A peaceful, pretty photo from the garden…since things have not been all that peaceful in our own little patch of nature. The other day, while mowing the ‘back 40’ as we call it, I apparently mowed right over a nest of bees and got stung. I yelped rather loudly as I felt the red hot poker of a stinger go right through my sock. I didn’t realize until I went back to the scene of the crime that there was a nest inside a particular hole in the ground. There were about 50 bees swarming the lawnmower. I waited until they calmed down and slowly backed the mower out of the area. Luckily I have no allergies to bee stings and after a day of pain, all was well. You better believe that I stayed far away when I completed the mowing job a few days later!
Last evening, after relentless rain, I heard a sound, a sort of SWOOOSH. I knew it was outside and after looking out various windows, I saw branches on the ground. I ran outside to discover a large ash tree had completely uprooted and fallen to the ground. It is now straddling our property and our neighbor’s property. Luckily there wasn’t a fence there. The ash trees in this neck of the woods all have some disease that is slowly killing them. We have a lot of them on the property – mostly in the back. I suppose we should have them all taken down, but that is expensive. Husband has to call his friend who has a chain saw and deal with it in the next few days.
Nature has been a bit heavy handed lately.

BEEEEEES!!!!
That would have just cured me of ever mowing anything again.
Confession.
Once a bee flew into my car and I jumped out leaving my 2 year old in the car.
It was an instinctive move and I did get back in and grab the kid to wait for the bee to get bored and leave.
I just have an unreasonable fear of bees!

Ohhhhhh, I do not like bees and am allergic to them. Late Spring I think it was there were 100’s, 1000’s of bees swarming all around our neighbor’s redwood tree. They are across the street from us and it was in his front yard. I was panicking, praying they would not come over to our redwoods. You could hear them . . . some may have thought what a wonderful sight and sound but NOT me!!!! Hugs, Marsha

ZZZZZZZZZZZ! ZAP! I was trimming the azaleas & the hornets nailed me royally. So I sent DH out after things settled down & they nailed im, also. Then we bought stuff to eradicate them. DH got stung horrible on his lip … I don’t like bees at all. TTFN ~ Marydon

Oh my…ouch! My husband did the same thing a few years ago and we ended up having to take him to the emergency room. He got over 20 bites on his legs and swelled up really bad. You were blessed to get by with only one.

We call ours ‘the lower 40’. I’m glad you are not allergic to bees. That’s a good thing! Hugs

I’m so glad you weren’t allergic to the bees! Do you know the credit card trick for bee stings? If you get stung, don’t try to pull it out with your fingers– that will press more venom from the stinger into your skin. Instead, take a credit card and run it under and across the stinger and it will come out without causing extra pain. I’ve only been stung once and I tried it and it worked! I still had to ice my leg though. Never knew bee stings were so painful! Glad you’re okay– I will send happy nature thoughts your way!

Ouch! I haven’t experienced being stung but I can imagine those needles! definitely a good thing you are not allergic to them and that nothing really serious has happened.

It sounds like you have had a doozie of a week! I got chased into the house tonight by two lone bees! The little buggers were very persistant.

UGH!! See…. these are the things that make me think “CONDO!” :)
We have a historic house and a large property, too, and every time something like that happens the first thing I think of is “We wouldn’t be dealing with THIS in a condo!” ;)
May this week BEE much better!! :)

Mother Nature does seem to be mad this week! I am glad you only had one bee sting too. I do not mind bees, but I cannot stand hornets. Seems like when I am in my garden if I leave the bees alone they leave me alone-but a hornet will chase me every time. So sorry to hear about your ash trees- I hate to lose a tree. Good excuse to pick out a couple of new trees to start replacing them though:) Hope Mother Nature smiles on you next week :)

Oooh, I feel your pain with the bee sting. I sat on one once (no fun!!) and also stepped on one about 10 years ago, out in the backyard. The hummer feeder had been dripping sugar water and there was a bee down on the ground below it, feeding I suppose… And boy, did that smart, too!
Sorry about your tree. It’s so hard to lose big trees. We had a good portion of one of our maples come down in an ice storm this past winter and that part of the yard still looks bare to me.
