Having only one day off can put a lot of pressure on a girl. How to have a lazy morning, perhaps sleeping in for a bit (I did), clean the apartment, catch up on emails and correspondence, buy groceries, talk to sister and father and husband, and start cutting fabric for the quilt? It’s a challenge, but you have to pack it all into one day. The promises to be a week of long rehearsals and lots of run-throughs and that means that at the end of the day I will be warming up something to eat via the microwave and that’s about it.
After a run to the grocery store, I transformed the apartment into my Quilting-Studio-On-The-Road and proceeded to cut lots of strips for the quilt blocks. I discovered I need a new blade for my rotary cutter. But when I will have the time to get out and buy one is another story.
Mabel came out from under her monogrammed cover and did what she was born to do. Isn’t she pretty?
I’m using fabrics from Bonnie & Camille’s Marmalade line. I searched high and low for a layer cake of this particular line and finally found one. I love, love the cheery colors and designs. FYI: a layer cake of fabric consists of forty-two 10″ by 10″ swatches of fabric from a particular designer’s line. This class I’m taking on Craftsy, taught by Camille Roskelley, consists of projects that use layer cakes, charm packs (smaller squares), jelly rolls (2 inch strips) and fat quarters. For me, it is more cost and time effective. I don’t have to shop for each fabric I want to use in the quilt, I don’t have to sort through my stash and I’m adding only those fabrics I’ll use for this specific project. The quilt you see at the bottom of the above photo was made from a jelly roll of fabric.
Gosh, I love fabric. I should add that using a layer cake ordered online keeps me out of the quilt shop. Always a good idea when one is on a budget of next-to-nothing.
But, oh, how I would like lots more of this fabric in my stash.
At the end of the day, after tending to all my chores and cutting fabric, I finished two blocks. I can’t help but smile as I work with these pretty, cheery, beautiful fabrics. I’ve done my share of darkish quilts. Never say never, but I think I won’t be piecing a quilt with dark colors again.
Oh, hello retro gorgeousness!
Now I want to spend all my time on this project.
Oh, right. Thanks for reminding me. I’m here to work on a play. Got it.
But, this is more fun! Working on the play is…well…work.
By the way, that hotel I showed you yesterday?
It’s huge. It takes up a whole city block. I’m thinking I’d like an apartment on the top floor.
Happy Tuesday.

Claudia!! I can’t believe it (and yet, I can!!) I bought the same fabric last week because I saw a beautiful quilt pattern and loved loved loved the fabric. I wrote the company and was told it was the Marmalade collection, so I bought two charm packs and a jelly roll to make the quilt! It’s simply mind boggling how much we think alike sometimes. :-) Back to work for both you and me…but I’m sure we’ll both find a way to sneak some creative time into our days! xxoo, Martha

Beautiful fabric and I can’t wait to see the finished project. Just the thing to come back to at night, even if it’s just to look and touch until you have time to work on it again.
Blessings,
Betsy

Hi Claudia – thanks for the lesson. I’ve never taken any quilting classes or followed any patterns. I would always just go buy a metre of sale cotton or remnant ends and work that way. Then I bought a package of fat quarters at Walmart. When I was in there the other day, I saw jelly rolls, etc and really didn’t know what they were. Now I do. I can see more quilting in my future. Your fabrics are so nice. I like light cheery fabrics but most of the quilts I’ve made have been dark ones too. J

HI Claudia…You know I LOVE your fabrics, Mable and the idea of your making a quilt on the go. I’ve so enjoyed your posts while you are on the job. Your job is so interesting and different than anything I have done or will ever do. I’m on a ‘Vicarious Trip’ with you, and I’m so awed with all phases from apartment living to the view outside your window to being in the theater….which BTW is on my Bucket List….just going…not being in a play. Can you imagine my Texas accent in New York. Well, maybe for Annie Get Your Gun…LOL!!!
Anyway, I’m writing about my Georgia Ancestors and have started a seperate blog for them…like I did for Tracks of My Texas Ancestors. When you have a chance and need a shot of LOL’s come on by. Here’s the link…

Can you imagine the people bustling around that hotel when it was new back in the day?? It looks turn of the century. Being a recovering fabricaholic I know that just seeing fabric can give you a real high! The colors and patterns just make you happy and then when you start to mix andmatch..well, even better! I remember when I used to take quilt classes in a charming suburb near my home in Columbus and it was in an old building from the 1800’s. I loved to go there and just hangout when I was having a stressful day. It always made me feel better. We have a quilt/sewing convention here every year that has the most beautiful quilts. It’s really a wonderful show. YOur featherweight is the perfect tool to take on the road! Enjoy your day just for you! ~Hugs, Patti

I love the colors in your quilt blocks..should be beautiful!

Gorgeous fabric, Claudia. Buying on line is a way to stay focused, that’s for sure. In a fabric store, or garden shop, I tend to get easily distracted by all the pretty things and come home with items not on my list. What a great way to spend your evenings – you’ll have a wonderful quilt to remember this particular time in your life.
