Music in the Barn

September 7, 2024 at 8:30 am by Claudia

We’re due for some rain this afternoon, maybe a little thunder. That’s okay with me, as we plan to take it easy this weekend and a rainy day sounds rather lovely. Oh, it just started to rain!

Last night, we attended the last concert in the series that Don coordinates. It was a lovely night and I got to see several of Don’s musician friends again. Sometimes it takes place in a park, but last night it was in a barn – Don’s favorite venue. I can see why. It’s very old, the inside is covered in a warm, natural wood. There’s a little area for a stage and two chandeliers hanging down from one of the beams. It’s an intimate space and the two barn doors – one on either side of the room were open, letting in the night air. Simply magical.

The first act was a group that Don discovered on one of his many searches for local musicians. They’re called Hammerhead Horns, and they play New Orleans style blues. They’re terrific. They have a lot of personality and a lead singer. Utterly charming.

The second was our friend Michele, who brought along some fellow musicians. One of them, John, played in the band for Escape to Margaritaville  and performed earlier this season with his own band in this same summer series.  Michele said it was the first time they had performed together in public and boy oh boy, were they great! It’s good to know that Michele is writing music again after the untimely death of her husband, Rick. Rick was an extraordinary person – he had a long career in big business, was a musician, and an incredible painter. He specialized in the glorious scenery of the Hudson Valley and his attention to detail was exquisite. He also had a recording studio and it is there that Don and his friend Dan recorded their CD. We miss him. So, it was a emotional and beautiful night. Michele is so talented.

Since I haven’t posted a photo of one of the girls in a while:

Here’s Pru.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

This sounds like such fun. I love concerts like this — and the season is so short. Extra fun that you could reconnect with old friends. It sounds just lovely! I hope the rest of the weekend is just as nice.

sounds like a great night of music and friendship! glad you went, that your friend michelle is writing and performing again. kudos to don for his efforts to make such a cool thing happen.

will there be more concerts next year?

pru looks a bit watchful. or maybe just patiently waiting? i like her outfit, especially the t-shirt and colorful socks.

hope you enjoy the cooler weather and rain and have a nice weekend. stay safe.

there was a beautiful old barn two blocks up the street from where my parents ultimately bought a newly-being-built townhome.
they wanted the barn, to turn it into their home but it had already been sold, for the land. barn gone, lots of homes in that little field now. sad.

cooler morning here. fed earl and the birds. hope to move a heavy old dark-oak arm chair to my apartment, water the five plants i still have, check the mail, etc. ordered some Christmas presents and hope to find them waiting outside my door. we will watch some football (nebraska, also iowa-iowa state rivalry) and go for a ride. also get some takeout for lunch (a new-ish thing, a change of pace and a break from cooking). online church tomorrow, laundry, hope to finish the third “vanderbeekers” book today and start the fourth (of seven).

hope everyone is well, happy, comfortable, safe. xo.

There will be more concerts next year – not sure yet whether Don will want to do it again. He’s booked the talent for the past two seasons. We’ll see.

      Thanks so much, Kathy.

      Stay safe.

glad those concerts will continue, no matter if don’s in charge or not. more than that, i hope that don gets to perform at them and anywhere else he wants as much as he wants, and that those performances, along with the auditions, lead to even bigger things for him.

happy, safe, book-full weekend to you both.

What a beautiful venue! Sounds like everything added up to a perfect night. Don certainly ended the series on a high note. Enjoy your day…the rain is a good reason to take it easy and relax.

Hello, Pru, you little charmer. Sounds like a lovely evening you and Don enjoyed last night. Nice to have a “day off” to relax and listen to the rain. Hugs, Elaine

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
