A message from Scout. She insisted.
I’m tired. Mom said we were going to have an adventure and we have. One day she said we were going for a “ride in the car” and I got all excited. That usually means we are going to that road where mom and dad take me for a walk. But this ride was a lot longer. When we finally got out of the car we were in a strange place.
We went in this building and we entered something that has doors that open and close and that moves up and down. Mom says it’s an elevator. I looked up and I could see myself in the mirror at the top of the box. I liked that.
We came into a strange room.
I spent the next hour sniffing everything. I paced. I worried. I drank so much water that mom thought I might explode.
Then she took me back in the box and we went down. And we went outside.
Lots of noisy cars and trucks and horns and police sirens!
Lots of smells!
We went to this place called a park and oh my goodness! I can’t even tell you how much I love it there! I sniff, I pee, I sniff some more, I walk on sidewalks, I see other dogs! Yesterday I met a little dog that was a beagle/doxie mix. We liked each other.
I get all excited about our visits to the park and I pant and pant and pant and then I’m tired again.
One time, a girl named Nathalie came to visit. Mom left and Nathalie sat with me. I liked that. I like people.
Another time, a girl named Chelsea came to stay with me. She’s from Texas and was raised on a farm and she misses her dogs. She stayed with me. I liked her. I like people.
Yesterday, mom left me all by myself for 3 hours. I didn’t like that. But I was tired. So I slept. And when mom came back, she said she was worried that she might hear barking when she came down the hall.
Honestly, mom, get over it. I’m a big girl. I can handle it.
It’s been weird, trying to find a place to sleep. At home, I sleep on the loveseat in the living room. Here? Mom made me sleep on the floor next to the bed. I tried to make a nest from the yellow blanket that she brought from home. But I move around. This morning when mom got up she found me in the living room waiting for her to wake up so I could go take care of business, as they say.
Mom isn’t good in the mornings. She takes a long time to wake up. But I have to go outside right away! So she takes me. Today, she kept her flannel pajama top on and pulled on some jeans and we hurried over to the park. I had to pee!
This is where I station myself when mom is on that darned computer. I like being under things. When we first arrived here, mom sat on the couch so that I could go in my “tunnel” and feel safe. That helped.
I’m tired. Really tired. So is mom.
She says we’re going back home today. I’m not sure what I think of that. I miss my house but I sure love walking in the park. I will miss that. I mean, hey, it’s right across the street!
But I’m exhausted. Mom tells me she’s really proud of me and that I have been such a good girl! I even scored some extra treats because I’ve been so good.
I like having adventures. Life can get pretty boring otherwise. I may be 14 but I’m still young at heart. And I have lots and lots of energy. Frankly, I put mom to shame.
Mom is happy that last night’s preview performance went really well. The audience clapped and cheered. That’s good. (I know a lot about theater because mom and dad do that for a living.) She’s real proud of the actors and her friend who is the director. And she got to see some old friends – one who is the lighting designer and one who is the costume designer. She also got to make some new friends. But she’s ready to go home.
I hope you liked hearing about my adventure. Dad said that it was a special mother-daughter adventure – that his girls got to take a little trip together, just the two of them.
I miss my dad.
Mom’s worried that you guys are going to be sick of reading about me.
How could you be? I mean, it’s me.
Mom says to tell you that she’ll be back tonight at 8:00 for A Favorite Thing.
Whatever that is.
XOXO
Scout
Dear Scout,
I am so glad you enjoyed your adventure. Maybe Mom will take you more often. I know you will be glad to get home and see your dad. I really love my dad too!
Best regards Rusty
Ladybug Cottage
Rusty,
Dad doesn’t get home for another 5 weeks. He misses me, too. But I’ll be glad to get home.

Scout
Oh Scout….I’m so happy you got to have this adventure with your mom. What an exciting time for you both :) Have a safe trip home!!
Lori
Thank you, Lori!

Scout
You are darling Scout!
I AM pretty darn cute!

Dear Scout, isn’t it great to go on a vacation adventure? On Christmas day I spent four days with my cousins at their house while my mom and dad went to Florida to see my other cousin. I have never been away from them but I really enjoyed bonding with my cousin Emma, who always used to yell at me before and I would have to tell her who’s the big girl. It’s nice to get away, but also nice to be home!
Claudia — I read A Wanted Man (after reading your review), my first time with Jack Reacher, and have requested the whole series from the library! I can’t wait to see which book comes in first (they’re all on waiting lists)! Thanks so much for your faithful reviews! I agree that to see the movie with Tom Cruise would be disillusioning!
Oops — Miss Bella forgot to sign her name to her message to Scout….after all, she’s only three!
Bella,
It has been fun, but I think I’m ready to go home.
Mom says that she’s glad Jack Reacher has a new fan!

