After doing my research like a good girl and responsible consumer, I headed over to Best Buy on Wednesday. I had narrowed down my choices to either Samsung or Sony Bravia. The prices were comparable. After looking at them and sending pictures to Don, I spoke to the salesman and asked which one he would recommend. (I kept quiet about the one I thought had the better picture.) Sure enough, he recommended the Sony, which to me, had a significantly better picture. So, that’s what I bought. (Both were Smart TVs, which means, for us, that we can get Netflix on a big screen.)
Ain’t she purty? Our older flat screen, gosh it must have been about 8 years old, was so much heavier, so heavy that I have to wait for Don to get back home before I can move it out of the den. This set is almost too lightweight. It’s also a 40″ screen; the old one was 32″.
I figured out how to connect all the cables and wires and managed to get through all the prompts on the screen and….voilà! By the time the World Series started, I was nestled into the sofa texting Don about how great the picture was. (Not happy about the results of the World Series. Not happy at all.)
That cabinet is one I bought at auction for $5.00. It was the perfect size for our den, I brought it home and cleaned it up, repainted and ‘aged’ it, added some glass knobs and now it holds this stuff:
Including a VCR that we never use anymore. Perhaps I should remove it someday. And yes, you see cords on the right. Ultimately, I don’t care about that sort of thing. It’s life. We live (and often work) here. If you live in the 21st century, cords are going to be everywhere, and trying to deny their existence is silly – at least to me. It’s the kind of thing I just don’t have the energy to care about.
Okay. I went off onto a slight tangent there.
Speaking of tech and cords, the new B&H Photo Video catalog arrived yesterday. It weighs a ton. B&H is an incredible store in Manhattan that I’ve written about before. It’s where I buy my cameras and probably where I would buy my television if I lived in the city. Since I’ve purchased items there, they send me this mammoth catalog every year. And just for a moment, I pretend I’m a professional photographer, since they seem to think I am. It’s really fun to look through.
Changing subjects: Teresa, a loyal reader of this blog, sent me a package. I picked it up from the post office box on Monday. Let’s see what was inside.
Oh my! Three packets of Emergen-C – always needed in this household (I wish I could send some to Don right now), some Sweet and Spicy herbal tea (there were two bags, but I’ve already had a cup – delicious), a lovely note, and this egg cup which has stolen my heart.
Look at that adorable face!
It’s on the tall side and I’m totally smitten. I also think it was hand painted.
In 1958. Thank you, LH. You did a great job.
And thank you, sweet Teresa, for this lovely gift. Another egg cup that has a wonderful story. You know how much I love that. Every decorative item in a house should have a story and not a story about how a decorator found it. It should be a story of love and friends and things longed for, discovered, saved for, collected over time, received as presents from caring friends, of books well-read and thumbed through, of the lovingly well-worn, of things that bring one joy.
And on and on I could go.
It got cold last night. The leaves are falling from the catalpa, a sure sign that the temps were freezing overnight. Time to bring the impatiens in for the winter. Say it ain’t so!
New post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page.
Happy Friday.

Claudia, You are going to love the TV. When I think about how heavy old TV were, crazy . Love your gift. Hope you and your loved ones have a great weekend. It’s going to be more like winter here. xoxo,Susie
Claudia says
The TV in our bedroom is about 18 years old and weighs a ton! But it still works, so we’ll keep using it!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Glad you got the TV working for the World Series (sorry it turned out like it did). The new TV’s are so lightweight, I also can move mine alone!! Love it. What a sweet egg cup and even better as a gift from a reader! I love blogging! I got my B&H catalog also…amazing isn’t it. Hope you have a good day, it’s suppose to get cold here this weekend (well cold for GA).
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
That catalog is a treasure trove! Very cold here this weekend, Linda. Too cold!
Dawn says
What a darling new egg cup, and so glad you managed programing the TV on your own. That’s a huge accomplishment. I normally get my kids to do all that. LOL
Claudia says
It’s me or nobody, Dawn. I’m better at that kind of thing than Don is. He admits it!
