!
Thanks, Shanna.
Elaine in Toronto says
Beautiful snow pictures, Claudia. Stay warm and cozy, you and Don. We got snow yesterday, too, but only a little.
Hugs, Elaine
Claudia says
Thanks, Elaine.
Stay safe.
Donnamae says
Oh, that’s a lot of snow…but it’s so beautiful. However, ask me on Wednesday how I feel about the beautiful snow . We are in a predicted snow and of 10+ inches ourselves Monday night to all day Tuesday.
Happy Shoveling! But…go slow. We don’t want any injuries! ;)
Claudia says
We already shoveled for the most part and we’re fine!
Stay safe, Donnamae.
Linda MacKean says
The snow is so pretty and your photos are fabulous. I miss the quietness that snow can bring.
Claudia says
I do love that quiet.
Stay safe, Linda.
kathy in iowa says
that’s a lot of snow, but it is beautiful! so glad that it’s the fluffy, dry kind of snow and (assuming, because you didn’t mention it) that you didn’t have pain from shoveling or lose power and are safe.
thanks for the update and pretty photos.
good luck with the rain ahead.
we are to get snow today/tonight. one to three inches was initially predicted, now said to be six. i will stay with family members tonight so we’ll go for an early ride, then some will follow me to my apartment so my car can be in the garage. did a lot of shopping last night so we are stocked up. my brother is one of the people vicki mentioned a post or two ago (thanks, vicki) … he has to work … this time it’s close to my apartment and if the weather is bad, he can stay there or where i’ll be tonight (not quite halfway between work and his home, which is about twenty-five interstate/small highway miles west of here).
stay safe, everyone!
kathy
Vicki says
kathy, a good plan for your brother, who has no choice but to work and be out there in the storms, that he’s got a back-up plan to be with you if roads are too-too bad; storms like you all are having definitely are worthy of careful planning, like your grocery stockup; your snow, Claudia’s snow; looks so intimidating to beach-person (West coast person) ‘me’ who knows nothing of snow … as Claudia always so nicely puts it, STAY SAFE …
kathy in iowa says
thanks, vicki. :)
have you ever been in snow?
kathy
Claudia says
Take care, Kathy. Stay safe!
Kay Amhaus says
So THAT’S what a foot of snow looks like! Been a year and more since we had that much on the ground so my memory’s a bit hazy. Good it was the light fluffy kind. Your pictures are lovely and it does indeed look like a winter wonderland. But that much rain following right on its heels is just insane.
Our 2″ has not gone away like I wanted. In fact, this storm racing across the country is supposed to dump more here but no meteorologist can predict how much yet. And if we get lake effect snow too (we’re about 2 mi. from Lake Michigan) then it could be bad.
Guess we’re at the “grin and bear it” phase of January.
Take care,
Kay
Claudia says
I don’t know about that storm. I’ll have to check into it. Our rain is arriving tomorrow, so all the prettiness will be no more.
Stay safe, Kay.
Barrie says
Love the pictures, especially the one with your red shed…it really pops next to all the white. We just have a lot of frost. Stay warm and safe.
Claudia says
Thanks, Barrie.
Stay safe.
Cathy S says
Thanks for sharing these great pictures. I, too, love your red shed popping through that beautiful white fluffy stuff. Enjoy the beauty but also be careful out there.
Claudia says
The red shed is a gem when it snows.
Stay safe, Cathy.
Vicki says
Light and powdery, but it looks so THICK! A lot of work for you and Don, but the January snow is so beautiful.
No complaints from me that here in coastal Southern Calif we were 36 degrees at 6am. (I could hear the ‘wind machines’ going in the lemon orchards, stirring up the frosty-cold air so that it doesn’t harm the fruit on the trees. [Freeze and citrus, a bad mix.] It’s a loud ‘engine’ drone-sound [low-pitched, steady ‘humming’ that is magnified in the dead stillness of night {4am}].) I’m sure 36 degrees sounds warm to you!
Thanks for today’s photos; stay warm!
Vicki says
Claudia, do you occasionally read Susan Branch’s blog? I feel like I recall that you once checked in with her from time to time(?). Her posts have been fewer and I rarely leave comments because she only answers a few (not mine!); of course she gets tons of reader comments (sometimes in the thousands); very time-consuming for a blog owner as I’m sure you’d agree.
I feel she’s leaving a hint here and there that she’s winding things down, maybe permanently retiring unless she plans to do another book. She’d said something, sometime back, about a quest for simplifying ‘life’; then, in this latest posting, she says something about it having been nice to have known her ‘fans’ (calls us ‘girlfriends’).
She’s coming (imminently) to Central Coast Calif to sell off her ranch property (somewhat rural) where she has heretofore (physically) inventoried the items for her online store. (I would venture to say that this sale could net her a tidy pocket of cash for continuing, older retirement as Calif real estate is still pricey, and that [lovely] place of hers is [I think she’d said] eight acres; so, nothing less than a million bucks I’m sure [like it’s any fan’s business!! {Just wishing the best for her!}].)
She’s closer now to age 80 than 70, so maybe it’s just time, unless I’ve misinterpreted.
Just wondered if you had any thoughts or was picking up the same vibe from her. I feel like it’s possibly the long farewell. Made me kinda sad. Will miss her! I’ve collected a lot of Susan Branch stuff over the years (Queen of Cozy as some refer to her). I’ll miss her whimsical artwork. I’ve appreciated that she tries to exude comfort with cozy (she sells ‘soothe’ in the best way!).
Vicki says
I’m too wordy today; but, Claudia, I wanted to tell you that I’ve become so intrigued with the Tonner dolls since you displayed yours in the revamped studio space upstairs in your cottage. My goodness, I knew nothing of these dolls and they’re absolutely fab; the faces are amazing; the clothes are amazing. And to think they’re not (Tonner himself) in business anymore; how wonderful that you have one of these authentic-original dolls! In your copious spare time (ugh … all that snow shoveling!!), please do a post with her close-ups as I’d love to see the details of your Tonner doll. I feel like I’ve been living in a cave to have not known of these dolls which date from the early 1990s.
Claudia says
He is designing, but specifically through the Virtual Doll Convention – run by Rachel Hoffman who owns a dollhouse shop in Denver, Colorado. They partnered in 2019, and Robert designs a small amount of dolls that are up for sale during the convention. There is a sale on January 20th of new dolls. That’s where I got mine. I LOVE his work, but I really love the older dolls with amazing and magical hair and clothing.
I got to meet him at Wonderland of Play in November and he lives in a town north of us – about a half hour away.
Vicki says
Oh, you have a good connection with/about him!

