We managed to survive the wind chill here in the city. That kind of thing doesn’t seem to stop New Yorkers, who were out and about in droves yesterday. And, though it was windy back home, Don thinks it wasn’t as bad as predicted. I braved the mighty wind to get out of the apartment for a while since I didn’t have to be at the afternoon tech rehearsal.
I’m staying in an apartment which is just off Fulton Street, an area full of shops and restaurants. This is Fowler Square. I will admit to not knowing who Mr. Fowler was, but he was clearly important enough to merit a very nice statue.
I found a lovely market where I bought some supplies. I also treated myself to a yummy, yummy almond croissant. Best ever croissant. (There’s a photo of it on my Instagram feed if you find yourself wondering just what this scrumptious croissant looked like.)
I also treated myself to some browsing in this place:
Just blocks away from my digs is a fabulous independent bookstore, Greenlight Bookstore. It’s really wonderful; airy, light-filled, full of books of all kinds. I didn’t buy anything, but I was tempted. Oh, was I tempted! More on the bookstore on Just Let Me Finish This Page today.
As I walked back toward the apartment, the wind was hitting me smack in the face, so I gave in and went inside. I made some dinner and then it was off to the theater to take more notes.
Today is my day off and I have a little exploratory mission planned. It’s cold – the temps will probably not get out of the twenties, but I’m determined. Besides, if I’m being granted a week in NYC, I have to take advantage of it, right?
All photos, by the way, are from my iPhone. I didn’t want to have to deal with my big girl camera while I was here. I had to scrap some of them because my hand isn’t quite as steady with the iPhone. Drat.
The winner of a copy of Baltimore Blues is Debbie. Debbie, I’ve sent you an email. Congratulations!
Happy Monday.

You even have adventures buying a croissant!! Hope you have fun exploring today. Try to stay warm.

There’s post here on this blog somewhere that says what Don and I believe – “Life is an Adventure.” So I can’t get home? I’ll have an adventure instead!
Tana says
A few weekends ago I spent a wonderful few hours in Powell’s in Portland. That place was so big, they have maps of where the different books can be found. Always go with a list or it will just be too overwhelming.
Stay warm and keep your mouth and nose covered when you are out and about in that freezing weather.
Claudia says
Some day I’ll get to Powell’s, Tana. It’s big the way the Strand Bookstore is big – almost too big, it’s overwhelming!
Susie says
Claudia, These photos are very good. I love the blue sky. It was nice you could venture out a bit. I know you were cold, because I know how cold I feel right now and I have on a turtleneck top and fleece jacket and there’s a fire going. I want some 30-40 degree weather.Blessings, xoxo, Susie
Claudia says
It’s very cold, Susie. I went out for several hours today and by the time it started turning cloudy and feeling even colder, I headed back to the apartment. Stay warm!

Claudia says
Doing my best, Donnamae! And that croissant was simply amazing!
Nancy in PA says
Claudia, I looked up Edward Brush Fowler. He was an officer in the Civil War who commanded the Brooklyn 14th Regiment in a total of 22 military engagements, including the Battle of Bull Run, the Second Battle of Bull Run (Manassas), Gettysburg, the Wilderness Campaign and Spotsylvania. After the war, he returned to live and work in Brooklyn, where he was active in veterans’ affairs (Wikipedia). I thought you might like to know this the next time you walk past his statue.
I love reading about your adventures.
Almonds are good for you, body and soul.
Claudia says
Thanks, Nancy! I appreciate the information. I didn’t have time to look him up. What an interesting man he was! So many accomplishments!
Betsy says
What fun! A week in NYC! We’re still having temps in the 50’s and I’m NOT complaining. This is so unusual for Spokane in February. But…I’m heading to the East coast on Saturday so I’m going to experience your fun then. :-)
Blessings,
Betsy
Claudia says
It will still be cold, Betsy. It looks like this frigid weather is sticking with us through February. Yikes.
Barbara W. says
A croissant sounds divine. Top of my list once I’m up and about again.
It’s a holiday here today, so I have one more day to recover from what turned out to be the latest strain of flu. (Even this year’s flu shot didn’t help.)
The bookstore looks so inviting. I like to collect bookmarks from out of town shops. As well as a reference, they often make nice souvenirs in their own right. Munro’s Books in Victoria, BC has some gorgeous ones!
Stay warm and stay well.
Claudia says
Holiday here as well – President’s Day. There are lots of people out and about in the city, enjoying their (frigid) day off. I’m so sorry you’ve had the rotten flu, Barbara. I hope you start to feel better, my friend.