Scout
Hey Scout, guess what I got in the mail? A big postcard of a show your Dad is in at the Old Globe Theatre! His picture is on it and everything! I’ve never met your Dad but I feel like I have through you and your Mom :) Sounds like you had a great adventure but I bet you’ll be so happy to be back home again!
Wow, Maria, mom says she hasn’t seen ANY pictures of Dad in this production. She is going to have to talk to him about it. I wish I could see my dad in this play. Mom does, too. I hope you get to see him!
xo
Scout
I think it’s a headshot, along with the other cast members :)
Oh. I’ve seen lots of Dad’s headshots. He’s always getting headshots.
xo
Scout
Well, Scout, since you’ve seen lots of his headshots and you’ve undoubtedly been around other extremely accomplished people, could your full name possibly be…Talent Scout? Cross your paws and hope your Mom and I (and lots of others)can see your Dad’s show!
How Absolutely CHARMING!!! you are! -Judy-
Why, thank you, Judy!
xoxo
Scout
Oh Scout, you sweet little adventurer, I’m so glad you had a blast in Hartford!
I did! I did!

We love you Scout! Bess
I love you, too, Bess!!

Hi Scoutie, I enjoyed hearing about your trip. That park sounds really neat. I have two granddogs that we get to watch when their mom goes out of town on business. Their mom and my son are divorced but we are so lucky to have everyone still in our lives. Anyway, they are coming tomorrow and spending the night. Tessa and Thai sleep on the couch or their beds which are in the kitchen. They like the kitchen because that is where I am most of the day. I am a kitchen sitter. But at night they sleep on the bed with me. We have a big yard which they love, love, love and they have doggie friends that chat with them when they are over. They go on walks with granddad on the greenbelt out back. If you lived near, you could come here when your folks are out of town and we would have a dog party!
I would love to have a dog party! This morning there were lots of dogs in the park – they apparently meet every morning at 7:00 and run around together. Mom wouldn’t let me join in because I didn’t know them. But it sure looked like fun. I used to do that very thing at the Dog Park in San Diego.
xo
Scout
Oooh, Scout, never tire of hearing about your adventures. I’m glad you had a good adventure. Adventures are fun ya know, pup. I understand wanting to pee and being in a strange place though. I like my bed more than my hubby…well, almost.
Doggie kisses,
Connie
I miss my sofa, Connie. It’s my favorite place.
xo
Scout
Great post Scout! You may score even more treats if you make your guest-posting a regular gig. Have a great trip back home today… I’m sure your sofa missed you. :)
I don’t know what mom will say about a regular gig. I’ll have to ask her.
xo
Scout
So proud of you Scout…sounds like your Mom is proud of you too! Guess she made the right decision to take you along on an adventure. Matter of fact, I’ll bet now you’d like to have an adventure with your Mom and Dad! I’ll let her know….;)
I’m always up for adventures, Donnamae!
xo
Scout
Oh Scout – What a special adventure you and your Mom went on. Maybe she can find you a park closer to home – probably not across the street, but nearby. I am so proud of you that you have been such a good girl. I’m glad you made some new friends. I’m sure you and Mom will be glad to get back home, even if you don’t have a park or a box to ride up and down in.
Good girl!!
Tell Mom hello for me.
Judy
We just got home Judy. I drank tons of water and I did one of my ‘pounces’ because I was so happy. Mom says hello to you, too.
xo
Scout
Dearest Scout, I am so happy that you had such a wonderful mom and daughter adventure. I know it was fun, but there is nothing better than getting back to your own home. Tell mom to drive safe.
Hugs,
Laura
Mom drove safe. She’s pretty careful. We are home now and I am very happy. I’m going to sleep now.
xo
Scout
How wonderful that Scout’s adventure has turned out so well. Even if you did have to go out in the cold morning. Hope you have a good trip back home.
Lucia
We are home, Lucia. I am very happy and very tired.
xo
Scout
Oh, how I loved reading about your adventure! I’m so happy you had a wonderful time. I miss my doggies so much! I’m thinking I should go look for a new little fur-friend.
Kim
Everyone should have a dog in the house. I think you should go find one, Kim.
xo
Scout
Scout, I so enjoy the stories your mom tells about you. It was fun to hear about your experience in Boston from your perspective. You are one special girl.
Even though I don’t comment often, I visit every day to catch up on your family adventures.
Thank you, Denise. I am special. I am.

