Meeting Dogs & Naming the Koala

May 13, 2010 at 12:56 am by Claudia

You know how much I miss my two babies:

I even miss their demanding ways. They called me on Mother’s Day, you know. Riley barked and Scout howled and Don assured me they were saying “Happy Mother’s Day.”

San Diego has always been dog happy. There are dogs everywhere. There are dog beaches, dog parks, dog washes….you name it. We partook of it all when we lived here. I’ve always been the type to stop and talk to dogs and their owners. Can’t help it. Now that I am seriously dog-deprived, I have to stop and chat with every dog I see. I’ve met two Boston Terriers named Dot and Dash, a little dog that had just been adopted 2 hours earlier and was giving her new owner a run for her money, a sweet, elderly dog with 3 legs who travels in a stroller, and many more.

These little encounters help me in this prolonged period away from my babies. I get my ‘fix’ and meet some wonderful dogs and their owners. I always leave each meeting with a smile on my face and a lighter heart.

I saw my little Koala twice today. On the way home, I saw him/her stand and stretch but I couldn’t get my camera out quickly enough to snap a photo. Instead: sleeping. I think we should think of a name for this little one. I can’t think of one (I think I have too many Shakespearean words in my head) so will you leave your suggestions? I’ll post all your ideas and then I’ll pick one. Thanks in advance, my friends!

Look at how cute your babies are! Love that shot of them! :-)

Okay, as to names. I always liked Yogi as a name for a bear, for obvious reasons. LOL! But what about an Australian name. You could name it Dundee after Crocodile Dundee.

Then there are names that are just cute like Colby (after the cheese) or Martin. He looks like he might wear glasses and be named Martin. But do we know if it’s a boy??? How about Diego as in San Diego.

He’s kind of stout like a Toby jug, so you could call him Toby. The world is your oyster, Claudia! My poor tired brain might be better equipped to think in the morning.

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

Your lovely dogs make me miss my Arrow, dead nearly 20 years. (I think of that song..”Mister Bo Jangles… after 20 years he still grieves”…) Your white dog is the duplicate of my black dog. Smart and aware.

I think you should name the Koala Dennis. Just because I think that is funny.

Hello Claudia love your blog, coming from Australia I think Blinky Bill is an excellant name ,there is a children’s story book about Blinky Bill. When I have visited my daughter in San Diego I love going to the Zoo, almost as good as our Tarongo Zoo in Sydney. Now there would be a good name Sydney , no just being silly now. Take care Lynn

Claudia, I am partial to the name Romeo for the koala, since you are obviously in love with the little guy.

    Hi Claudia:
I’m going to go with my first instinct on a name for “your” koala…”Clip”! (started thinking about how they love eucalyptus leaves and well, it just went from there).lol

Perhaps, Don can put together a little doggie video for you! I’d be missing Kes like crazy, too, if I’d be away from her as long as you are.

    Be well.
    Hugs,
    Donna

Good morning from Frog Hollow Farm. What a cute little guy, I’ve never seen such a tiny koala! There are no lights on in the ‘naming koalas’ part of my brain – I love some of the suggestions from your followers – Romeo especially. Your husband sounds like a doll, taking the time to have your dogs call you on Mother’s Day – just wonderful! Ciao, bella!

Hmmmmm He/she sure sleeps a lot! like Colby except you would no doubt spell it with a ‘K’ and it would suit a him OR a her I think. Now for your canine cuties…how darling are they looking into the camera like that???!!!

I’m so unoriginal in thinking of names for animals and kids. All of my kids have names that are on the ‘most popular lists’ and my dogs, too! I didn’t plan it that way, it just happened.

I love all of the names suggested so far. Martin is just adorable.

Hmmmm… how about Vegimite? Just kidding. I really like Sheila’s idea— Dundee.

    Hi Claudia,

I just saw the sheep. I might have to have them. I love sheep and I thinkthey may need a new home, in my house. Did you get the price?

Thanks for the lace shawl comments, I am having a great time knitting it, that is when I get the time to knit.

I think we should call the Koala Darcy, after you guessed it. Mr. Darcy the most wonderful romantic figure in history. Darcy could be a girl alos, just in case.

    Love and miss you,
    Mere

Hi Claudia! I think of you so often being so far away from your sweet pups and your husband too. Just concentrate on your work and know that you are providing for them. When you get home, your reunion will be so happy!! By the way, that Koala is a sweet little doll!!

    Love,

    What a nice greeting…a Howl and a Bark. If it’s a boy…Mate and if it’s a gal…Shelia!

Looks like you have some very good suggestions! It’ll be fun to see what name the Koala answers to. What do Koala’s say anyway?

Love your dogs! We had a Mini-Pincher but he was too much for us to handle as he got large for a mini and strong as a bull. Hubby’s sis took him but they live 856 miles away. I would love to find a docile or just less hyper dog as my hubby loves them so much and I do too! Your babies are beautiful and I can see why you miss them!

I’m coming up empty on names myself. Think I’ve got too much crowded into my brain right now. The name will come to you, and you’ll know it’s the right one as soon as you land on it.

    Hi Claudia!

Your fur babies are adorable! I’m the same way when I’m away from mine. I get my dog fix wherever I can find it. ;-)

Hmmmm, a name for the koala….that’s a tough one. I’m going to think on it and get back to you. He’s a cutie!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
