More from the Wadsworth

February 5, 2016 at 9:56 am by Claudia

Ready for a picture heavy post? By popular request, I’m sharing more of the photos I took the other day at the Art Museum.

Here goes.

2-5 entrance gallery

This is the first gallery you see as you enter the museum. The lady in the foreground was a longtime employee of the museum and the artist Alex Katz made this in honor of her. It’s titled, “Margie.” There’s a photo of her standing next to the figure. (1971)

The figure in the background is made from rugs. “Sound suit” by Nick Cave (2009)

2-5 romaire beardon

In the same gallery, She-ba, by Romare Bearden (1970)

2-5 silhouettes

Silhouettes, cut from paper, by the artist Kara Walker. (2013)

2-5 dali

Salvador Dali – Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on a Beach (1938)

2-5 magritte

René Magritte – Les Intermittences du Coeur (The Fickleness of the Heart) (1950)

2-5 picasso

Pablo Picasso – The Artist (1963)

2-5 winslowhomer

Winslow Homer – Rocky Coast (Maine Coast) (1882-1900)

2-5 johnsingersargent

John Singer Sargent – Ruth Sears Bacon (I love this.) (1887)

2-5 matisse

Henri Matisse – The Ostrich Feather Hat (1918)

2-5 Monet beach

Claude Monet – The Beach at Trouville (1870)

2-5 Monetwaterlilies

Claude Monet – Nymphéas (Water Lilies) – (1907)

2-5 vangogh

Vincent Van Gogh – Self Portrait (1887)

2-5 Hals

Franz Hals – Portrait of Joseph Coymans (1644)

2-5 portraitgallery

One of the portrait galleries.

The museum has a vast collection of American Decorative Arts, where I encountered some of my favorite designers:

2-5 eames

Charles and Ray Eames

2-5 marcelbreuer

Marcel Breuer

2-5 franklloydwright

Frank Lloyd Wright

2-5 stickley

Gustav Stickley

It’s an amazing and wondrous museum and if I get over there again before my stay here ends, I’ll take more photos, okay?

In the meantime, I’m supposed to go home tomorrow and we’re getting at least 6 inches of heavy, wet snow today. Do you sense a pattern here? If I decide to make the trip home…it snows.

Cross your fingers for me!

Happy Friday.

It’s pretty bad here, Vera. And it keeps on coming so I have no idea how bad it’s going to be out there when it finally stops.

I’m loving my trip to the Wadsworth! I loved the desks by Stickley and especially Frank Lloyd Wright. Be safe going home and give Scout a pat from DEB.

I think I love the furniture as much as the paintings! Living quite near Frank Lloyd Wright’s House on the Rock, and his studios, I have always loved the (I think of it as) practicality of his furniture designs and the way he incorporated it into homes. And the Eames!!!! Did you get some ideas for the TSP?
Be safe on your travels!! Have a wonderful weekend at home w/ Don and sweet Scout.

Fingers crossed! I love the photos and the furniture exhibit. My favorite was the Sargent piece and it made me smile that you said you loved it also. Her little face just shines out at you. Really hoping you get home this weekend. Charlie is having a very bad morning but he has settled down to sleep for now. I’m thinking a trip to the Vet this afternoon? He has been starting to give me a look that I don’t want to see. He seems to be hurting and I can’t bear that for him.
    hugs,
    Linda

Oh, dear friend, I’m thinking of you and sweet Charlie. Scout hasn’t been doing all the well this week. We love our babies so much. I’m praying for your boy. And for you. Call if you need me. I’ll be at rehearsal from 3 -6, but otherwise, I’ll be here. xoxo

I discovered John Singer Sargent in my late teens and fell in love with his beautiful portraits. I also really like Winslow Homer. And Mary Cassatt. The American Impressionists were so talented.

    Isn’t Margie fun?

What a varied collection! Thanks again for sharing. Have a safe and uneventful trip home.

Dear Claudia, I look forward to your posts every night. I don’t receive then until 11:30 pm so I read them before I go to bed. I started buying myself flowers once a week and I have you to thank for that. I never really thought of doing that before. I have a white hobnail vase that I use and the flowers always look pretty. I enjoy reading about your life. I am sorry for the loss of your parent’s. My Husband passed away two years ago and life has never been the same. But having said that, this life I have now is my new normal. I am getting used to it. So I understand how you must feel at times. Having two new grandbabies helps me tremendously! Thank you again for the peek inside your everyday life. April

Claudia, have you ever considered guest-writing for travel blogs? They would be lucky to get you. I am forwarding an e-mail to you from the Connecticut Office of Tourism, as an example. Wish I knew someone over there.

Thank you for posting more art photographs. What an interesting collection, and your pictures really do it justice. Look at all of the comments thanking you for “the tour,” and even asking for more.

I know that you would love Elizabeth Park; the Rose Garden in particular. It’s a gem. Now that you have an extra vehicle, that might be a possibility.

Yes, I know about Elizabeth Park – are the roses in greenhouses? Otherwise, it would be a waste in the winter time?

The park is nice year-round. It was beautifully laid-out. To see color, however, you ought to visit in spring, summer or fall.

You will not be disappointed; I promise.

The greenhouses are quite old, Lord and Burnham, I believe, and are used for propagation and display. I’m not sure what you would find in them at this time of year.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