Scout
I could never tire of hearing about your adventures! I am so happy that you had such a good time. I think you are great and I love you.

I love you too, Jane.

Scout
Scout, I’m so glad you and your mom are having such a great adventure. Please tell your mom we all enjoy hearing about you. Safe trip home.
I told her, Kathy. Thanks for saying that because that means I might get to write another post!!
xo
Scout
Dear Scout,
Sick of hearing about you? Never! Thank you for sharing your adventures.
Glad you like the park. I like parks too. I like making new friends there, just like you do although I prefer to shake hands instead of sniff bottoms. People are strange that way.
You and Mommy have a safe trip home.
Love,
Cassandra from Renaissance Women
Why do humans want to shake hands? What can you tell about someone from shaking hands?? Sniffing is so much better!
xo
Scout
Oh Scout, I so enjoy your adventures. You have such a delightful way of writing. Please tell your Mom that I
don’t get tired of your dairies.
Oops, huge spelling error, meant diaries Scout not dairies. Sorry.
I told her, Lea. Lots of you are saying that and that’s good for me because then I get my picture on the blog and I can maybe write another post!
xo
Scout
Cute! You and your Mom both are! I’m a special senior canine, too, and your story sounds so much like mine. I’m not nearly as cute as you, though. But my mom loves me, and that’s what counts. Woof to you.
Woof right back at ya!
xo
Scout
Dear Scout,
We all know what a special girl you are and I ‘m so glad you told us about your adventure. Don’t tell her said so, but your Mom was a wee bit nervous about this trip. Sounds like you had fun in the park and with those sweet girls who visited with you. Yes, trips are exhausting and it’s always good to get home. Proud of you Scout!
hugs,
Miss Linda
Mom always worries about me. She worries too much. Thanks for being proud of me, Miss Linda!
xo
Scout
I knew you could do it Scout! Take it easy and if your a good doggie, maybe mom will take you again.
bunny
You think so??? I’d like that!
xo
Scout
Scout-I’m glad you had such a fun adventure and you were such a good girl. I’m sure you’ll be happy to be in your own home-I know your Mom will be glad.
Cute post!
I was a very good girl and Mommy told me so a LOT!!! We’re home now and I’m going to sack out for a while.

