Okay. I mowed and mowed and mowed yesterday. Since it’s going to rain today, it had to be done. But it left me feeling tuckered out by the end of the day. Maybe that’s the last mowing job for the year?
I don’t like the time change. Never have. The whole ‘gaining an extra hour’ thing has never impressed me. I still wake up when I wake up. I know it gives those who have to be somewhere this morning a little extra time, or in the case of someone like my husband who has five show weekend, an opportunity to catch a few more minutes of sleep. But when it gets dark way too early tonight, I’ll be cursing the whole thing.
This is the split-leaf philodendron that I nabbed at Terrain. I’ve repotted it, but I have some concern about the roots, which were completely coiled around the soil in the original pot. I’m wondering if it needs an even bigger pot. Like I said yesterday, I’ve never seen something so completely root bound. Maybe they’ll relax and sort themselves out.
I love the glossy quality of the leaves.
This pot is also from Terrain.
And the succulent called String of Pearls. Because who could resist?
I have been casually mentioning houseplants to Don to prepare him for the decided increase in green things he will see when he gets back home. Thankfully, Don likes plants (especially if I’m the one watering them!)
Checking in on the rescue dieffenbachia:
It’s looking better all the time.
Clearly, I’m transitioning from the outside to the inside. The last morning glory bloomed two days ago. Sigh. But I have nothing to complain about. It kept blooming into November and that’s the first time that has happened. I am grateful. So, ever the nurturer, I’m concentrating on my houseplants now as I prepare to say goodbye to my porch plants later in the week.
I’m having breakfast with Rick and Doug this morning. (Rick loves to eat out.) And then I’m trotting off to get my hair trimmed and, boy, does it need it!
Happy Sunday.
Debbie Price says
The plants are looking good! I love houseplants and when you live where winter can be brutal, they do bring a bit of cheer.
Have fun at breakfast!
Claudia says
So important to see green in the dead of winter, Debbie!
kathy says
your talent with and love for plants is obvious … they look great! wish i had such a “green thumb”.
enjoy your time with friends and that someone else is doing the cooking and clean-up!

It will be nice. I love going out for breakfast.
Melanie says
I tend towards more house plants in the winter, too since I miss my outside plants and flowers so much. Our local nursery carries string of pearl succulents, but I’ve never bought them. I’m not very good with succulents. No matter where I’ve tried them in the house, they don’t do well.
I might be going out to breakfast this morning, too. I talked to Tim last night about going out to breakfast with me this morning IF he can get up. He was out very late with his friends last night. There’s a hole-in-the-wall place a couple of miles up the road from us that has the best breakfast. I’m craving their hobo skillet!
You’re not the only one that loathes this time change. I hate that it will now get dark between 4:30 – 5:00. Makes the evening seem incredibly long. I’m not a TV watcher, and I can only be on my laptop for so long, so I end up lying on the couch and reading…and then inevitably starting to fall asleep around 7:30. To top it off, the weather this time of year here is dark and gloomy anyway. I really need to invest in one of those special lamps for S.A.D.
You had mentioned in the comments from your last post that Brian was lucky that he only had to clean out the gutters twice; that you’ve had to do them several times. Oh, it’s not that ours don’t NEED cleaning out more than twice. It’s that Brian only has time to do them twice! They are so clogged with leaves again right now. He could easily clean out the gutters every week during the fall. I can’t clean out the gutters – I am terrified of both ladders and heights.
Claudia says
Oh, of course! He’s working and doesn’t have time. I am the same way as you, Melanie. I won’t get up on the roof and I only climb about three rungs of the ladder. Very afraid of heights.
Mary D. says
I’ve been bringing in the plants I want to save. Hopefully, my office will feel like a greenhouse this winter while it’s snowing outside.
I feel the same about the time change. I’m already counting down to the day when we start gaining light at the end of the day.
Have a good day.
Claudia says
It’s 4:29 here and it’s getting dark! Do not like.
Donnamae says
Your plants look like they are adjusting nicely to your cottage…happy and healthy. My fern (Bowserβs actually), is still growing outside, because I covered it up for the two killing frosts we had. He likes to sleep under it on the deck…weird cat! I finally counted my houseplants…22. So…looks like I will spend the winter months gardening indoors. It keeps me sane.
