Since I have no photos from Hartford to share with you (it’s too friggin’ cold to mess around with my iPhone) I’ll share a couple of ‘living room’ photos with you today. Oh, there’s my Scoutie. I miss her. I called and checked on her yesterday and she seems to be doing well. The tech said she was very sweet and ‘mellow.’ That’s the same word they used when she was in for a couple of days being treated for lyme. At the time, I figured she was mellow because she was sick. But here it is again. Mellow is not a word I would use to describe Scout. Sweet? Yes. Mellow? Hmmm. Anyway, I am greatly relieved to hear she is doing okay.
I drove to Hartford after a sleepless night. No kidding. I think I slept a total of 30 minutes. And I was so sore from shoveling that I could barely move. I still am. Somehow I made it here, arrived at rehearsal seemingly cheery and charming, and worked for several hours with the actors. I’m staying in Company Housing this time – in a small apartment that borders Bushnell Park. Nice enough. The apartments are in what used to be an office building and the ceilings are very high. The windows are so tall that I can’t reach the opener for the blinds. I sort of prefer the suite I had at Homewood Suites last year. It was sunny and spacious and cheery. But for two days, I can handle this – although I can tell a smoker stayed here before me. I can smell it everywhere. Yuck.
I’m having lunch with my friend who is the Artistic Director of Hartford Stage, as well as the director of this particular production, before rehearsal today. I will be working on his production of Twelfth Night in the spring. More rehearsal tomorrow and then I drive home. (And there is more snow coming later today. I’m already sick of winter.) At least the roads will be clear when I head out tomorrow evening.
As Don said, it’s a curious feeling knowing that our little family is spread out – all of us in strange beds. Rather unsettling. Though I like the adventure of life on the road, I much prefer being home in my little nest. I was going to say I much prefer my own bed but our mattress is in such a sad state that, in all honesty, I can’t say that. This mattress is better. Everything else? Home is best.
Happy Saturday.

Hope you feel better soon, anytime I do something out of the ordinary I am sore for days!!! Getting old isn’t too fun!!! Love your blog!!! Happy New Year to you!! Keep your chin up, you will be home soon!!!!
Claudia says
Happy New Year to you, Lori Loree!
Jen @ Muddy Boot Dreams says
Maybe a good soak in a tub will help, you have overdone it for sure.
Try putting some dishes of fresh ground coffee around the room to absorb the smell, it might help a little…I hear you on the yuck.
We are homebodies also…so I know that feeling of separation…hopefully the time will pass quickly.
Jen
Claudia says
I soaked in the tub last night, Jen and plan to do it tonight, too!
Jane says
If it makes you feel any better, I really dislike sleeping in any other bed but my own, and our mattress is terrible, too. Thank goodness you just have the weekend and then you will be back at home with Scout. I hope you don’t have snow to drive in…even though I’ve lived in the Midwest all my life, I am really afraid of driving in snow unless it’s local. This year we have had next to none which is very odd.
Have a wonderful lunch and feel better soon.
XO,
Jane
Claudia says
It’s snowing today – it’s started already back home – and by tomorrow the major roads should be clear. I just have to get someone to clear out my driveway so that I can get up it when I get home.
Regula says
Enjoy the company in Hartford and the mattress. Focus on the positive! Have a nice weekend and a safe trip home eventually. Regula
Claudia says
Thanks, Regula. It’s nice seeing my old friend and meeting new people. I always like that.
Donnamae says
Sounds like you need a good soak in a hot tub for those sore muscles! At least you can enjoy your mattress! I usually carry a can of febreeze for smelly rooms…might help! ;)
Claudia says
I just went out and bought some Febreeze – sprayed the bedding and the carpets. I’m also burning a scented candle.
GinaE says
Glad to hear you got to Hartford ok and that Scout is chilling. I hope your drive hope is uneventful. I made your
coffee cake this morning. That recipe is a keeper! I even remembered to take a photo, for my future blog, of how great it looked before we cut in to it. I hate being where a smoker has been too. My dad was a chain smoker all the time I grew up and I’ve always hated any kind of smoking because of it. Have a safe trip home!!!
Claudia says
So glad you liked the coffee cake, Gina!
Debby Messner says
Safe travels, my friend. Glad you got some spary and have a candle lit. You will be home soon. Your outing/job sounds like a fun one. I know you miss Scout and Don. Love seeing your living room. So cozy. Yes,enjoy the good mattress…..I know what you mean. Have a good time with your friend.
Claudia says
Thanks, Debby!
Teresa Kasner says
Sounds like an adventure! I’m curious – what is the work you do with the actors? Sounds interesting!! Hope you get home safe and get your Scout back with you.

