Mabel Gets Dressed

March 24, 2013 at 8:30 am by Claudia

featherweight-670x446

Mabel was looking dusty. Her glossy black finish seemed a little less than spiffy.

She wasn’t happy. She complained. Rightfully so.

So I, not a seamstress by any means, grabbed some fabric. I encouraged Mabel to help, too. I measured and cut and then Mabel took over with her nifty straight stitch.

mabelcover1

I found some vintage suede ribbon in a pretty shade of blue and made ties for each end.

I like it. Mabel likes it. But something needed tweaking and I let that idea simmer overnight.

mabelcoverinitial

There! Mabel’s initial in more of the suede ribbon.

eggcups9

Today’s egg cups:

On the right is the very first egg cup I ever received. It was given to me by my godparents when I was a little girl. It was made for Fanny Farmer candies – part of an Easter series. I held onto that egg cup for years and years. It wasn’t until we moved out east that I found out there was a whole world of egg cups out there.

One of the first egg cups in my newly begun collection was the one on the left – also made for Fanny Farmer. And readers, here’s the best part: It was made by McCoy! McCoy and an egg cup – what a great combination!

And no, I don’t like soft boiled eggs, though my mother surely served them to me in my first egg cup. I remember that distinctly. Especially when I was sick.

More tomorrow.

Happy Sunday.

That egg cup is the one that is the most precious to me. Both my godparents are gone now and I think of them every time I see it.

We’re due for a little snow – they’re saying ‘snow showers’ on Tuesday. I’m hoping that it doesn’t amount to much. This seems like the winter that will never end!

    Hi Claudia,
Love your darling egg cups. They scream spring and Easter.
I remember my mother fixing me soft boiled eggs when I was sick. She also warmed Vernor’s for me to drink when my tummy was upset. My husband’s mother, a nurse, did the same when he was sick. I still do this when my daughter and husband are not feeling well. I really don’t know if there’s any magic healing powers to these foods but they sure made me feel better.
It’s cold and snowy (5 inches so far) here in Kansas City. Sounds like soft boiled eggs would warm the tummy after shoveling the driveway and sidewalk.
Thanks again for sharing your sweet treasures,
    Vanessa

I think Mabel will not risk getting dusty now. Her easter outfit is quite feminine!
Both my grandmother and my husband’s were named Mabel. Were you ever taught this rhyme?
    “Mabel Mabel
    Strong and able
Get your elbows off the table!
This is not a horse’s stable
    This is our dining table!”
Yesterday I picked up some new fabric. Another addiction of mine I’m afraid.

Your egg cups are so adorable! The egg cups made today do not have the charm of the old ones, at least none of the new ones I have seen do. Sadly, I do not find many of the vintage ones at antique or thrift shops. Perhaps no oone wants to give them up.

I think you might have started a new fashion trend with Mable! She is beautiful and one that turns out such beautiful things deserves a beautiful new dress! I never had soft boiled eggs either as a child, but so enjoyed them while I was flying to Europe as a flight attendant years ago. And the German breads to dip into that wonderful egg yolk, oh my, plus a good strong cup of coffee made for a wonderful breakfast! I have a couple but mine are boring.

My mother used to make soft boiled eggs for me when I was a little girl. I actually liked them then. Not now! I don’t think we ever had an egg cup. I do have one that came with a child’s set of dishes that I purchased for my youngest daughter, in England, when she was three. She is now the mother of five. The first four are boys, and she didn’t think the Royal Doulton dishes would survive, so I still have them. The baby is a girl, but too young for china.

I love your egg cups and bought one for myself on eBay, today. It is a little yellow duck, by Goebel, that was made in seventy-four. I really don’t need any more collections though, so hope I can be happy with just one!

I love that you gave your sewing machine a name! Mabel looks to be well loved and I bet she loves her new cover. That was nice that Mabel help out. My mother gave me her 1962 Singer and I love it. It has a great weight to it as opposed to the plastic models that are made now. Whenever I take it in for a cleaning, the repairmen always comment on the sturdiness of the machine. Now I feel like I need to give “her” a name!! Have a great week!

They used to make sewing machines with much more heft and weight, didn’t they? Like phones – I miss the old rotary dial phones that were solid and heavy.

Oh! I love that little egg cup on the right, Claudia. They’re both adorable but the little baby chick one is so sweet. And Mabel’s “dress” is lovely. What a great idea! Black always attracts the dust and it can’t be good for all her moving parts. You really triggered memories with mention of Fanny Farmer Candies. Our family loved them and we always turned to them for a special gift on mother’s day or father’s day or at Christmas. In fact the first Christmas after my father died, we bought his favorite F.F. candy and put the box up on the mantel, to feel as if he was there. (And then after we opened our gifts, we promptly opened the candy and ate it all!? Something I’m sure my dad was laughing about.)
