This morning, the server was down for a while, so I’m posting a bit later than normal. And yesterday, the email version of my post didn’t go out, despite my best efforts to rectify the situation. PIA. A notation we used to use with difficult clients when I worked at an animal hospital. In case you’re wondering what I mean, you may fill the blank: Pain in the _____.
Anyway, I’m thinking of using another service for emails, which would cost me a modest amount of money each month. But I don’t really have time to deal with it at the moment. I will soon – unless Feedburner suddenly starts actually doing what it’s supposed to again. I’m not holding my breath.
I hung the quilt yesterday and I’m really happy I did.
Doesn’t it look striking there on the wall? I love the way the yellow in the quilt is picked up by the yellow lamp – which is something I had already visualized before I hung the quilt.
I made this quilt when we were still living in San Diego, so it’s at least 15 years old, but it’s more likely about 17 years old. I’ve made a lot of quilts over the years (always hand quilted by yours truly, by the way) and this just might be my favorite.
Note to Don: we need lots of money so we can build an addition on the house so I have lots of wall space so that I can hang this quilt somewhere. Get on it, please.
For now, it comes along with me when I stay in Hartford. What a nice companion!
Those are pansies, of course, a flower I’m particularly fond of.
I finished the Peter Robinson book and am about to start the newest Cara Black. I’m keeping an eye on the weather report because our local guys are still hedging their bets. Most likely, we’ll escape the brunt of the storm. But, if the path varies in the slightest – now they’re saying as little as 25 miles – then we’ll get a LOT of snow.
Since I’m planning on heading home late in the day on Sunday, I would appreciate the storm heading out to sea, thank you very much.
Seriously, though, to those of you in the path of the storm – please take care. We are all sending prayers and positive thoughts your way. I’m thinking especially of Washington, D.C. and Virginia and Maryland. Stay inside. Don’t do anything foolish. Stay safe.
Happy Friday.

What a pretty scene that quilt creates!
Claudia says
It does, doesn’t it? xo
Claudia E says
I love your quilt and it looks perfect hanging on that wall.
Claudia says
Thank you, Claudia!
Margaret says
Just perfect, especially with the yellow lamp.
Claudia says
That yellow lamp makes me smile for all sorts of reasons, Margaret!
Vera says
How vibrant Claudia! Love it. And with the yellow lamp…and flowers on the table…perfect. I think at some point (obviously when you are not on the road working) you need to do a post on your various quilts. I’d enjoy seeing them all. The Phila metro area is looking at 12-24″…I’m ready to hunker down and enjoy being “trapped.” Plenty or reading material, plenty of tea, etc. Keeping fingers crossed for you that you can get home. Stay warm and safe.
Vera says
Forgot to mention — I did make your Cloud Biscuits last night. They were a HUGE hit! Thanks again for the recipe…I will be making them often.
Claudia says
So glad! They are the best, Vera, and I’m going to make some for myself here in Hartford!
Claudia says
Stay safe, Vera. You guys are really being hit! Perfect excuse to sit inside and read, my friend.
Doris says
Claudia, your quilt is beautiful. Maybe you can find room in your new office for it. Doris
Claudia says
I thought of that, but we just took down another quilt that was hanging in that space – the one made from the shirts of Don’s late father. So I don’t think I’ll be hanging another quilt there – unless Don goes for the idea.
Shanna says
Love pansies. Love the quilt. About forty years ago I had a lime green ginger jar lamp like the yellow one in your photo. It left home with one of the kids and disappeared, and I mourn it still.
Claudia says
I understand – I love that shape of lamp and I think I need to find some for the cottage.
Nancy Moreland says
Such a pretty quilt you made and yes it goes perfect with the yellow lamp. Getting ready for the big one here in Maryland. Going to bake some fresh bread and do some cooking today just in case we loose power this weekend. Well I am ready for spring. I knew I shouldn’t have put my snowman flannel sheets on the bed the other day!! grrr Take care this weekend and stay warm.
hugs
Claudia says
Sounds like you’re going to be well prepared, Nancy. Stay safe!
Betsy says
I love the quilt! The colors are vibrant and beautiful and the pansies are a favorite of mine too. Just curious how you mounted the quilt to the wall?
Claudia says
Very small push pins, Betsy! Purple push pins, at that.
Dana says
Awaiting our 2 feet of snow, with mother, mother’s cat, my cats, and fiancé all hunkered down in the house here. It’s just starting now and we won’t see the sun again for 2 days. We have a ton of food in the house, laptops and phones going, blankies in hand, tea on the hob. I so hope you don’t get this weather in Hartford so you can make your trip home. Love that quilt with the yellow lamp and the pink vase! Your flat looks warm and cozy!