Hi Scout
You are a talented writer. I enjoyed every single word. Safe trip home! Regula
Thank you, Regula. Maybe my mom (who thinks SHE’S the writer) will let me write a post again!
xo
Scout
Scout!!! What a great post!!! You did such a good job!!! I think your mommy should try her hand at writing childrens books!!! You can help her!!! I hope you have a safe trip home!!!
MJ
Maybe she could write a series about my adventures! Or better yet, maybe I could write it!
xo
Scout
Okay, Claudia. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you have to let Scout post more often. She is HILARIOUS!!! Okay, I know it’s really you talking, but Scout, just so you know, we will n-e-v-e-r get sick of hearing about you or from you! Maybe there’s a park near your home that you can go to on occasion!
Scratches behind the year from Donna
I’m so glad you like to hear about me, Donna. Thank you for the pretty picture of my brother Riley and me that you sent to us. I look at it every day. You are very nice and I know (Mommy told me) that you love dogs, too. And cats, but we won’t talk about that.
xo
Scout
Such a sweet girl. Glad you’re headed home so both you and mom can sleep in your own beds.
I’m already about to fall asleep on the sofa in the den, Jenny. Ahhh. Home is good!
xo
Scout
I’m so glad you were your sweet self during this trip, Scout! You made Mom very relieved and happy and I bet you will be included in many more trips!
I didn’t know your Daddy was going to be gone so long…your Mom is a trooper!
XO,
Jane
My mom misses Daddy a lot. So do I. And Daddy wrote a note to Mommy today that said how much he missed his girls (I’m the other girl!)
xo
Scout
Scout, you are a fabulous writer and I loved to hear the stories of your adventures! I’m sure both you and your mom will be happy to be home though! Have a good weekend Scoutie!
Thank you, Deb. I like writing. I think I will do more of it. Maybe I can publish a book and become a famous writer!
xo
Scout
Scout, we are so glad you got to go with your mom on an adventure. Sometimes our mommy takes us to Louisiana to see our big sister, and we love it. The food down there is sooo good! Did you have special food in Hartford? We never would get tired of hearing about you. Our mommy was so worried about you when you were sick! Your dad will be home before too long, maybe you and your mom can just use this time for special bonding time for the two of you and then when he gets home, you will all be so happy! If you get to have another adventure, or if you get bored, write all about it for us.
Love and sloppy kisses,
Marvin, Sunshine, Tori and MacGregor
Hi, Marvin, Sunshine, Tori and MacGregor!!!
I liked being with my mommy on this adventure. I didn’t like being at the animal hospital while she was gone the last time. This was MUCH better!! Mom says she could have saved some money by taking me with her the first time and that she’s learned her lesson! But really, I know that Mom worries about me and wouldn’t let that happen to me again. She said ‘Never again!’
Sloppy kisses and love to you, too.
Scout
LOL Scout! YOU write almost as good as MOM ! Lily ( who sorta looks like you only she’s a furrier fatter version who needs brushed really bad right now ) says HI and she also says that I am to post a picture of her for you to sniff tomorrow on My Favorite Thing !
Oh goodie! A picture to sniff! Hurrah!
xo
Scout
What a fun post! Obviously Scout has picked up excellent communication skills from Mom and Dad :)
I would say that my mom and dad picked up their communication skills from ME!
xo
Scout
Scout, I’m so glad you had a good trip. We people worry about our older dogs and what they might think about change, but it sounds like you were great company for your Mom. Here’s to more happy adventures!
I had a great time with my mom and she says she did with me, too. Mom tends to worry about me. I know it’s cause she loves me. But I’m ready for anything!!
xo
Scout
Oh Scout, I’m so happy to hear that you had a great adventure! It’s wonderful that you were able to be with your mom.
It was an excellent adventure!

Scout
So glad you are home safely! What a great adventure. PLEASE don’t tell your mom, but we know she was a little nervous taking you but you were SUCH a good girl! She told us! ALSO, you have picked up some amazing writing skills! I think you need to write a book about all your adventures…it would be a best seller~!
I know all of us who come to visit can never hear enough “Scoutie stories”!!
You and mom take a nice pre=bedtime nap and enjoy being home.
We are sitting on the couch together right now, Mare. Well, I’m lying down, but Mom is right next to me. She’s in her flannel pajamas, of course. I like writing these things called ‘posts.’
xo
Scout
The best thing about a trip is coming home, so welcome home, Scout. You were a brave girl and I know you made Mom happy just to be with her and be such a trooper!
I am a trooper! I loved being with Mommy!

What a most precious post sweet friend!!! Your sweet girl must have loved being there with you Claudia…but I’m sure you both will love being back home too ~ Big, big hugs to you Scout, you are such sweetheart for keeping mama company and being so good!!!! hugs and love, Dawn
Hi Scoutie,
We are Leo and Hershey (Pom’s) and your post was read to us. How exciting! You got to go on an adventure! The only places we have been lately are in the car to the VET! and our walks. We don’t have a park, but there is a thing called an open field and we get to run there. Seraphena (the cat) always has to stay home and she is so jealous of you. Have a safe trip home and maybe your Dad will be there soon.
Dear Scout,
I liked hearing about your adventures. You did great on your trip! When my Mom, Dad, and the funny boy take me away on adventures, it makes me nervous. I’m afraid they will leave me somewhere in a cage like my last family did. I didn’t like that at all. I like to ride in the car and I like to go the park too. But I like it best at home.
Your follower,
Shadow
I never would get tired of hering abou Scout or any dog. I love dogs and dog stories and am glad you share Scout with us.
Scout, I think your mom was just pulling your leg when she said we might get tired of hearing about you. NEVER. EVER.
You all have a safe trip home and be sure and make her stop forty-leven times to let you out, just like I make Mr. Magpie do when we go on a trip. ;-)
Love to you girls…
XO,
Sheila
Oh, and to dad in California… xoxox
I’m glad the adventure was a success. But how are you going to keep that girl on the farm, after she’s seen Paree???
