O Christmas Tree…You are Hard to Photograph

December 15, 2009 at 8:29 am by Claudia

Boy, I am not a professional photographer – that’s for sure! I remember having the same trouble last year. I just can’t get a photo that truly reflects the way the tree looks. These are pretty good, but the colors are more vivid, the lights are more sparkly – you know what I mean. I took these last night as I tweaked the tree’s final look. Pardon the television – our tree is in the den, and our house is tiny. The lights around the window were my husband’s solution as to what to do with the end of the final string of lights.

Here it is in daylight. After gathering vintage ornaments for several years, we’ve reached the point where 95% of the ornaments are vintage and the rest are ornaments that were given to us as presents or are from my younger days. I hadn’t realized how I had unconsciously created my favorite palette of pink and aqua until I looked at finished tree. And the clear lights really add brilliance to the ornaments. We love it.

I tried this one with the tripod – which was one of the recommendations I read during a google search. Unfortunately, I don’t know enough yet about f stops and shutter speed to do anything more with these!

This is the ornament that is always put on the tree by both of us. It is our Winston ornament. Winston was our first dog. He left us too soon, at only eight years old, not that many years after we moved out East. We miss him everyday.

I hope you enjoyed the tour of the tree!

I DubYa TreePictureTaker of the Year! Great pics of your tree and ornaments. I love a real tree and the smell of Christmas that it brings! Unfortunately, real trees don’t like me…last one I had gave me puffy eyes and sneezy nose by the time I had it decorated! Merry Christmas, Claudia!

    Hi Claudia:
Your tree is lovely and so very festive. I’m sure you can guess which are my favorite ornaments…of course, the acorns and the dog!

lol Yes, I know what you mean! I tried all the settings on my camera last night trying to get a nice evening picture of our tree. It was a disaster.

I think your pictures are beautiful, as is your tree.

Claudia, your tree is beautiful! I love all of your vintage ornaments. But I especially love the one of Winston. It makes me cry because I love my dogs so much and cant stand the thought of losing them. I love that you have an ornament of him. Just so sweet!!

I understand exactly what you mean about photographing the tree as I experienced the exact same thing this past week, honey. It was very stressful trying to capture the true beauty of it. But you certainly did a tremendous job—both with the tree and the photographs. Much better than I did. It is lovely, chick!

I think your tree looks great! Good pics! I just did squeeze the tv out of my pics! hehe It is hard to get it good with the lights on. But you cannot get the whole effect if you don’t have them on. Your ornaments are wonderful. I love your tree is big enough for the large stars and snowflakes! That is really great!
Your Winston ornament is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

I love all your vintage ornaments and I see you got your new bottlebrush ornaments on there too. It all looks splendid!

Thanks for sharing and enjoy your tree!

Oh, Claudia, your tree is spectacular! Well now I’m longing to have a real tree again after seeing yours (I think this is year 3 with our artificial tree)..

Your Winston ornament is my absolute favorite. How very special, and what wonderful memories are represented by it.

The pinks and aquas are gorgeous together. Isn’t it funny how we end up making ‘collections’ of colors or things without even realizing, until much later, that we’ve done so?

And I do love the big vintage-styled ornaments you posted about the other day from your friend’s shop – they look wonderful mixed in with all the real vintage!

Now it’s time to sit back at night with just the tree lights on and enjoy!… Donna

    It looks beautiful Claudia.

I used to love mt tree at home that was full of ornaments I’d collected over the years.

I don’t have a tree or any ornaments here…too busy this year but even next year it just won’t feel the same starting with all new ornaments :-(

Your Christmas tree is so cute and I agree that they are hard to photograph. I had the same trouble with mine. Your pics turned out great, though. You can see the lights and the ornaments, which is tricky. I just love your style. Fun, fun, fun.

OK, you win! You guessed the city – and we’re off with our ‘traveling granddaughter’ on Fri. Big Apple dressed for Christmas, maybe some snowflakes, lights galore – what more do I need to get into the spirit……comfy footwear and a lot of warm scarves for sure!

I love your tree! I think vintage ornaments just bring so much spirit to a tree . . . I always wonder what other Christmases they’ve seen . . . who the people were, how they celebrated, what the gifts were and I like to think all that energy is stored in that ornament. I also love the giant stars and snowflakes!

Loved my visit to your blog and had to agree with a big “you are so right” about the difficulty of capturing the beauty of Christmas trees. In fact, my last post was on this very subject.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
