Monday: Errands and the Shed

December 4, 2023 at 9:12 am by Claudia

After heavy rain all day yesterday, a little bit of sun is most welcome. Both of us were running errands yesterday and it was a soggy mess. But I have to mail another Etsy purchase today, so I had to get supplies. It was one week ago that I first went to Target and found some neat little Christmas things while I was picking up packing supplies. They were gone as of yesterday. Most of the Christmas lights are gone, as well. The little sweaters? Gone. The sweet little deer? Gone. I saw one little parka ornament, but since Kathy sent me some from her Target, I didn’t need to buy it. (Well, to be frank, I don’t need to buy any of those ornaments, but they’re cute and they’re cheap!) I was amazed, as always, that by December 3rd, most everything has been picked over.

Came home, packed the vase I’m sending out today, and then I read for quite a while. Don made an apple pie. We watched 42nd Street  last night.

Today, I’m off to the Post Office, then the yearly clean up of the porch begins. Time to dump out the contents of the pots, and begin to move them all into the shed for the winter. The shed needs sweeping, the snow blower and lawnmower need to exchange places and I need to find the bin that holds the bedroom a/c unit. The cushions on the chairs and the glider also have to be brough inside.

This will be accomplished over the course of a few days. Don will help with the heavy stuff. When I’m done, I’ll hang the Christmas lights from the porch railings. I can’t wait – those lights are such a cheery sight out here on a road with no street lights. That’s why I leave them up for a couple of months beyond Christmas. They’re a little beacon of light to those passing by.

We’re going to get our tree on Wednesday or Thursday.

I decorated the girls’ cubbies by adding some cheery scrapbook paper to the rear wall in each cubby. They’re all different and I’ll show you some time this week, but today I decided to treat those of you who might be less than entranced by the girls a day off.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

You’re going to be a busy girl the next few days! Love your sofa — it looks very comfortable and green goes so well with oak. I need to dig out our tree too. Congratulaions on successfully selling off your extra pottery. I can see atop your cupboard some of your remaining pieces. Looks nice up there. Hope you have a good week.

first, you and this mhc community are beacons of light! :)

second, adding lights to the porch will be beautiful and is a very thoughtful gift to passersby. :)

no blythes-break needed! i hope you post what you want when you want.

good luck with all the chores (especially the heavy-lifting ones),then enjoy the good feeling of having them done! :)

another cold morning here (i love it), but it’s supposed to reach nearly 50 degrees every day this week and 58 one day. grateful for the ease, but not it being due to global warming. the feeders and deck have been crowded with birds and earl, given no precipitation. i’m glad it’s easier for them right now, too.

hope you all have an easy day, too. stay safe.

Claudia, I finally watched Spoiler Alert yesterday. I was sobbing during your scene, but I was impressed with you acting! You were very convincing as a hospice nurse who seen a lot, and I am a nurse! Great movie. I know I’m very very late to the party but I had to give my opinion.

Surely everyone loves your girls. We got mail yesterday, on Sunday, and it was Jessie and Walter’s Christmas jammies. They are so cute. You have a busy day planned, Claudia. Pace yourself. We leave our lights up way past Christmas as I love to see them in the cold winter months. We have candles in the living room window and we light them until Valentines Day. We plan on getting our tree on Wednesday. Take care when you’re out and about. Enjoy your pie. Hugs, Elaine

I found that during Covid 2021, people left their lights up and bright much longer and I loved it because a) it was so cheery and b) I didn’t feel like so much of a slacker! I love seeing them when I come home in the dark (which is about any day after 5.)

I’m sorry you didn’t find more deer and such. I’m hoping to get to Target today. Yesterday just didn’t work out. Not specifically for any of those cute things, though I might be inclined if I saw them. Just a general Target run.

We’re due for some snow tomorrow. I’m supposed to be taking Rick to Metro at 5 a.m., and then hoped for an IKEA/Trader Joe trip on the way home. But if the weather is lousy I might put him on the bus or just come straight back home. We’ll see. It sounds like you have a busy day on tap — Enjoy!

I wasn’t actually looking for anything at Target – I just thought I’d see how much was still there!

I hope it all works out with Rick and travel tomorrow!

      Stay safe.

I love the rhythm of the seasons, and how you document them on your blog. Cleaning off the porch, exchanging the places of the lawnmower and the snowblower, etc. I also love how the things we clean away are always replaced by something equally joyful, such as the warmth of Christmas lights on a dark, cold road. Looking forward to seeing the dolls’ new wallpaper!

Our weather has been much colder and snowier than yours, so we had our outdoor areas cleared off weeks ago. As well as the annual lawn mower/snowblower exchange. I bet you can’t wait for your porch lights to shine.

Our tree is up and fluffed, and a few bulbs replaced…which are my usual tasks. But, the last couple of years, I’ve delayed placing the ornaments so I can just enjoy the simple beauty of a lighted tree. Besides….it looks terrific in the morning on these blah days. Wednesday sounds like a good day for ornaments…maybe.

While I don’t collect Blythe’s…i still enjoy seeing them, and am looking forward to seeing their cubbies all decorated. ( I saw their distress on Instagram….waiting for you to finish decorating. Oh my….hope they recovered.) lol!

    Enjoy your day! ;)

I enjoyed seeing the Girls in their new parkas as I was sitting in mine waiting for the house to warm up when I got home from work.
It’s been bitterly, bitterly cold this past week and we had snow over the weekend.

Glad to see that your pottery sales are doing well. I wasn’t familiar with it before your website, there’s some lovely colours in your collection.

    Happy Monday

McCoy Pottery is a distinctly American pottery, Dee Dee, so I’m not surprised you are unfamiliar with it.

      Thanks so much, Dee Dee.

I have some dark ‘curio’-style cabinets I want to use but the stuff I put in them is just swamped by all that darkness of the brown wood and while painting is of course an option, I’ve wondered about your scrapbook-paper idea, or even giftwrap or something. How do you cut to fit when you’ve got to reach far into the space/shelving; then, do you glue it with just ‘normal’ glue? I suck at doing anything like wallpaper or even shelf paper for dishware in the kitchen, and I’d struggle in my youth (school sewing classes) to cut fabric with a pattern; so, I’m obviously VERY challenged with this kind of task. Any tips are appreciated, and I’m looking forward to seeing what you did for the Blythe cubbies.

I painted the inside of the china cabinet a pale pink – the one in the den.

As far as papering – I used big sheets of scrapbook paper and didn’t waste a lot of time trying to be 100% accurate. I used the wax I use for objects in the dollhouse to put it up so that I have the option to remove it if I want to.

      Stay safe.

I love photos of your house! Looks so cozy and especially at Christmas time.
I love the photo of your house with the lights outside. It looks kind of foggy out. Could be on a Christmas card! I collect Dept. 56 villages and Byers Choice Carolers so I have been busy making our house into the North Pole. Much more motivated now to do it for my 9 year old grandson. It has helped my mood tremendously. Christmas always does. Love your little items from Target. Take care!

We used to collect Dept. 56 Dickens Village – but that was when we had a mantel. Those days are long gone!

I know what you mean about that kind of thing elevating your mood. Good for you!

      Stay safe, Deb.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