Sylvia says
You bought the same TV I have. I’m almost embarrassed to say how much I love that TV – the picture is so amazing!
What a sweet egg cup – lovely details on the wing. Off to make an egg for breakfast!
Claudia says
Isn’t that picture incredible? I love it!
Dottie in Missouri says
I drink the same brand of tea – Good Earth. Have for years. I am so impressed with your TV hook up skills!
Claudia says
I’m pretty good at that sort of thing, Dottie.
Melanie says
We have a big flat screen in our family room downstairs, but we rarely watch it. As you know, I’m not a TV watcher. And when Brian wants to watch some TV, he does so on the tiny TV in our bedroom. B&H…great company. We ordered one of our TVs from them as well as camera equipment for Tim, etc. Love that darling egg cup!
Claudia says
It’s such a lovely egg cup, Melanie. I’ve never seen one quite like it.
Vera says
What a wonderful egg cup — love it! I had to use the scrapper on my windshield and windows this a.m. — NOT fun! Tomorrow is supposed to be even colder
Claudia says
A pox on this cold weather, Vera!
LuvWheaties says
I have a Sony Bravia, too. Excellent choice!
Claudia says
I’m glad to hear some of my readers have this one – it confirms I made the right choice!
Linda @ Itsy Bits And Pieces says
The TV looks great on your old cabinet! You are going to love it! That was very sweet of Teresa to send you the goodies…the egg cup is charming!
Claudia says
It was very thoughtful of Teresa – such a nice surprise!
Sally says
We love love love Sony TV’s too! We had to get a Sharp the last time for our den TV because Sony no longer made a size that would fit in our armoire. Either way too small or just outside the size of our space. Drat drat drat Sony! The one in my craft room is 21 years old (and so chunky!) and still chugging along.
Adore your egg cup! What a wonderful friend and sweetest of gifts.
Happy Halloweenie!
Claudia says
The TV (Sharp) in our bedroom is about 18 years old!
Sue says
Lovely Claudia just in time to watch some scary movies tonight. Pretty egg cup such thoughtful bloggers.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN

I am so lucky to have such lovely readers/friends.
Chris k in Wisconsin says
You will so love that TV. Being able to run Netflix through it will be wonderful! And that egg cup!!! Oh, so cute!!
I struggle with cords everywhere and I am trying my best to stop fretting about them. They certainly are a necessity.
It is SO cold here today, and we woke up to a dusting of that awful white stuff. Yuk. The winds are about 35 mph. I’m afraid some of those tiny Trick or Treaters may blow away this afternoon! Happy Halloween!!
Claudia says
It’s really cold here, too. At 8:30 this morning it was still 31 degrees outside!
Donnamae says
Lovely egg cup…lucky lady! Sounds like you did a thorough investigative search (I’m certain something in that is redundant) for your new tv…and the fact that it’s smart…great! We had snow here this morning…just a dusting, but it counts in my book! As far as cords go….if they are offensive to me….I cover them with a plant! Happy Halloween! ;)
Claudia says
Good idea, Donnamae!
Trudy Mintun says
Emergen-C is a staple in my house. Just like Ginger Ale. The Emergen-C is always welcome at the first sign of a cold, but I have found too that if I am working hard, sweating (I don’t perspire),
and forget to drink enough liquids the Emergen-C keeps me from dehydrating.
I love the egg cup. I keep looking for them when I am out and about.
Claudia says
Don’s been using it in New Haven and I used it when I was sick. I just may have some this afternoon, Trudy.
Janet in Rochester says
Your new TV is indeed purty! And great news that it’s lighter. My sister, who always buys things the moment they appear, has a flatscreen even older than your old one that WEIGHS A TON. If your new one is already much lighter, that means that by the time I get one I’ll probably be able to pick it up with one hand! My college roommate had one of the first VCRs ever in 1979 and it was massive. The top measured larger than the average coffee table! I didn’t get one until 1995 and by then, they’d shrunk enough to fit in a laptop case. So I guess there ARE benefits to not buying something the moment it appears on the market. Hope you feel better soon, both you and Don, and have a happy Halloween!
