It’s February 13th and we are already in the midst of FRIGID in all caps. I was glancing at our local weather forecast and Sunday night? Wind chills of more than 20 below zero. Hello. So, if you’re expecting lots of photos of Brooklyn, you might want to let go of that idea. The weekend might go like this: tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, preview, lots of note taking, grabbing some food to go and running back to the apartment. This will not be a sight-seeing weekend.
Although there is a bookstore nearby…
And of course, as often seems to be the case, Valentine’s Day will be spent apart from my husband. We had planned to attend an gig that Don is doing on that night, but the opportunity to work calls, so that isn’t happening.
Actually, we laugh at the whole V-Day thing, which was more of a big deal for us (if it ever was) when we were first dating, but is hardly on our radar nowadays and hasn’t been for years. I tend to balk at what I call Hallmark holidays and run in the opposite direction. No Valentine’s Day decorations here – but then again, I am sadly lacking in the special occasion decorating gene.
We are quite the romantic pair, as you must have gathered if you’ve read this blog for any length of time. We say “I love you” to each other several times a day, every day. We cuddle together on the sofa every evening. We really like each other. We never take each other for granted. We are more in love than ever.
So…dare I say that every day is Valentine’s Day here at the cottage? Or would that sound too sappy?
That being said, I wouldn’t mind some chocolate truffles.
Happy Friday.
Vera says
Oh yes, chocolate would be nice! My hubby and I are like you and Don – every day is a joy to be together. Sorry you will miss Don’s gig. Do stay warm! Our forecast is similar — low of 0 on Sunday with wind chills making it feel like -25 or worse. Yikes!!! It was 8 on my patio this a.m and very, very windy. Makes my face sting.
Claudia says
It is really, really cold out there, Vera!
Tana says
I haven’t really enjoyed Valentine’s Day since I gave out cards to everyone in elementary school. My husband was never a Valentine person either. Worked out just fine.
Barbara says
I do hope Don reads your post today, or you may have to find your own truffles in NYC! Safe travels!
An Enchanted Cottage says
Awww, not sappy at all, Claudia. I love it. Have a great time in Brooklyn, and tell Don to have a great time at his gig! We, too, are experiencing the same frigid temps you are, with more snow expected as well. Spring will be more than welcome this year!
Donna
Debbie Price says
Be safe going there and coming back. I think I would rather have all the snow than the frigid temps and wind chills. Laura doesn’t even go out if the wind is blowing. It has always hurt her when that cold wind doth blow! Hugs to you and Don. Wish I could see Don at one of his gigs! Have a lucky Friday the 13th.
Deb
Corinne says
There is no shame in buying yourself a chocolate truffle! I do it all the time and I have a DH who does it as well.
Dawn says
Yep, we have those temps coming our way too. I was hoping for a little break in the weather by now, but February is always the worst :(
Linda @ A La Carte says
I’ve never been a big Valentine day person, I enjoy the chocolate of course! I do like celebrating love and for me it’s love of Family now! Stay warm this weekend.
hugs,
Linda

We don’t do the Valentine’s day thing either. I refuse to spend a small fortune on a card, I don’t want flowers that have been tripled in price or go out to eat a meal that costs almost as much as a weeks worth of groceries! We prefer to stay home, cook a nice meal and watch a good movie. That’s much more romantic to us! Safe travels and stay warm.

You really had me at “truffles”, sweets! hahaha

Well, my sore throat turned into bronchitis (I have a terribly impaired immune system), so I am going to confine myself to bed today and try not to obsess about work and deadlines. Perhaps tomorrow will bring me breakfast in bed (preferably ice cream).
I think all the cold meds are affecting my ability to see/think properly – I read “saucy” not “sappy” toward the end of your post. Well, whether your Valentine’s Day is sappy or saucy (or both!), I’m sure it will be filled with laughter and love.
Janie F. says
We don’t do the Valentine’s Day thing either Claudia. But this morning the 2 yr old I babysit brought us each a valentine. She had helped sign her own name to. So precious. It’s been a bit chilly here for a few days but turning colder this weekend. Beautiful sunshine today. I’ll be sending good thoughts your way as you go into the city and deal with the frigid temps.
Donnamae says
Funny…I didn’t get that gene either! Although I used to do some small decorating when my kids were little tikes. We will be home tomorrow…not celebrating….we are going to a garden show today, and then dinner. I personally think we should tell our loved ones everyday we love them…and not make such a big deal about Feb. 14. Although, some special chocolate would be nice! Stay warm this weekend….sounds like you will be busy! ;)

I guess I’m out of the norm on this subject but that pretty much always the case for me LOL. My husband and I have been married for almost 24 years and we have a wonderful relationship. We do so many things together and share so much in common. And we both are always doing special things out of the norm for the other to say I love you.
But having said all of that I LOVE Valentine’s Day and we always celebrate in some special way. I love the idea and see nothing wrong with a special day being set aside each year in celebration of Love. I know it’s not for everyone and that’s fine too but in our household we love Valentine’s Day.
This year we won’t be going out as I’m dealing with a lot of pain this week but he will be making a nice dinner, I’ll make something in chocolate. We will open a nice bottle of wine and watch a sappy, romantic probably rather old movie. And I’m pretty sure I’ll get yellow roses because they are my favorite.
I hope the weather isn’t too frightful for you this weekend Claudia! And I hope you have very safe travels.
Blessings,
Belinda

