Memo to Rain: Please Leave

June 13, 2013 at 8:38 am by Claudia

thurs-sky

I’m leading with this shot of the beautiful, fluffy cloud-filled sky I took yesterday because today we are getting heavy rain.

Again.

All day.

All night.

thurs-creek

(the creek across the street from our cottage)

I’m sick of it. Our overloaded creeks and rivers are sick of it. My peonies, who have been rudely snipped, taken from their home and brought inside because of the rain are sick of it. My catalpa that keeps losing flowers because of the heavy downpours is sick of it. Scout, who has to have her paws wiped every time she comes in from the rain, is sick of it. And mostly, the ceiling in our bedroom, where there is a leak, is sick of it.

Okay. I got that out. Now if I can just scream a few times, I’ll feel better. But Don’s still sleeping, so that’s a no-no.

We mowed yesterday in anticipation of the coming rain.

thurs-agirl&herdad

Here’s Scout greeting her dad after watching him mow through the openings in the porch railing.

Most of the time she likes the porch. But when she is there alone and we are on the other side of the railing doing something or other, well, that’s another story. She barks.

thurs-bark

Outraged barks. I mean, why would we even consider doing something without including her?

thurs-cutie

She’s thinking: maybe I should use my abundant charm…

daylily

My first batch of daylilies has opened. This particular plant always blooms first. Lots of blooms for a day or two, then nothing else the rest of the summer.

Thurs-daylilies

Our little kissing boy and girl seem to be hiding behind the plants, hoping they can’t be seen.

Thurs-rose

thurs-newdawnbud

Is that a New Dawn rose bud I see? Only one of the buds has opened and I decided not to include it in a post. Why? Because it opened during another in a series of torrential downpours. It wasn’t as pretty as it was meant to be.

Rain, rain, go away. Don’t come again another day.

So, it’s dark and gloomy and here we be. I suppose I can get through two acts of Much Ado today. Might as well take advantage of being stuck inside.

What’s the weather like where you live? And if it’s sunny and beautiful, please be kind.

Happy Thursday.

    Claudia,
I’ll take the rain over the HOT (90plus degrees) humid weather we’re having here in Kansas City. Every time the air conditioner turns on and I have to move the lawn sprinkler to save the baby grass replacing what died from the drought of last year, I see dollar signs. UGH, I hate this hot weather. Give me San Diego weather and I’ll be a very happy camper.

Of course, you know I’m not in San Diego. I’m in New York state. But I have to tell you that San Diego weather is no longer like it was when I lived there. It used to be consistently in the 70s or low 80s with no humidity. No more. It gets over 100 degrees hot and it gets very humid. Things are changing.

I am sick of it as well. Although I get a rather perverse thrill when our local river is full and running fast. I think because it is so powerful and scary.

Are you sure you want to know how our weather is? I’m just going to write a post about our, as they are calling it, the day that was! We spent a good part of the day and evening under a Tornado Watch with pounding rain, hail and huge winds, with many, many funnels spotted and several that touched down. Today is clean up day. I’m happy to report that we have no damage and our beautiful garden is still standing. The first of many summer storms but the scariest to date.

I hope the rain ends soon for you and Don and Scout. And for your gorgeous garden too! I love the rain (makes me creative and I write a lot) but when it keeps coming and coming and coming, it gets to be depressing. Hoping soon the sun will come out, dry up the wet and your flowers will bloom in the warmth.

That storm totally missed us here in east central Ill. But it is really cool this morning. We mowed last night or I should say Roger mowed, I used the push mower to trim some. That thing is so heavy it is like moving a truck with the breaks on!

    Good morning Claudia,
Sorry about your rain storm(s). Our weather is lovely, however, our spring has just begun after weeks of rain, rain and more rain. Our rivers and creeks are also high and I’ve only recently planted summer annuals outside, definitely late this year. The mosquitoes are worse than usual due to the excessive moisture but we’re happy to be outside, sitting, sipping, chatting and living. Life is good. I DO love a rainy day when you’re stuck inside, together, so cozy :)

Sorry it seems that the rain is ruining things your way – I would take that over the heat here in Texas any day of the year. We have been in a drought for over five years and it has been absolutely awful. This year our Spring has been longer and we are getting rain. Yes we’ve had some flooding but for once our aquifer is back to where is should be and we could possibly be pulling out of this drought. Climate is changing everywhere….absolutely everywhere. We have to adjust and change to slow the process…do all that we can.

I hope you dry out soon and your gardens aren’t too destroyed from the rain. Have a blessed day!

Sorry to tell you today looks to be very pleasant here, but yesterday evening we had a terrible downpour/storm. We’ve had a wet June too. I’m afraid of what that will do to the mosquito crop this summer. They can really ruin a season! Nice photos!

We, too, have had much rain this spring. Last night was tornado watches and warnings and heavy rains again, which followed a very humid warm day. Today is glorious with sunshine, no humidity and a high expected of about 78*. Perfect. But more rain in 2 days again. After the drought of last summer, I am thinking rain is better. However, when it is too much……. the flowers and crops seem to suffer yet again. And after the very long, awful, terrible, crummy winter we endured, to look out and see the green of the grass and the trees, and the wonderful flowers ~~ it is almost breathtaking. I promised I wouldn’t complain once our very late spring finally arrived ……. so I will merely observe and frequently comment. I will challenge anyone who says it is complaining!!

Hi Claudia, It’s drizzly here, so I have nothing to flaunt. ;-) Scout looks so adorable in that “abundant charm” photo! Yes, today is going to be a good day to get things done inside. I hope to take some photos of minis I made for my Etsy shop and maybe even get them listed. xo Jennifer

It was almost 100 degrees here yesterday. The same is predicted for the rest of the week. Allergies are driving me crazy!! Your flowers are gorgeous but not as pretty as that precious Scout! The nerve of you leaving her alone on the porch. Don’t you know she just wants to come out and help? LOL

    Have a great weekend.

She almost looks like she wants to talk in the last picture… and despite all the rain, your flowers look gorgeous!! I hope dryer days are ahead – have a good Thurs!! Francine

Thunderstorms and POURING down rain last night with some wind for awhile…dreary, rainy off and on and chilly today. However I am not complaining. We did not have Derecho , tornadoes, golf ball sized hail and all the other dire predictions I heard all day yesterday which were getting kind of scary! :)

I’m sorry you got our rain…we got 2 inches! But, I think it’s better than last year’s drought. What I’m not sure of is, if we will ever see normal again, or what we thought was normal! ;)

Rain, thunderstorms, frightening black sky in the middle of the day, hale, tornado warnings, oh what a day! Just came in to prop my feet up after helping my husband cut up wood from all the broken tree limbs. I agree, enough already!

My great aunts used to sit on the porch each summer and talk about the weather and how it had changed since they were young. They blamed it on men going into space. They said we were going where we didn’t belong. It has rained a lot this week here in Delaware. i don’t mind it, we put in new plants so I haven’t had to get the hose out. And we have an air conditioner. Can you imagine how damp and ucky everything would be without AC?

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