Claudia says
Oh, I’m feeling fine. It’s Don that’s really sick. He has the same kind of crap I did and he feels miserable.
Nancy Blue Moon says
Nice choice Claudia..our TV is a 40″ also..That egg cup is adorable and I love trying new flavors of tea..How sweet of you Teresa! I take it that Don’s cold is still hanging on..yuck..You know I told you about staying at the hospital for a sleep study?..Well I have to stay again on Tuesday night..I got the results yesterday and the study showed that I have severe sleep apnea..I guess I will be using a CPAP machine at night but maybe I won’t be so tired and sleepy all day anymore..Have a nice day..it is cold here..
Claudia says
Such a difference between 32″ and 40″ – I watched Masterpiece Mystery on PBS last night and it looked fabulous!!
So sorry to hear about the sleep apnea, but if using the machine brings some relief, that will be so good for you.
Mary says
Hope Don is better – and comes home – soon!
Such an adorable egg cup.
Enjoy the shows on the big screen – we recently got a new one a little larger than our old Sony which developed bars running up and down and hummed loudly (but it was several years old and nothing lasts forever anymore). Can’t go bigger from hereon as it has to fit into the cabinet built under the bookcases. We rarely watch TV – mostly British TV series on Netflix. Our current spine tingler is LUTHER – have you watched it?
Hope Scout is still doing well and glad you are better.
Things have been a bit rough for me – I guess adding yet another year means I’m really having to face some demons!
Halloween treats to you my dear friend.
Hugs – Mary
Claudia says
Darling Mary, I am so sorry to hear things have been rough with you. I’m going to message you privately about that. I hope healing is just around the corner for you.
I’ve been watching Luther this week – it’s great!
Barbara W. says
Our cable provider changed things about on us a few years ago which necessitated our buying a new television. We chose a relatively small Sony (we didn’t want the focal point of our loft-style condo to be the tv) and we ‘ve been very happy with it. Have you been watching ‘Death Comes to Pemberley’ on PBS? I’m not a fan of mystery novels (I can just hear the collective gasp!), but I may yet try some P.D. James. We rented a farmhouse in Derbyshire for our summer holidays a few years ago and of course did the obligatory tour of Chatsworth. I always find it fascinating to later watch a period film/tv series filmed on a location that you traipsed about in your anorak and jeans.
Claudia says
I am a big P.D. James fan, so I’m holding off on watching the PBS series until I read the book. James writes beautifully and the assistant to the director of Hamlet raved about it. So it’s on my ever-growing list of books to read!
Deb says
Love that TV Claudia! Unfortunately on its first night, it had to project a Royals loss :( To have a man on third in the bottom of the ninth with two outs with the score 3-2 in the 7th game of the World Series, with the batter up being the only one that had hit a homerun off Bumgartner during the series……all I can say is wow. So close, yet so far. Ahh, maybe next year….can’t wait already. Maybe we can get the Royals and the Red Sox in the ALCS! But must say, so proud of this Royals team, the city and the fans. It was so cool to see this city come together and celebrate.
Claudia says
Gosh darn it! I so wanted the Royals to win. If it’s any comfort, Don and I said that the ONLY way the Giants could win was to use Bumgarner. He’s amazing, yes, but one pitcher does not a team make. I’ll miss watching the Royals – Kansas City should be very proud of that team!
Deb says
So awesome to have a fellow female baseball fan out there who really KNOWS baseball. There’s bandwagon fans – and then there’s REAL fans like you. And, it’s a great “hobby” that we can share with our hubbies. I’ve even considered starting a blog for women about baseball …. we’ll see!
Claudia says
Go for it, Deb! I’d definitely be a loyal reader!
Dyanna says
Claudia, keep checking the price of your new tv at Best Buy for the next 30 days. If it’s lower than what you paid, you take your receipt in and they give you the difference. I bought my last tv there and then went back about two weeks later and got $500 back! It’s a wonderful policy that they have.