Your photos are fine..Enjoy the day..The winds have died down a bit thank goodness…3-5 inches of snow tonight…I’m a winter lover but this few days is trying my patience…I think it’s just the temps..Worried about Mollie getting frost bite…she who needs a long walk to do her business…Stay warm.
Claudia says
Oh, poor Molly! I worry about Scout too. This weather is hard on our pets and their paws!
Hedy King says
I love the bookstore you’ve found…paradise. Your croissant looked delicious, too. My niece has developed a website of local owner shops in Brooklyn you might find useful this week. Strolby.com. I’ve enjoyed looking at all the little treasures she has discovered. A boost to local market, too. Enjoy your adventure.
Claudia says
I’ll check it out, Hedy. What a neat idea! If the weather was warmer, I’d be walking long distances and discovering even more of Brooklyn. I love walking in the city.

Claudia,
Since you like truffles, you can email Don and maybe he might have these ready for you when you come home:
12oz. semi-sweet chocolate, 4 egg yolks., 1/2 cup Kahlua, 2/3 cup unsalted butter.
Melt choc.in top of double boiler. When melted remove from heat and cool to room temp. Add
egg yolks, one at a time, stirring constantly until thoroughly blended—
Add liqueur and return to double boiler (simmering water) for 2 to 3 minutes stirring constantly.
Then put the mixture into the bowl of a mixer and beat in butter one Tablespoon at a time, beating constantly until airy and fluffy in texture. Then spread in a flat pan and put in the fridge overnight and cover with plastic wrap.
Next day—scoop up with a teaspoon and roll into a ball and then roll in powder sugar, chopped nuts, coconut or chocolate sprinkles. Keep in fridge until ready to eat.
ENJOY!
Claudia says
Oh boy. I’ll get him right on it. I drink very rarely, but I love Kahlua! They sound delicious!
Debbie says
I’m so happy to have won the book! Thank you! I wanted to comment about Edward Fowler and the Brooklyn 14th. Several years ago I was visiting Constitution Island, the home of Anna & Susan Warner (1st cousins to my great-great grandmother) and while I was there, I saw a group of re-enactors from the Brooklyn 14th, nicknamed the “red legged devils” because of the red trousers they wore…it made for a memorable day!
Claudia says
I bet it was such fun! I love learning about Edward Fowler – thanks to my fabulous readers!
Pat says
Well I’m glad you were able to a walk in and some fresh air… Albeit cold. I’ll have to pop over and read about this book store.
The statue I must say… Intrugued me. I had a look see on Google … Civil war general! Faithful to God and Country!
… And that’s the reason I love reading blogs! Variety…have a good week and stay warm.
Claudia says
Who knew? I love learning that kind of thing – spending time in a different place does expand one’s horizons!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Your phone took really good photos! I’m not as steady with my phone camera either. Oh the croissant sounds so good. I’m feeling a bit under the weather today and about to make a cup of Earl Grey tea with honey. Hoping I’m not getting sick since I have no time to be ill…ugh!
Stay warm and I can’t wait to hear about your adventure today.
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
I can’t tell you how many photos I think look good and then, I download them and they’re fuzzy. Darn it!
Oh, feel better, my friend. Take care of yourself today.

Ooh, what fun to go exploring. I love spending time in bookstores, too, as well as fabric stores, yarn shops and stitchery shops. Stay warm and safe!
Claudia says
I will!

Beautiful clear blue skies there despite the cold and wind!
Hope it’s a good week for you Claudia.
Freezing, literally, here – sleet frozen in a solid sheet tonight, not really snow.
Hope the power stays on.
Hugs – Mary
Vicki says
Your photos are amazing. Interesting to me that this part of Brooklyn doesn’t have the tall skyscrapers like Manhattan; I guess it does have more residential space? Stay warm!

We haven’t seen the 20’s for at least a week..Lucky you..Those winds were awful..Bright and sunny today..no wind but 10 degrees…and I’m South of you…