I am a voice, speech, dialect and text coach, Teresa. My job is to help the actors be the best they can be onstage.
Patti says
I love to sleep in my own bed too but it is nice to get away and have a change of scene. It makes going home all the more special. We got at least 8 inches of snow last night on top of the 6 we got the other day. Hubby and grandson just got the driveway shoveled out. All this snow certainly is beautiful! Luckily they are very good about snow removal on the streets around here. Soon you will all be back home together. Drive safe on the way home!~Hugs, Patti
Claudia says
The snow is falling fast and furious here in Hartford. It’s very pretty when you don’t have to drive in it!
Laura says
I am turning into such a homebody, too and your nest is so homey I can see why you hate to leave it. I know you will be so excited to get back to Scout and away from that yucky cigarette smell. Be safe, Laura
Claudia says
Some Febreeze and a scented candle help!
Annette Tracy says
I was wondering about your driveway and how you handled that when the major snow plower sprays it and pens you in. I am so spoiled after living out west for so many years. You are my hero for shoveling all that snow! Soon you’ll be home safe and sound w/Scout. Maybe she’s mellow because she’s enjoying all the attention she’s getting.
Claudia says
Or maybe she’s going to let me have it when she sees me again!
Kathy says
There’s no place like home-even if the mattress is lumpy!!
Claudia says
You are right, Kathy.
missy george says
Be safe..Happy New Year..
Claudia says
Happy New Year to you, Missy.
Hope @ Fairhope Supply Co. says
Your photos are so pretty and this is a cozy room. I like hearing your stories about the snow you have, since we have no snow here on the Gulf Coast.
Claudia says
There’s more snow falling even as I write this, Hope.
Pat says
We’ll be on the road tomorrow and sleeping away– we stay with The Honey’s sister in Waco when we have V.A. appts… I know what you mean about the smell of smoke. But it’s a free bed for us on an otherwise long trip. I’d had to have to drive it …then go straight to the hospital and then drive home on New Year’s Eve. So I’m grateful for the room and bed.
Hope you have safe travels. I know you’ll be happy to have your family all back together. Glad you are getting to work! Yippeee! Pat
Claudia says
Thanks, Pat!
Melanie says
Hope all goes well for you in Hartford. Maybe take a couple of ibuprofen and soak in a hot bath. I’m sure it’ll feel so good to get back home to Scout and your own cozy home.
Claudia says
I took some Ibuprofen today, Melanie – supplied by the theater!
Meredith says
Mellow, really? Hmmmm that is not the Scoutie I know, she must be pretending to be someone else for a few days.
Hang in there,
Mere
Claudia says
I’m worried mellow might mean depressed. Poor girl.
Lulu says
Omigoodness, time for you to get on back home whether or not your mattress is comfy.
Claudia says
Tomorrow night and then I can pick Scout up on Monday morning.
karen says
Your living room is so warm and inviting. Love the painted brick especially! Have a good stay, we’ve certainly got snow!
Claudia says
Here, too! It’s really falling hard!
Judy Clark says
I have been thinking about Scout all weekend. We know he is well taken care of and safe. That’s the important thing is his safety and care. Just think how excited he will be when you get back home!!
Drive safely and Happy New Year.
Judy
Claudia says
Thanks, Judy, Happy New Year to you, too. I hope my Scout isn’t too depressed.
Carolynn "Chenille Cottage" says
Now, that’s the difference between comfortable and cozy. Your living room looks cozy and inviting. Your two day diggs look staged and unfamiliar. You know…there’s just no place like home…puppy (or in my case kitties) and all!
I hope things go well and you get home safely.
Blessings,
Carolynn xxx
Claudia says
Carolynn – that second photo is of my dollhouse! I’m not sure if that’s the photo you were referring to. I can’t even take a photo of the apartment – it’s too dark in here.
elyse says
i wish for your safety and happiness, sweetie.

The snow falling here in the city is really beautiful. It’s so pretty when you don’t have to worry about driving in it!
Dayle says
Safe travels, Claudia. I’ve missed being able to make the “favorite thing” party. Hope to be back at some point.
As for winter, I’m so grateful that we have mild winters here in Southeast Texas, and it only snows once in a blue moon. As I get older, I’m even more grateful for that fact, as the body ain’t what it used to be. I don’t know how people stay in a good mood in those parts of the country that have severe winters.
Stay warm!
Claudia says
You’re not kidding, Dayle. Shoveling is hard work anytime but as we get older, oh my!
Kiki says
There’s no place like home!
Claudia says
Absolutely, Kiki.
Norma says
Travel safely home Claudia.
We are off to NZ tomorrow morning, I just checked the weather forecast and it’s UNBELIEVABLE for summer time – temps this week expected to be what would normally be described as winter weather – at least it won’t be snowin’!! – at least I hope not – with weather everywhere being so unsettled these days who can say??!!
That looks like a dollhouse living room pic you sneaked in there :)
Claudia says
It sure is! I’m sorry it’s so cold in NZ – the weather patterns have changed so much around the world. Have fun, my friend!
Carolynn "Chenille Cottage" says
Hi Claudia! Oh, my word…I really did think that your second photo was of the place you were staying whiile away. I guess what I noticed was the little settee. It’s so very cute but for a “real person” it doesn’t have the cushiness that beckons a nice long sit. I’m sorry to be such a goof and misunderstand!
I hope you have an enjoyable few days and that it will help make the time pass more quickly before your husband returns home.
Please forgive me….
Sheepish smiles,
Carolynn xxx
Claudia says
Carolynn, I consider that a compliment! My dollhouse looked real to you! That’s a good thing. And I realize now that I never labeled the photo. My fault.
xoxo

I’m relieved you arrived there safely, Claudia, and I hope you enjoyed your time with the company. What good news that Scout was alright. That must have been a load off your mind while you were away. Yes. Home is always best! I agree.
