Today is Meredith’s birthday! I have to call her, both to wish her a Happy day and to catch up. You know how I feel about her. There isn’t a kinder human being or a more giving sister or parent or friend. I pray that this year things will get much better for her. She deserves everything good.
It’s a quiet weekend here – except for the fireworks that went off on July 1st (not the 4th) in the campground that is down the road. The fireworks went off right behind our property. No warning, no email to neighbors, nothing. They were so close and so incredibly loud that I couldn’t help thinking about all the wild animals and birds that must have been very, very frightened. And pets – you remember Scout went ballistic when there were fireworks. Collies have acute hearing and Scoutie was a Border Collie. We never left home on the 4th. I read on the local page that a dog was seen running frantically across a road during some fireworks.
Do we need them? No. I wrote a message to the campground on their Facebook page complaining about the fact that none of us were alerted beforehand.
Moving on.
Lucy has new eye chips.
They’re a greenish blue, depending on the light. She came with grayish chips and two pair of iridescent chips that – though beautiful – always seemed spooky to me. I want to replace another side-positioned pair as well. But that was enough for yesterday.
She needed a little color.
The doll spa has closed until further notice.
More rain on the docket today, though it’s sunny right now.
And humid.
Stay safe.
Happy Monday.

Fortunately, I live in the country with few neighbors so haven’t had to endure the days and days of fireworks. But all my town friends hate it every year. Very, very annoying!
Claudia says
I live in the country – well, sort of – as well. But every neighboring small town does fireworks. I’m hoping that tonight and tomorrow night they’re rained out.
Stay safe, Darlene.

I do love seeing fireworks. They are magic to me. But, the older I get…the more the sound of exploding fireworks gets to me. It makes me jump if I’m not expecting it. I can’t imagine what an animal feels…other than pure terror I would imagine. I know our cat runs and hides…course he hides from the vacuum, too. The campground should’ve definitely warned it’s neighbors….that’s just a good business practice I would think.
Hope you have a lovely chat with Meredith! ;)
Claudia says
I doubt they’ll do anything. They seem to have free rein with our town council.
Stay safe, Donnamae.
kathy in iowa says
happy birthday to meredith! i hope she enjoys a day full of love and other fun things and that the year ahead is bright and easy for her.
good luck with the rain.
the doll spa has done very good work! reminds me to cut my (pixie-style) hair soon. probably today. been cutting my own hair since covid started (and occasionally some bang and over-the-ears trims when it bugged me or i couldn’t get an appointment before the pandemic) and am okay with still doing that … not perfect, but quick, easy, free and works for me!
agree about fireworks. a few years ago a law passed to make it legal for individuals to buy and set off fireworks (added to the list of things about which i disagree with our governor). i doubt it would be reversed, but i’d like the people who set off fireworks to please stop … it scares some people and all the animals! the two streets immediately to the west of mine are for a very nice little park and as a result are dark and secluded at night, making a “great” place for someone to set off fireworks. thankfully that’s only for a very few nights, but in the meantime … ugh.
if it’s being done this year, we plan to watch the boston pops concert and fireworks on tv (tonight on public television, i think) … it’s a tradition of many years in my family. no crowds, no mosquitoes, just easy. :)
happy early day-you-met to you and don!
happy, safe monday to everyone.
kathy

Having lived in Boston, I’ve been to those fireworks in person. They’re pretty spectacular!
Stay safe, Kathy.
Kay in SE WI says
That’s awful about no warning for fireworks practically on your property line. We live in a sort of Minneapolis/St. Paul situation albeit on a much smaller scale. So this time of year there’s fireworks every night. First our village does theirs. The next night the town that begins at the end of our block does theirs. Then there’s all the freelancers out there every night starting last Friday setting them off in their backyards.
Since we have had no rain to speak of, I think they should cancel all fireworks displays in this part of the country for this summer but that’s just me.
Take care,
Kay
Claudia says
Yes, they should! There’s a real fire danger.
Hang in there, Kay.
Stay safe.
jan says
on thursday or friday we were woken up by fireworks explosions around midnight. No warning here. And now it is every day until the 4th and then we will probably have some on the 5th too.
Claudia says
It really is too much!
Stay safe, Jan.
Susan says
I completely agree with you re the fireworks Claudia. They started in my development on Friday. I always think these people must not have pets or they simply do not care. I try to get my little dogs out early and hope they can wait until the fireworks stop. I find it quite heartless and think they should be left to the professionals in the right location.
Claudia says
It definitely should. And if there has to be fireworks, one display only.
Stay safe, Susan.
Elaine in Toronto says
I remember a dog jumping into our car (it was parked and we were getting into it) one Canada Day. Poor little thing was frightened to death. We comforted it as best we could and finally the owner ambled by quite unconcered about how frightened the dog was. Yikes! Happy Birhday to Meredith. Enjoy your catchup call. Hugs, Elaine
Elaine in Toronto says
PS. Love Lucy’s new eyes. Very pretty.
Claudia says
Thank you!
Claudia says
Poor baby! It’s terrifying for them.
Stay safe, Elaine.

Well, my company for the past three days left after breakfast. I am now finishing off the laundry and putting the house back together. I miss my family….and the fun we have when we are together but I am now 76 and the shopping and cleaning and cooking knocked me out. We were a group of 11 and the dog makes 12 and I have a tiny home but we managed to go to the boat and sail and come home and jump in our small pool and feast on all the wrong foods and play board games and show old family slides and hug oneanother. Now the house is so quiet….just the sound of the washing machine doing the last load. I tuned in to your little corner for a moment of reflection and to have some pinot gris and put my feet up. I know the crazy fireworks will start soon in our neighborhood….so am enjoying the peace. Love the color of Lucys eyes….. Meredith sounds like a lovely person and as unique as you are. Have you been able to plan a visit. I hope so. In the meantime….take care and have a good 4th of July.
Claudia says
Sounds like you had a wonderful get-together with family!
Stay safe, Maria.
Marilyn Schmuker says
I live in the country too. The last 2 days have been loud with fireworks. Last night I thought someone was shooting a cannon next door…huge booms periodically! We have at least 2 more nights of it. Fortunately, my cat is not at all bothered by the noise. I am sure these have been by a few people nearby, just private homes not communities.
I’m not sure what is allowed to be sold in Michigan but there are fireworks shops that pop up every year. Then there are the people that go outside and shoot off their guns.
Happy birthday to Meredith!
Take care
Claudia says
I saw some fireworks for sale the other day. I’m hoping it rains tonight!
Stay safe, Marilyn.

I hear you on the fireworks. Our scheduled lake fireworks were supposed to be July 1. We waited and waited to no avail. The barge on which they were placed — on the lake — sank, along with the fireworks. Never fear! Bad Neighbor Trevor (whose family we refer to as the Louds — because they are — blew off plenty of huge ones. A spark hit the roof of the neighbor next to them — which also happens to be the neighbor next to me. At 11:30 I turned over in bed, saw flashing lights through the curtains. I went out to see if I should leave — there were six fire trucks and EMT vehicles — they probably didn’t need that many but if anything had got out of hand, it would have been grim. We may have a lake in front — but the back is woods and it could have been tragic. Erring on the side of caution was wise for our little fire department. I hear more tonight — not super close but it freaks me out. Too dry, too dangerous — and poor Lizzie is a mess. I really hate July 4.
Claudia says
My god! It’s truly dangerous and this idiot neighbor had no business doing any of that!
Stay safe, Jeanie.