Our St. Valentine’s Day celebration will include the theatre in the evening – Much Ado About Nothing – which I think is in its modern version and should be fun – Jasmin will go with us. She will have to celebrate with her new (although they’ve known each other since Kindergarten!) boyfriend on Sunday!
I have a chocolate surprise for Bob tomorrow and a card (not Hallmark!), but doubt he’ll have one for me because he knows I’m trying to eat healthy, so I may have to share his, ha ha! Everyone needs a chocolate on V-Day.
Take care in freezing NYC – hope your apt. will be cozy.
Love, Mary

We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day much here either. No need for cards and flowers when my wonderful husband shows me every. single. day. just how much he loves me. I did crochet a few hearts and have them strung on a garland on the kitchen island. Oh and I made a few small felt hearts that are hanging around but that’s about it. We don’t go out for dinner…I detest crowds and it’s pretty much a normal day here. The nice thing about it this year is that it is a Saturday and he doesn’t have to go to work so we get to be together.
Blessings,
Betsy

I think about 2/3 of the country will be sharing in the trying to keep warm endeavors this weekend. Here it is supposed to be -11* REAL temps tomorrow morning w/ wind chills in the -30 range most of the day. Yuk. Just yuk.
I do have a few VD things up in the house, but we don’t do the cards/present thing. And going out to eat on that day is so crowded and noisy! So, I guess being retired (semi-retired) we just do the out to dinner thing whenever, and chocolate is good any time!! I suppose on Sunday(the 15th)we could get some of the good stuff for 1/2 price! Just thought of that!!
Are you taking your quilting w/ you, or is that too big to transport for a shorter period of time? I’m sure you have books to read to keep you company. Safe travels, and stay warm!!
Marianne L says
A little sappy never hurt anyone, especially if chocolate is involved. As a widow of 14 years, I envy the closeness that you and Don enjoy and I’m glad that you both appreciate how lucky you are.

Happy for you..Hope you get those truffles..
Nancy Blue Moon says
Not sappy at all Claudia..every day from the heart is much better than once a year because you are made to feel that you have to..and you are so right about Hallmark holidays..I would stay in from this bitter cold and read as much as possible if I were you..
Beth K. says
I think it is wonderful that your marriage is romantic and full of love. Every marriage should be like that. I’m fortunate to have a loving marriage, too. I understand when you say every day is Valentine’s Day! I try not to take that for granted. Our spouses are precious and we should treat them that way…every day.
Janet in Rochester says
Just like to say “Happy Valentine’s Day” to everyone! Whether or not you have a special someone in your life, I hope you have a lovely day. And some chocolate too… :>)
Nancy in PA says
Janet, that was so nice of you to wish everyone here a lovely day. Thank you, and the same to you.
Claudia, I hope that by the time you are reading these comments, you are snug and warm in your home-away-from-home and enjoying a hot cup of tea. Break a leg.
What a nice little (world-wide) community you have created.
Barbara Miller says
Be careful and be safe in this weather. Happy Valentines to you two love birds.
Trudy Mintun says
What no photos of Brooklyn? I don’t blame you. With temps that cold I don’t even go out to get the mail. We have a wind chill now of -35. Tomorrow the high is -4. Dress warm, and walk fast is my advice.
We did V-Day one year when we first got together. The next year there was miscommunication of plans. The following year I received a card that said…I hate Valentines day. It was printed everywhere on the card.
There is nothing sappy about love or romance. It is what makes life good.
Wendy TC says
Isn’t it ice that your loving relationship isn’t governed by anyone’s idea of the perfect day? Even if it weren’t VD weekend, you would miss your husband anyway. Not observing those Hallmark holidays sure takes away the emotional pressure of believing you HAVE to be together.
Usha Gore says
Hallmark holiday.. Yes that is what it is. Like my Mom would say “every day is Mother’s Day” .. It’s wierd that whenever the east coast has a horrible winter, we in the Pacific NW have a warm and sunnier winter. Feb is looking like April here and today was 60 and sunny in Seattle.. It’s this whole global warming thing :(
Vicki says
You probably won’t get this because I’m responding so late in the day (or should I say in the wee hours), but Happy Valentine’s Day anyway and I consider you and Don to be a great, in-love couple. Not everybody has that after a lot of years. You’re lucky. I hope you’re spared the ‘monster storm’ they’re talking about that’s gonna hit hard on Valentine’s Day in New England. Sounds like it’s going to be the worst in Massachusetts to Maine. It’s so unbelievable, how two coasts can be so different, but I’m here north of L.A. in SoCal and, for two days, we have temps in the 90s with the dry, hot winds off the desert again. Even our nearby beaches are abnormally warm. My husband had the day off today and was trying to paint the outside of our house but he had to stop because the paint dries too quickly as he tries to drag the brush. No blankets for sleep; it’s just too warm. But, remember, we’re in serious drought with scant rainfall, so you’ll hear no gloating from us about your glut of snow. Stay safe and warm…and get home soon, if you can!