Claudia says
Glad you’re all together! Stay safe and warm, Dana!
Julie says
Your quilt looks amazing Claudia. The yellow lamp looks so pretty next to it. I love how you made your temporary house your own.
Thank you for the wishes to be safe. We are 10 miles outside of Washington DC. Now predicting up to 30 inches in our area. Ugh. My one hope is the electricity stays on!
Hope you get home safely.
Julie
Claudia says
Oh, I hope so, too! That’s always my worry when a storm like this comes in. We’ve had two major outages in the last year and it isn’t fun – especially in winter! Stay safe, Julie.
Barbara W. says
What a lovely piece. The apartment looks very pretty with all your added touches. I liked the look of the café you visited the other day, although I did have to look up the unfamiliar term ‘blue state’. I didn’t really think it meant a state populated only by sad people. Semantics!
Claudia says
Ah, I forget that you Canadians might not know what a Blue State is! I have, purely by chance and jobs and birth, always lived in blue states. Although, Michigan isn’t a blue state at the moment.
Donnamae says
That is a stunning quilt! And you found the perfect place to display it! Goes so well with your lamp. I really hope you get to go home on Sunday. I feel for the people that are getting dumped on this weekend…they are not equipped to handle all that snow! Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
They aren’t. Washington D.C. got an inch yesterday and everything went haywire! What are they going to do with over 2 feet?
Donnamae says
I don’t know…but I do know it’s going to take a long time to clean up the streets there! I think the most we’ve ever gotten here in Madison was maybe 18 inches? And, that shutdown the city for a day at most…but clean up lasted for several…and we have snow plows! Just hope they don’t lose power…keeping my fingers crossed! ;)
Claudia says
We’ve certainly had over 2 ft before – not often, but it’s definitely happened since we moved here.
Mary Sullivan says
It does look warm and cozy with your beautiful quilt hanging.
Perfect day here. . . . . . well it is for staying close to the fire or in the kitchen making something warming to fend off the ice falling from the sky! May turn to snow later, but not too much accumulation expected. I will not be leaving home until Sunday!
Be careful if you drive home.
Hugs – Mary
Claudia says
Stay home, stay safe and stay by the fire, Mary!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
I am thinking, possibly, on another working stay in Hartford that you had the quilt hung in that same “area”…..? I remember loving the beautiful purples and yellows. Certainly brightens the room up! The lamp was meant to be moved to that spot!!
I hope you miss the storm. I am so very happy it is not in “our neck of the woods” this time, but certainly feel for those who will be impacted. Keeping the power on seems like it may be a challenge with the impending wind and snow accumulations being predicted.
58 days til Spring, and I think we are all counting!!
Claudia says
I had it on the wall near the sofa last time I was here – and it might have been on the wall by the table the previous visit. Yes, it’s always been this quilt because it’s so beautiful and makes such a statement.
I’m hoping the power stays on – we definitely have a wind warning here.
Karen says
I live right in the bullseye of this storm but we are ready. Fortunately living in a condo we don’t have to do snow removal ourselves. I have a yellow lamp just like yours that I picked up at an auction last year for only $1. I had one similar in my bedroom growing up. My “new” one resides in our guest room.
Claudia says
That yellow is a cheery color, Karen. Glad you don’t have to do snow removal – my husband is going to have to handle it all by himself!
Linda L. says
Your quilt is very beautiful. You should make some and put them up for sale in your shop!!
Claudia says
Too much work. Too much hand stitching. And I’d never recover the money and time I put into it!
Barbara says
Love the quilt. You are just full of talents. Hope you can get home – and get home safely.
Claudia says
Me too. We’ll just have to wait and see. Thanks, Barbara!
Janet in Rochester says
My mother was a quilter, and THAT is one beautiful quilt. Love the colors and shapes of your pieces. Did you follow a pattern or “free-lance” it? Over the years I’ve noticed that I seem to be more drawn to “modern” quilts – rather than the “old-timeys” I guess – and yours has a very lovely, sophisticated look. And it does just MAKE that wall. Pretty, pretty, pretty [I just LOVE pretty].
Here’s hoping the blizzard decides on an Atlantic crossing this weekend. We’re not supposed to get any appreciable weather from it either, but have learned from experience that the operative word is always “SUPPOSED.” Take care, stay warm, stay safe…?
Claudia says
I followed a pattern in this case, but sometimes I just go with the flow and create a design on my own.
