A ‘New’ Cake Topper

August 14, 2011 at 4:42 pm by Claudia

Prescription for myself: a little trip to the antique store. Could I find something for only a few dollars that I really liked? And when I say ‘only a few dollars’ I mean just that. Well – I did. I found this cake topper from the 1950’s.

It’s a little over the top, with daisies all around the base and also on the top, fancy arches framing the bride and groom, a yellowing bell hanging over the happy couple. When I first brought it home, I noticed that there was a lace skirt on the bride. It was also wrapped around the groom.

It may be hard to see but the skirt was around the waist of the bride and the groom. That didn’t seem right. I tried to pull it over the groom’s head but that didn’t work. I ended up cutting it off. Unfortunately I took the little tulle veil off too. That will be glued back on the bride’s head.

I think she looks better without the lace. Her dress is quite elegant.

My apologies to the Bride. Your veil is soon to be back on your head.

This is a tall cake topper, much taller than the others I have. Some creative shelf rearranging was required.

I really like it. And I almost put it back on the shelf at the shop; in fact, I did put it back. Fortunately, I came to my senses.

I think it might be time to name each bride and groom.

HOW LOVELY CLAUDIA. YOUR COLLECTION IS SO PRETTY. GIVING THEM NAMES WOULD BE AWESOME…….I HAD A PAIR OF WHITE DOVE’S WITH PRETTY WHITE FLOWERS , BUT THROUGH THE YEARS, AND MOVING IT DIDN’T HOLD UP VERY WELL.
I REMEMBER I PACKED IT AWAY, AND WHEN I FOUND IT IT WAS MELTED FROM THE HEAT IN THE ATTIC, AND VERY YELLOW. I FELT BAD, BUT I COULD NOT FIX IT.
TAKE CARE, HAVE A GREAT WEEK. RIZZI

That is a really unique collection! Looking at yours, it suddenly ocurred to me that I don’t know where my cake topper is. I didn’t have a fancy wedding or a fancy wedding cake. But I still had a little plastic Bride and Groom. I guess it is packed away with other memories. Hope you are having a restful weekend…it is drizzly here in Ohio….cooler temps.~Hugs, Patti

I have been collecting cake toppers for over 20 years. I owned a franchise where I rented tuxedos. One day to escape I visited the antique mall down the street and found a bride and groom about 3″ tall. From there I have purchased them in antique shops and on eBay. I have about 70 now, and rarely find one that’s different. I also have quite a collection of bride and groom salt and pepper shakers, also some “before and after” shakers.

What a lovely collection you have, Claudia! I hope you do name them and share their names with us! Now my curiosity is piqued, so please do it! It will be fun! I find that shopping is a good morale booster even if it’s just at the dollar store. I find those stores such fun to browse in! Now I feel like browsing but I’ll have to wait until tomorrow because the stores are closed! LOL! In the meantime, I’ll go wash my dishes.

The lace must have been added – it was a different color/pattern than the arch lace. Nice collection. A pick me up.

What a fun collection. I was reading on Craig’s list for our area and someone had listed a bunch of vintage wedding cake toppers last month. So they can be found everywhere.

I have my parents’ cake topper, that I used for our wedding, and it is similar to this one. It even had the lace skirt on the bride when my mom used it. I wonder if that was just the thing to do back then? Such a fun collection, Claudia!

    Hi Claudia!

At one of the antique shops I go to, they have tiny bridesmaids and groomsmen to go with the bride and groom!!

I thought of you yesterday when I went into the one shop as the owner was talking to someone about acquiring McCoy pottery :)

I hope you have a wonderful week!

I love them! I think you are right-the lace did not look right around them both and the bride’s dress is better showcased without it. I like your display- the tallness of your newest find draws your eye from the front to the back perfectly :)

Hello! I have been following your blog, I like him very much. I read that his mother was not well, and then no more news. She is best? I hope so. Beautiful top of the cake that you bought. I also like these things. I am far from you, I live in Brazil. Sorry to intrude in your life but I noticed that you were very sad.

This is such a sweet addition to your collection! I love how the bell hangs over the couples heads in the lacy arched framework. And the daisies too, of course.