I rarely read her now, but used to communicate with her on Twitter (which I don’t do anymore.) She’s a lovely person. I believe she’s older than me and, like with me, there comes a time to cut back on all the things we used to do. I’ll go read her latest post, Vicki, and get back to you.
She’ll earn a mint from selling that property and she owns a place on Martha’s Vineyard which has to be worth millions.
I’ve contemplated the end of the blog, which will probably be in a couple of years. I would miss her a great deal.
xo
Vicki says
Thanks for your thoughts on the matter. I just looked it up; she’s age 76. She had mentioned some health issues stemming from the time of the pandemic but was taking some prescription meds which greatly improved her mental health/outlook. From photos she sends, she seems quite fit for her age; like you and Don, she and her Joe do some daily walks. She just wants us all to be happy. A seeker of things good.
Claudia says
As someone who writes a blog, just writing every day at this point in my life is tiring. I’ve talked about most everything and I’m almost talked out. Add to that all the creative work she does on a daily basis, well – that’s a hell of a lot to do at the age of 76!
Claudia says
36 degrees at night? Yes, warm!
I lived in Southern California, so I understand.
Stay safe, Vicki.
Vicki says
Yep, I’m cold. House just doesn’t warm up enough for me. My husband is out there right now at 7:45am PST (Weds), walking the dog in 39 degrees (they usually walk an hour before breakfast). Icy/frost all over everything. Has killed all my lantana this week. But, yep again, NOTHING like what you experience.

Dee+Dee says
Beautiful photos of the snow. It’s very cold here and snow is expected later in the week. I am convinced we get your weather a few days later and in a much milder form.
My town is on a slightly more northern latitude than Labrador in Canada but because of the Gulf Stream we don’t experience such extreme conditions in the UK.
It was my birthday this weekend and I had a lovely time but I am currently phoneless as the screen has somehow crashed so I can’t view anything. I didn’t think that I rely on it as much as I must do. I feel a bit lost, I couldn’t even set it as an alarm clock!
Happy Monday
Claudia says
You very well might get our weather. That makes sense!
Happy Birthday, Dee Dee! Sorry, though, about your phone. It’s amazing how quickly we become addicted to them!
Stay safe.
kathy in iowa says
happy belated birthday, dee dee. hope you had a great day, were well-celebrated.
and that your phone problem is resolved by now!

Thank you for the snow photos, Claudia. Sitting where I am looking out at clear blue skies, I’m always amazed at how different all the parts of the world are, and how it’s simultaneously a big world and a small world.
Claudia says
Today, it’s sunny with big fluffy clouds.
Stay safe, Wendy.
jeanie says
Flooding and possibly ice if that rain freezes quickly. Be careful out there. I’m glad it’s light and fluffy. Watch your back!
Claudia says
Thanks, Jeanie.
Stay safe.

I’m eternally 4 years old inside when it snows! We can get up to a foot at a time, which of course looks gorgeous without too much inconvenience, and it never lasts more than a couple of days. I love looking at all the different animal tracks and there’s nothing more beautiful then sun glittering on newly fallen snow.
Claudia says
Agree!
Stay safe, Denise!
Ellen D. says
It’s a lot of shoveling but it really is beautiful and your home looks so lovely.
Stay warm and safe!
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Ellen.

Went to Costco and bought a huge flying saucers sled. I hid it on the back porch. I will keep it for just one good ride down the golf course hills when conditions are right. I will pad myself up and bundle up….I want my husband to film it. Then I will send it to my grandchildren who live in Pa. ………okay……just kidding.
I did go to Costco….bought blueberries and cheese. Saw the sleds and had a moment.
We got very little snow but it was very pretty. ,,,my friends in Ulster county got 11 inches. Two weeks too late for the holidays and her visitors from Carolina. Stay warm and safe everyone.
Claudia says
I wish you did buy that sled! Oh, those were the days…
Stay safe, Maria.
