A Necco Snow Globe

December 12, 2011 at 7:00 am by Claudia

You all know about my recent find: the vintage Necco candy jar with its Art Deco styling.

Suzan suggested that I turn it on its side and create a Christmas scene inside. I couldn’t get that idea out of my head, so I trotted off to the store to get some Epsom salts for that snowy look. No Epsom salts. But they did have kosher salt. Perfect.

I used some bottle brush trees, a couple of smallish pine cones, and one of my Putz houses.

The view from above.

I really love it. I didn’t tell Don about it, just waited to see if he noticed it. I was upstairs sewing in the studio when I heard, “Brilliant!” Smile. I quickly told him, however, that it was someone else’s idea. That’s one of the fabulous perks of blogland – it’s a wonderland of ideas shared by generous fellow bloggers.

I’ve seen a variety of snow globes all over blogland; sometimes in a small jar or under a cloche – you could create one quite easily. I had everything on hand except for the kosher salt which was about $1.50. Kosher salt is great because it’s coarse and looks glittery and snow-like.

I may have to make another one. Maybe you could make a snow globe today!

Don’t forget – tomorrow is a special edition of Defending the Small House. The theme is Christmas Decorating in a Small House and we are inviting you to join in via a linky party. I’ll have the links up and ready just after midnight – east coast time. Join us!

Great find Claudia! Love what you’ve created with it! I’m sure you will find lots of uses for it over the years. I saw a vintage Necco jar like yours on a website called Ruby Lane. They were asking $100 for it. Not sure what the going price for something like this is. I remember necco candy. Used to eat quite a bit of those in the old days!

I too use kosher salt for snow and/or some Epson salts.

How cute is that? I’m going to be on the lookout for a cute jar to implement this great tip next year. Everything’s all finished for this year, here at the cottage. I’m so far behind I can’t figure out what to do next. It happens every year, but for some reason, this year is the worst.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
