Mabel was looking dusty. Her glossy black finish seemed a little less than spiffy.
She wasn’t happy. She complained. Rightfully so.
So I, not a seamstress by any means, grabbed some fabric. I encouraged Mabel to help, too. I measured and cut and then Mabel took over with her nifty straight stitch.
I found some vintage suede ribbon in a pretty shade of blue and made ties for each end.
I like it. Mabel likes it. But something needed tweaking and I let that idea simmer overnight.
There! Mabel’s initial in more of the suede ribbon.
Today’s egg cups:
On the right is the very first egg cup I ever received. It was given to me by my godparents when I was a little girl. It was made for Fanny Farmer candies – part of an Easter series. I held onto that egg cup for years and years. It wasn’t until we moved out east that I found out there was a whole world of egg cups out there.
One of the first egg cups in my newly begun collection was the one on the left – also made for Fanny Farmer. And readers, here’s the best part: It was made by McCoy! McCoy and an egg cup – what a great combination!
And no, I don’t like soft boiled eggs, though my mother surely served them to me in my first egg cup. I remember that distinctly. Especially when I was sick.
More tomorrow.
Happy Sunday.

i am fascinated with all of the different egg cups that you’ve been sharing… what a fun thing to collect! i think it’s so sweet that your godparents gave you your first one when you were a little girl… what a collection it has turned into :)
Claudia says
That egg cup is the one that is the most precious to me. Both my godparents are gone now and I think of them every time I see it.
SUSIE says
Claudia, Mabel looks good dressed.:):) I love your egg cup collection. Hope you are looking forward to nice spring days. It is snowing here but will be about 50 degrees by Friday. So things are looking promising.xoxo,Susie
Claudia says
We’re due for a little snow – they’re saying ‘snow showers’ on Tuesday. I’m hoping that it doesn’t amount to much. This seems like the winter that will never end!
Vanessa Bower says
Hi Claudia,
Love your darling egg cups. They scream spring and Easter.
I remember my mother fixing me soft boiled eggs when I was sick. She also warmed Vernor’s for me to drink when my tummy was upset. My husband’s mother, a nurse, did the same when he was sick. I still do this when my daughter and husband are not feeling well. I really don’t know if there’s any magic healing powers to these foods but they sure made me feel better.
It’s cold and snowy (5 inches so far) here in Kansas City. Sounds like soft boiled eggs would warm the tummy after shoveling the driveway and sidewalk.
Thanks again for sharing your sweet treasures,
Vanessa
Claudia says
I grew up in the Detroit area and Vernors was and is still my favorite! I can’t find it here, so when I’m away from home and I see it, you can bet I buy some!
Judy Clark says
So glad Mabel got a new frock! Is that her Easter dress.
Have a great day friend!
Judy
Claudia says
You too, Judy!
gardenbug says
I think Mabel will not risk getting dusty now. Her easter outfit is quite feminine!
Both my grandmother and my husband’s were named Mabel. Were you ever taught this rhyme?
“Mabel Mabel
Strong and able
Get your elbows off the table!
This is not a horse’s stable
This is our dining table!”
Yesterday I picked up some new fabric. Another addiction of mine I’m afraid.
Claudia says
I think I’ve heard the first part of that rhyme, but not the whole thing. Love it!
Patti says
Very fashionable and monogrammed too! Will this be her traveling outfit when you take her with you on your upcoming trip?~ Hugs, Patti
Claudia says
Yes, it will!
Tana says
Beautiful cover for Mabel and I had to tell you again how much I am enjoying seeing your egg cups.
Claudia says
Thank you, Tana!
Olive says
The eggs cups continue to charm.
Claudia says
thanks, Olive – they are lots of fun.
Susan says
Your egg cups are so adorable! The egg cups made today do not have the charm of the old ones, at least none of the new ones I have seen do. Sadly, I do not find many of the vintage ones at antique or thrift shops. Perhaps no oone wants to give them up.
Big Hugs,
Susan and Bentley
Claudia says
I think they are getting harder and harder to find, Susan – even on eBay.
Kate - The Garden Bell says
Great fun dress for Mabel. Perfect colors. Just how cute are those little egg cugs. What fun thing to collect.
Claudia says
I really love them, Kate.
Meredith says
Mom’s go to first meal you were able to eat when you were sick, soft boiled eggs and a piece of dry toast, the thought stll make me ill a bit. Mabel looks very happy, and warmer I might add I bet she was cold this winter.
Hugs to you Sister,
M

And Vernors.

How many egg cups have you got? They are all nice.
Claudia says
I think I have close to 40 of them, Regula.
Nana Diana says
I am so glad to see that Mabel no longer sits naked. Great job of covering her up. I love your little egg cups. McCoy!!! Can you believe it? However, I almost gag thinking of soft boiled eggs being served in those- xo Diana
Claudia says
I know!
Pat says
I can’t say that I’ve ever had a soft boiled egg. Ever…
How wonderful to have held onto this very first egg cup. I know you love the McCoy pottery so much…so this second cups is a double blessing, and surely special.
Pat
Claudia says
My mom always gave us one when we were sick, Pat.
Laura says
What was it about mothers and soft boiled eggs when we were sick UGH!!! I love Mabel’s new dress. She looks so happy.

