First of all, Rest in Peace, John McCain. There are tributes pouring in and they are more eloquent than anything I could write. I’ll just say that though I often disagreed with him, I never for one moment doubted his integrity, his bravery, his love of country over party. And he proved that again and again. He was a true statesman, the last Republican (seemingly) willing to stand up for what is right and to call out wrong. That he had to leave this world knowing what was happening to his Party and to the Presidency makes me very sad. That he fought for us, saved the ACA, spoke out against torture, hand-carried the Steele Dossier to the FBI, and spoke out against Putin and Trump makes me very proud indeed to have witnessed his legacy.
The phlox is blooming in the big garden bed. Such a glorious scent!
I received a package in the mail yesterday from Tina-Marie, a reader of this blog. She had written to me to say that she found an egg cup she wanted to send to me. And she did.
I am crazy about this egg cup!
Meet Maria (the name is written on the base).
She is by Sevi, an Italian maker of all sorts of things including wooden egg cups. She’s most likely from the 1950s. There’s a whole series of them that have ski caps.
Sans cap, ready for the egg of your choice. She is simply adorable.
I have one other wooden figural egg cup, the one that Don and Scout gave me several years ago, but that one is from England.
Here she is in her new home!
Thank you so much, Tina-Marie! Such a lovely, lovely gift.
Note the handwritten (in pencil) “John File” on the edge of the cubby. This piece is so interesting!
I must admit that I am still procrastinating as to deductions. We have until Friday, which is what I told myself when I was feeling a bit wonky from allergies yesterday and just didn’t feel like adding up lots of figures.
It will get done. I guess, in true procrastinator style, I figure 5 more days isn’t ‘down to the wire.’ I will also have to remind Don every day for the next 5 days that he has to figure out his deductions as well.
We have two procrastinators in this family.
Happy Sunday.

hope you have time to relax and do things more fun than taxes … and that work is soon done. best wishes on the outcome.
i do pretty well with short deadlines, but try not to procrastinate. i do procrastinate, though, when i am inspired to write or paint … don’t want to stop …. and now i have a new interest – knitting my first (last?) pair of socks – which i will never wear. they will be put in a frame on the wall … ha.
happy sunday!

The braids are so cool!

I am saddened by the news today, on hearing of John McCain’s passing. While I didn’t always agree with him, I thought he was a great American hero, and I respected him as a man of integrity. He was a politician who had principles.
That is a darling egg cup…great find Tina-Marie! It looks wonderful in the cubby, too.
It would appear there are quite a few of us procrastinators who are readers. The deadline is Friday you say? Plenty of time! (Remember…I’m also an enabler.). Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
I may start in on the deductions tomorrow. We’ll see!

oh these posts you’re doing are so wonderful! I love little Maria!
and yes. John McCain will be missed. he was a good man. a man of integrity. and courage.
we lost a true statesman. he never was against the person. just the person’s position.
can you see anyone taking up for his opponent in an election and calling that opponent (Mr. Obama) a good and honest man? men of integrity and the grace of kindness are far and few between now and growing less all the time.
Claudia says
That sort of thing doesn’t happen anymore. It’s very, very sad.

Such wonderful words we are hearing today about Senator McCain. I, too, was not always in agreement with him, but never ever questioned his integrity and TRUE patriotism. Rare, indeed.
So, I was sitting here reading this morning. My husband had just left for the dog park w/ the 2 dogs. Did you ever feel as if someone/thing was amiss? I looked up and saw a baby squirrel in the window. However, it was on MY side of the window just sitting and looking at me. OMG. I shut several doors including the one into our bedroom where I sat and called for “assistance”. So happy the dogs weren’t here as Greyhounds normally live for and love to chase little animals in circles. I have no idea where the cat was, most likely sound asleep somewhere. So, they came home and I was rescued. No idea how it got in. Being so little we think maybe it slipped in behind my husband when he came home from church. It happily ran out the front door when it was opened. Enough excitement for today!!
We are back in big time heat and humidity today. ugh. AND chances of heavy rain later in the day. Hope you both have a good day!!
Claudia says
Oh my goodness! I bet it was a cutie pie!
It was probably scared to death, poor thing!
Vicki says
You spoke so eloquently of John McCain. We knew the day was coming but when I found out late yesterday evening he’d passed, I was and still am very sad because we lost someone who was a champion for all of us. I read this today, maybe you did, too (CNN; Ana Navarro): “John gave a damn about the people of the world…until his last days he was showing political courage and moral clarity…honor John’s memory by not remaining in complicit silence against injustice and abuse, by not looking the other way when democracy is threatened, by not pandering to divisions and bigotry…honor John by not standing on the sidelines but joining the fight to defend those values which make America exceptional.”
He spent his entire adult life in service to his country. In service…to us.
Claudia says
Yes, he did. Who of us can say that?
Vicki says
Indeed. I’m glad he has the honor of lying in state at the Capitol building. I wish I could be there and pay my respects.
I’m now interested to hear about what you’ll say of playwright Neil Simon.
Worries me, of how ‘they’ say death sometimes comes in threes.
Nancy Blue Moon says
I could not say it better than you have…I have always tried to when it comes politicians, to look at the actions of the person instead of which party they belonged to….John McCain was the bravest man in politics that I can ever recall…I don’t know if we will ever see another like him!…Little Maria is adorable!
Claudia says
Thank you, Nancy!
Laura says
John McCain was a true patriot. I agree with everything that you said about him, and it is unfortunate that he seems to be among a dying breed of Republicans with true integrity. Our country needs a strong two party system that puts country before party. He did that and although like you I didn’t agree with a lot of his policies I never doubted his patriotism. xo Laura
Claudia says
We are fast running out – we may have already run out – of honorable Republicans.
Kay says
I too disagreed more often than not with Sen. McCain but I did respect him. He worked with our great Sen. Feingold for campaign finance reform and it is so sad that kind of bipartisan legislating doesn’t happen anymore. And in this neck of the woods we all remember when, fresh from the Republican convention, he brought his bubble-headed running mate to our little town for their first joint appearance. I think of it every time I walk through the intersection where the stage was. Had to laugh at my late mother’s congressperson’s tribute. Paul Ryan wrote, apparently with no self awareness whatsoever, that the senator always “put country over party.”
Your new egg cup is adorable. I’d rather look at that than figure tax deductions too.
Claudia says
Paul Ryan has no self-awareness. And he thinks we buy all the platitudes he hands out. We don’t!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I feel much the same way as you do about John McCain. Our country has so far to go to change the evils that have befallen us under this administration.
Love the egg cup. So cute and just so different. What a wonderful gift. I love the blogging world and how it has let us makes friends from so many different places. Maria looks so cute in your cubby.
Claudia says
I have been blessed with great blogging friends!

I am so glad that Maria is living happily with you and Don! When I first saw her, all I could think of was “Claudia!” She has found her forever home.

Thank you so, so much, Tina-Marie. I really love her!
