On Sunday

January 14, 2018 at 10:13 am by Claudia

Good morning. I’m moving slowly because I slept in. It seems that the older I get, the more a change in my normal routine seems to throw me ever-so-slightly off for the rest of the day. Grateful to have caught up on some sleep, of course, but I’m just a wee bit behind.

It’s turned very cold again here and will be for the next 3 days or so.

But it’s sunny! Yesterday’s dire predictions for ice and a wintry mix changed around noon and the sun came out. Immediately, my mood lifted. The sun makes an enormous difference, especially when you feel a bit housebound.

I just noticed how tall the new growth on this ZZ plant has become. Goodness! I love these hardy houseplants – any plant that survives in the shadows of the den is a winner in my book. I’m going to buy one more for my office.

A closer look at the top of the new shoot. I love the glossy, thick leaves.

We watched The Darkest Hour  last night. It’s the story of a few weeks in 1940 when Winston Churchill became Prime Minister. Riveting. Gary Oldman is brilliant as Churchill. I learned a lot, as there was much I didn’t know about that particular time and its challenges for Churchill and Great Britain. I recommend it highly.

In a rare instance for us, we watched about 20 minutes of Mudbound  before we turned to each other and said, “Let’s stop.” There were too many directorial ‘devices’ and screenplay problems that didn’t work and were annoying. Every time yet another character became a narrator, we groaned. So we moved on. I’m sure some of you have seen it and liked it and that’s great. And I’m sure there’s solid acting. But we weren’t in the mood to put up with the rest of it to get there. It just wasn’t our cup of tea.

So far, our favorites are The Shape of Water, The Darkest Hour,  and Get Out; each of them completely different, but all of them brilliant and inspired.

Oh! Forgot to add –  we enjoyed I, Tonya, as well. It’s darkly funny and very well done by all. Allison Janney is wonderful.

Today? I might get out there and do something, but only if we can get rid of the ice surrounding my car. The warm weather melted a lot of snow and ice and then the sudden very cold weather promptly froze it all.

Happy Sunday.

Your plants lift my spirits too Claudia. We’re in the midst of another cold snap here in Florida but it’s nothing like in your area. I hope you get to get out today. Stay warm!

Sun is shining here, too! It is super cold still and tonight it will start snowing again. Hopefully that darn wind doesn’t start again!
That Z plant is gorgeous! Wow, do they always grow like that?
I have been re-watching Law and Order: SVU. Last night Don was the door man on an episode! I love spotting him in things!
    Have a nice day!

I will not waste time watching a movie I’m not enjoying either. Too many things that are good to waste time. I’m like that with books now also. Move on. My houseplants are doing OK but not as lovely as some you have. I wish I had more places with good light for them. I’ll play with a little watercolor today and just try to have a bit of fun with it. Stay warm.

Yes. Why torture yourself just to say you saw or read the whole thing?

Try the ZZ plant, Linda. You can get them at Lowes or Home Depot. They don’t need a lot of light.

I think I will try the ZZ plant next time I get to Lowe’s or Home Depot to look for it. It has such pretty leaves!

Hope you get that outing, Claudia. I dislike being housebound. We’re taking down the outside holiday lights and then head over to keep the cat company. Tomorrow, we’ll drive to my daughter’s college to deliver a couple of things she asked for. She takes off for Hilo Thursday and will spend 2-1/2 weeks on the Big Island studying Hawaiian culture with her classmates and a couple of professors. How nice! I’m still fighting this virus. I feel better this morning, a lot better than the previous week and a half. What a way to start the new year….

I am happy to hear that we are not the only ones that will cut off a movie or tv show as soon as we realize it’s not for us. Years ago we watched Open Water all the way thru thinking it would have to get better…….it did not.
Here in the Shenandoah Valley it’s COLD again also,

So glad to hear your good report for
I, Tonya. Others have made very favorable comments as well but, you
and Don are actively involved in the
world of acting, directing, etc and know
when a movie is well done.

It’s quite enjoyable and as someone (like most of us) who remembers that incident well, the back story about her mother and husband is very interesting.

ice … ugh. hope it’s not a hassle for you, that the sun helps your efforts to get rid of the ice and any “cabin fever” you may have.

takes me longer to bounce back from things, too … a cold, a change in my routine … oh, well. we do what we can, right?

more beautiful plants! i have nine here … about the limit given the space and my lack of a green thumb … but i love what plants add to a space.

    happy sunday!

I got the car moved but hacking at the ice didn’t help. I had to put rugs behind the tires to get some traction. I’m parked on the grass near the shed now.

It has gotten cloudy here…we are expecting snow. I’m anxious to get a ZZ plant…yours is doing so well. But, I think I’ll have to wait until it warms up again…hopefully, that will be soon. Home Depot didn’t have any the last time I was there, so I’ll have to go to my favorite nursery. Hope you got your car defrosted, and you are off on an adventure! ;)

Too late now for an adventure, but I’ll do something tomorrow. I did get the car moved, with some rugs under the tires to provide traction.

Your plants are thriving nicely. I don’t blame you for turning off the movie. I feel the same way about reading a book. If I cannot get into the story I will not continue. I saw Little Z yesterday on Mereknits. That photo of him holding that fire truck was precious. His smile can light up a room. He is an adorable little boy.

Sympathise greatly with housebound feeling having been stuck indoors for ten days with flu. Everyone in the U.K. is being struck down at some point with it apparently, ( BAD news for health service ) so guess it’s my turn. Did have flu jab. makes it worse to see very sunny days going past the window. I am,according to friends, an orchid weirdo. I love moth orchids and having spent good money on one I move heaven and earth to get it to repeat flower- don’t care how long I have to wait so long as I get to see the lovely flowers again. I live in a very shady little cottage so it’s not easy. I have 20 !
Can’t wait to watch the film about Churchill and WW2. I am of an age- O.K. 70 and one month- where I like to talk to people about those times. I am lucky in that in my Singing group we have a very sharp lady of 94 who remembers a lot and till a month ago we had a lovely gentleman of 96(sadly passed away) who was in the North Atlantic convoys and submarines in the Med and liked to remember. Keep well, Megan.

Oh, I had to laugh at that comment that “we have to drip again”. I bet people in the south have no idea of what we speak!! We are dripping here again, as well. I will be so happy when we no longer have to be drippy.

Glad you got your car moved and hope you can get out and about tomorrow. It seems so early to be suffering from cabin fever. I usually think of Feb being cabin fever month. Maybe it’s because it has hit so hard, so furiously, and lasted so long for happening so early in the season that it is so prevalent. I have heard so many, myself included, feeling the walls moving in. Victoria, Season 2 begins tonight, and I am quite excited about that! Hope you had a good Sunday!

You’re right – it’s early for cabin fever, but this winter has been one for the books – and we have a long way to go!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