I’m keeping an eye peeled on the weather forecast, Janet!
Susan says
You have inspired me to bring out the quilt I have been working on for far more than 17 years. I am a hand quilter too. It’s so comforting and although I realize that everyone seems to be machine quilting these days, I don’t think I will ever succumb. I once read that Amish quilters always leave an obvious flaw in their quilting because man is not perfect. Stay warm and safe. I wish you a happy homecoming this Sunday.
Big Texas Hugs,
Susan and Bentley
Claudia says
Yes, they do leave a flaw or ‘mistake.’ I don’t do it on purpose, but they’re there anyway! I’ve noticed that hand quilting is a little harder for me now – not that I can’t do it – but I have to give myself breaks more often. Same with crocheting.
Susie says
Claudia, Your flowers and that lamp go perfectly with your quilt…making it more homey there. I hope you aren’t snowed in there. Be safe when you are out. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
Claudia says
I hope we’re not snowed it, too. We’ll just have to wait and see, Susie.
Betsy says
Claudia, I adore that quilt. Purple is my favorite color so that jumps out at me first, but the yellow with the lamp is beautiful. I’ve always like purples and yellows together. I just talked to Mandy just outside of D.C. And it’s snowing there. It started about an hour ago. She’s all hunkered down.
Blessings,
Betsy
Claudia says
I like purple and yellow together, too! I hope Mandy and her family stay home and stay safe, Betsy!
Wendy TC says
The quilt brings in a fun burst of color and very much some coziness to a generic apartment. Hope weather cooperates with your plans to go home. How long will you be home before you have to return to Hartford?
Claudia says
About 24 hours. That’s it. I work 6 days a week, so I have to get back to Hartford very quickly.
Denise says
Here in the Delaware Valley we’re under a blizzard warning. They were saying we would get 12-18″ of snow. Now they are predicting 18-24″ with 45-55 mph winds in the Philadelphia Metro area and here in southeastern NJ as well. I think I”ll spend the weekend hybernating with a quilt!
Claudia says
Oh boy! You’re getting a lot of snow! Take care, stay inside and stay safe!
Melanie says
Love the quilt. I’m sure it makes you smile when you walk into the apartment.
Sure hope that snow misses you so that you can make it home safely on Sunday!
Claudia says
Me too, Melanie. But we’ll see. Now, they’re saying between 3 – 5 inches…so unless things go really crazy, I hope to get home Sunday night or Monday morning.
kathy says
your home-away-from-home looks cozy … a feeling definitely worth the effort of packing extra bags of quilts, candles, etc.
and great job on the quilt … it is beautiful!
hope you and everyone else stay warm and travel safe!
kathy in iowa
Claudia says
It’s absolutely worth the effort, Kathy. I feel fairly cozy here and if I have to spend five weeks away from home, I definitely need cozy!
Kim says
I always enjoy seeing the pansy quilt! I’m in Annapolis so right in the bullseye of the storm. I’m safe and warm with bread in the machine and taco soup on the stove. Waiting for the 50 mph winds and whiteout conditions! LOL! Just hoping we don’t lose power which we often do in this type of storm.
DH just called to say he was in an accident on his way home. Person suddenly totally stopped in the middle of the interstate and he slid into them. He’s ok, says he thinks his car is drivable and police were just arriving. Broken cars can be fixed much easier than people so it’s not that bad.
Claudia says
Oh goodness! Thank God your husband is okay and that he can get home. Stay safe, Kim! And I know you’ll be happy when you see your husband walk in the door.
Judy Clark says
Your quilt looks magnificent on the wall! And how homey it makes the apartment look.
Judy
Claudia says
It does, Judy. I don’t know if I could handle living here for five weeks if I didn’t add some homey touches! xoxo
Monica says
Your quilt is beautiful. I love the colors and the design. Very nice. And I’m a fan of pansies
also.
I’m in the DC/VA/MD area and we are getting hammered here. They have all declared a state of emergency. Even the Metro will shut down tonight at 11pm until at least thru Sunday.
I’ve never heard of that. It’s a hairy situation for sure.
We are all good unless we loose power. I don’t want to even think about that.
I hope you can make it back home on Sunday safely. So much travel has simply come to a standstill.
Take care and have a nice weekend.
Monica
Claudia says
I bet you are getting hammered, Monica! Stay home and stay safe. I hope you don’t lose power! xo
Jacki says
The quilt looks beautiful….. so cozy. What method of hanging do you use when you’re away from home?
Claudia says
Pushpins, Jacki. Easy!
Jacki says
Easy enough! Thanks for such a quick response.
