Midweek

February 18, 2026 at 9:12 am by Claudia

Thank you so much for your lovely thoughts on the 18th anniversary of the blog. They mean a great deal to me. Bless you. Without all of you, I’d just be talking to the ether.

The snow is slowly melting but we have so much on the ground that it’s going to take a long time. In the meantime, I suppose we’ll get more snow. Sigh. I spent the other day filling nylon knee-highs with salt, tying them off, and throwing them up on the edge of the roof over the kitchen. Don helped out and came up with the idea to tie some wire around the end. The wire hangs down and we can easily remove the whatever-you-call-’ems. The ice was so thick on the edge of the roof that it wouldn’t melt. These little devices help to jumpstart the process. I learned about them during the winter where I was all alone here with Scout (Don was acting in Boston.) We don’t want any ice dams on the roof.

Fun, right?

We’re watching the Olympics, of course. We haven’t missed a night. It’s a nice escape from the turmoil going on around us. I’m in awe of the athletes, no matter what country they are representing. I cheer for all of them.

The other day, I was clearing out a big basket and I found this little wicker baby carriage. I completely forgot I had it! It’s very old. I bought it way before I got into Blythes and little dolls. So it was a lovely surprise. It’s now living on the Blythe shelves. But first, Derek took it for a spin.

It is decorated with hand painted flowers.

The little pad for the baby is hand stitched. So lovely. The carriage is lined with what is now very fragile fabric.

Gosh, it’s so sweet! This happens rarely, but I love it when I rediscover something I had forgotten existed. Especially when it’s so sweet!

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Glad to hear your snow is finally melting…ours, too. It was 64 here on Monday….and today it’s to hit 62…but I think it’s a false spring, because snow is predicted for Friday I believe. Short lived, but much appreciated. And this morning, I heard the call of the cranes….Spring is coming.

We used that knee high/salt trick several years ago, and I was surprised that it even worked lol. Ice dams are not welcome here either,

It’s been fun watching the Olympics…and heartbreaking at the same time. And I cringe every time an athlete falls….no matter the country. Someone’s hopes have been dashed.

Cute buggy you rediscovered…I expect we’ll see it more in future pics? Enjoy your day! ;)

Wow! 64! We’re excited about 40 degrees. I’m sure it’s a false spring, too early. But I’ll take any warming I can get.

      Thanks so much, Donnamae.

      Stay safe.

It’s a rare week of cold temps (low 50’s) here as a rain storm is blowing south from Alaska. Yesterday evening, we had a short burst of thunder and lightning, seemingly right over our house! I’m glad I don’t have to contend with leaks as those windows were replaced last year.

We’re all still sick. Just a cold not flu or COVID but it’s brutal nevertheless. The daughters have it worse than I do. Lots of coughing.

I’m also watching some Olympics. Curling is my favorite.

Love the wicker carriage. I love wicker everything. I have my maternal grandma’s wicker chair, which I moved to my bedroom from my sewing room. It didn’t fit well in the sewing room and just became another surface to dump stuff. Now, I sit in it almost every night to stitch or read and one of my cats loves to sleep on it at night. I remember grandma sitting in it by her back door in the afternoon when the sun hit that side of the house. She’d have a nice break sitting in the sun and often in summer, give us money to run to the corner store to buy ice cream novelties. She only spoke Cantonese and always asked us to buy the “white color” for her. It was her way of asking for a vanilla ice cream that came in a little cup with the wooden spoon.

What a lovely story, Wendy. My grandmother had a beautiful wicker rocker, which I always wanted. But I think my sister who has cut us all out of her life has it now. Ah, well. I hope it brings her peace.

I remember the vanilla ice cream with a wooden spoon. Love vanilla!

      Stay safe.

Isn’t it fun to rediscover little treasures we have tucked away and forgotten about? It’s almost like going shopping but doesn’t cost anything. We are getting freezing rain/sleet/snow today. The wires are getting coated in ice so hope we don’t lose power. Ah, winter! When will it end? Stay safe. Hugs, Elaine

Same here! Rain and freezing rain.

I will be happy to say goodbye to this winter.

      Stay safe and warm, Elaine.

happy for you to have a warm-up, however slight it might be. the salt-bags tip is interesting (new idea to me). hope they prevent problems for you. must be careful with scary ice on the roof so glad if you can prevent it.

what a sweet find that wicker carriage is! and derek is so cute.

that first photo made me look again … at first i thought it was of a life-size home. that’s how good your work is, claudia!

glad you’re enjoying the olympics. as much as i love most winter sports, i’ve not seen a second of the olympics beyond what’s shown on the news. i am 0% a competitive person and i 100% want everyone to win, so watching sports is stressful for me. don’t need stress.

back to figuring out a knitting problem.

    happy, safe days to everyone.

I’m not competitive, but I have no problem watching the Olympics. Whoever wins, wins! I’m a fan of all the competitors.

      Thanks so much, Kathy.

What’s Derek’s story? He looks so dearly loved and so adorable. Yours since childhood? Mom’s? A wonderful find somewhere? Tell more! That carriage is adorable. And I never heard of the salt bags. Great idea!

I bought him a couple of years ago from a fellow Blythe collector. This kind of bear is very popular with Blythers. He is a darling.

      Thanks so much, Jeanie.

The doll house is fabulous. You are amazing.
I have been following you for so many years and not always commenting.
At some point you were giving away 2 tickets to the Country Living Magazine Fair (I think I’m correct). I was picked! It was a fun adventure! Everywhere we went, I hoped to see you… :) No luck on that.
The snow is melting ever so slowly and the sky is very gray here. 33F is not bad at least it’s a double digit!

I remember those tickets! So glad you were the winner, Betsy.

And double digits are are good thing – the weather has been crazy!

      Stay safe.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