Have fun at breakfast….breakfast is my favorite meal out! ;)
Claudia says
It keeps me sane as well, Donnamae. I understand!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
I, too, am already looking forward to Dec 21 when the days begin to get longer. It might only be a minute or two, but at least it is in the right direction. It sure is awful when it is dark by 5:00 (and soon even 4:30)! I still don’t quite understand why we continue to do this.
Love the new plant additions. I noticed today that my Christmas cactus has some very tiny beginning buds setting onto it! Have a peaceful Sunday, Claudia!!
Claudia says
It’s a rainy day here, but nevertheless, it’s getting dark and it’s 4:30. Congrats on your Christmas cactus, Chris.
Mare in Oregon says
I do not like the change to Eastern Standard Time either. I’d much rather have it lighter later in the evening than lighter earlier in the morning.
I am attempting to pare down my house plants but I do not have the heart to depose of them if they are still healthy so I try to give away to friends. Have not seen String of Pearls before – might have to look into that one.
Enjoy your breakfast (my favorite meal out) with your friends.
Claudia says
I couldn’t do anything negative to my house plants if they were still healthy, Mare. I understand!
Katheryn says
Hey Claudia,
Yep, I was up at 4:45 this am. great? No it was not.
I do love Autumn however; I notice it is coming later and later in the year and down here, one never knows how long winter will last. We are getting warmer and warmer. I like it cool and a bit on the colder side. It’s just me. I love fires and sweaters!
Your plants are so pretty. I love the white pot too!
Have a great rest of Sunday.
Claudia says
Oh boy. No, it was not great, Katheryn! So sorry.
I like it cooler, too. We need the cold and some outdoor plants definitely need a cold winter. Oh but there’s no such thing as climate change, right?
Nancy Blue Moon says
I also hate this time change thing…like you I woke up today at the same time I would have no matter what the clock said…I do love that split leaf philodendron…how pretty those shiny leaves are!…I like the tiny string of pearls too!…all of your plants look healthy to me….you just have a green thumb Claudia!…Hope you had fun with Rick and Doug at breakfast.
Claudia says
I have a fairly green thumb but nothing is failsafe, Nancy! But you know me, if something is going wrong, I research the heck out of it!
Wendy T says
Claudia, do you repot your house lands whenever you think they need it? I always try to repot when they are dormant but maybe I don’t need to? Some are really needing to be divided too.
Wendy T says
House plants…spellcheck is funny.
Claudia says
xo
Claudia says
I repot them when they need it. I’ve never even thought about waiting until they were dormant. You could research this, but I get a sense that it isn’t a factor.
Linda @ A La Carte says
The house plants look so good. I have one window that gets enough sun for plants and believe me between the plants and Annie that window is FULL. Annie loves to lay in her bed in the sun so I have to leave room for that. I do not like the time change and never have. Already getting dark and it’s not that late. I hope you had a good time with your friends this morning. I have so much to do this week, I hope I can get it all done. Hugs!
Claudia says
Of course, Annie must have her space! She’s too cute not to be accorded a place in the sun.
I’m in the same position as you – lots to do before I leave. Making lists as I write this.
Regula says
Good Morning, yes, this plant needs a bigger pot. It feels now like you and Don in a one bedroom flat. Have a nice day, hopefully, the sun will come out for you and your plants. Regula
Claudia says
I already potted it in a bigger pot.
I’m not sure what you mean by a ‘one bedroom flat?’ It’s a two bedroom, two story house.
Jane says
I do not like how dark it is in the morning (and dreary here), but I’ve always loved it getting darker sooner. Something about that extra cozy time before dinner prep to turn on lamps, read a little, and in ancient times, settle the kids down to quietly play or watch TV. Peace and quiet compared to summer!
I really love your plants. I heard the rule of thumb was 3X the diameter of the plant to the pot. The String of Pearls is awesome! Did you find that at Terrain also? So cool!
I stopped bringing any houseplants outside, or bringing anything in for the winter. They always seem to bring some sort of bugs or eggs with them. Ugh. And I’m really a notorious plant killer. Just can’t get it right. And I have no room…my rooms are tiny.
Miserable rain every day here. Blah. :(
Jane
Claudia says
Yes, I found the String of Pearls at Terrain.
Rainy here as well, Jane – yesterday and today!