Thank you, Balisha.
Nancy Blue Moon says
I guess I am one of the few who did like the soft boiled eggs Claudia..I don’t know if they made me feel better but they did make my tummy feel all warm and cozy inside..I bet they would have tasted even better in one of your precious egg cups..I never had one when I was a kid..we were pretty poor back then..I am just loving seeing your collection and that McCoy/Fanny Farmer one is so perfect for you Claudia! Mabel’s dress is lovely..I think my machine needs one to keep her warm too!
Claudia says
Well, I wasn’t crazy about soft boiled eggs as a child, but funnily enough, Don made me one the other day and I rather enjoyed it!
Annette Tracy says
I think you might have started a new fashion trend with Mable! She is beautiful and one that turns out such beautiful things deserves a beautiful new dress! I never had soft boiled eggs either as a child, but so enjoyed them while I was flying to Europe as a flight attendant years ago. And the German breads to dip into that wonderful egg yolk, oh my, plus a good strong cup of coffee made for a wonderful breakfast! I have a couple but mine are boring.
Claudia says
I never knew you were a flight attendant, Annette!
Jen @ Muddy Boot Dreams says
Mabel will be spick and span with her fancy new cover…
Looks great.
Jen
Claudia says
Thanks, Jen!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Miss Mable is looking quite lovely in her new garment! Love the initial. Now those egg cups are so cute but one made by McCoy…oh be still my heart! I hope you are having a wonderful Sunday.
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
The McCoy cup is a favorite, for sure!
nancy says
My mother used to make soft boiled eggs for me when I was a little girl. I actually liked them then. Not now! I don’t think we ever had an egg cup. I do have one that came with a child’s set of dishes that I purchased for my youngest daughter, in England, when she was three. She is now the mother of five. The first four are boys, and she didn’t think the Royal Doulton dishes would survive, so I still have them. The baby is a girl, but too young for china.
I love your egg cups and bought one for myself on eBay, today. It is a little yellow duck, by Goebel, that was made in seventy-four. I really don’t need any more collections though, so hope I can be happy with just one!

Claudia says
Good for you, Nancy!
Debra says
I never KNEW there were egg cups till you started showing them this week. I must have been a dish deprived person for most of my life! Then again the only breakfast eggs I eat are scrambled so maybe that’s why ? Mabel just wanted an Easter bonnet ! Now she’s wearing one!
Claudia says
I might have to add a flower, Debra!
Donnamae says
Nice covering for Mabel…I’m sure she appreciates it! What is it with soft boiled eggs as a cure for whatever? I don’t get it…my mom never made one for me…do you know if that’s a regional thing? ;)
Claudia says
I don’t know, Donna – I’m from the Midwest originally.
Sally says
Mabel looks lovely all gussied up and in her new monogrammed pinafore! So much fun.
I have my mom’s Featherweight, the sewing machine I learned to sew on when I was small but it looks pretty sad. I wonder if there’s a Featherweight Foof-It-Up salon, so she’ll be all pretty again like your Mabel?!
Happy Sunday!
Claudia says
I do know there are people out there who restore Featherweights, Sally.
Lynda at Still Woods Farmhouse says
I love that you gave your sewing machine a name! Mabel looks to be well loved and I bet she loves her new cover. That was nice that Mabel help out. My mother gave me her 1962 Singer and I love it. It has a great weight to it as opposed to the plastic models that are made now. Whenever I take it in for a cleaning, the repairmen always comment on the sturdiness of the machine. Now I feel like I need to give “her” a name!! Have a great week!
Many blessings from Still Woods Farmhouse
Claudia says
They used to make sewing machines with much more heft and weight, didn’t they? Like phones – I miss the old rotary dial phones that were solid and heavy.
Linda says
Hi Claudia, Just delurking to let you know how much I enjoy your blog. We share so many of the same interests, so reading your blog is like visiting a friend each day for tea and a chat. I love books, (real books), quilts, second hand treasures, crocheting, knitting and I have just recently started to collect egg cups. You got me interested in them the first time I read about your collection on your blog. I love how much you care for Scout and all animals for that matter. I think your cottage is lovely, it looks so comfortable and welcoming. I look foreward to your posts each day. Take care and keep blogging on your own terms!!
Claudia says
Oh, thank you very much for your kind words, Linda!
Linda @ Itsy Bits And Pieces says
The letter M makes Mabel’s new frock perfect! Such a cute idea! I have really enjoyed seeing your egg cups, Claudia!
Claudia says
Thank you, Linda. There’s still more to come!
Nadia@Loveliveandgarden says
Those egg cups are adorable :-) I heard you have a love for egg cups from another blog. I bet you have such a great collection!
Claudia says
I do. I really love it – probably close to 40 egg cups.
Beverly says
Mabel is styling in her new outfit. She is quite trendy with the monogram.
Still loving your egg cups, Claudia. And, how great that McCoy produced one. Double the pleasure.
Haworth says
Oh! I love that little egg cup on the right, Claudia. They’re both adorable but the little baby chick one is so sweet. And Mabel’s “dress” is lovely. What a great idea! Black always attracts the dust and it can’t be good for all her moving parts. You really triggered memories with mention of Fanny Farmer Candies. Our family loved them and we always turned to them for a special gift on mother’s day or father’s day or at Christmas. In fact the first Christmas after my father died, we bought his favorite F.F. candy and put the box up on the mantel, to feel as if he was there. (And then after we opened our gifts, we promptly opened the candy and ate it all!? Something I’m sure my dad was laughing about.)
