On Your Mark: Name Your Ten Favorite Movies

February 1, 2015 at 8:49 am by Claudia

Oh boy. 10 – 15 inches of snow headed our way tonight into tomorrow. I know some of you to the west of us are already getting hammered.

Don, honey…I’m glad you’ve got that snowblower because I am not up for shoveling at this point in time. Maybe a bit of shoveling for Dame Scout’s mini-corral, if I’m feeling better, but that’s about it. Right now, even that seems an impossibility.

Let’s look at something pretty. Friday night’s sunset:

2-1 sunset

Pretty spectacular. Isn’t it nice that I can just pop my head out the kitchen door and capture this beauty?

Today’s topic:  Name Your Ten Favorite Movies.

I’ll start off, in no particular order, and I know as soon as I see your lists, I’ll remember others that I love. These are movies that I will immediately drop whatever I’m doing to watch.

It’s truly hard to narrow the list down to ten, but give it your best shot.

1.  To Kill a Mockingbird (no surprise there)

2. Anything with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers

3. All the President’s Men

4. It Happened One Night

5. Big Country

6. The Awful Truth

7. His Girl Friday

8. Anything with Audrey Hepburn

9. It’s a Wonderful Life

10. The Shop Around the Corner

11. Add on: Cinema Paradiso

Okay. Your turn. I may or may not comment, depending on how I’m feeling.

(I probably will.)

Happy Sunday.

Gone With The Wind, White Christmas, The Big Chill, Terms of Endearment, Four Seasons, 4 Weddings and a Funeral, Sleepless in Seattle, The Sting, Goodfellas, Les Miserables

Eclectic list I know, but these are the ones I will watch again and again.

    hope you feel better soon!

lovely blog you have – the photos of your sweet pup and cottage and your obvious love for them and for your husband, your choice of words and books and now movies … thanks for all you share.

here are some of my favorite movies:
    it’s a wonderful life
    Jesus Christ, superstar
    the ten commandments
    you’ve got mail
    sleepless in seattle
    rear window
    north by northwest
    the goodbye girl
    dan in real life
    while you were sleeping
    shop around the corner
    amelie
    old b/w westerns
    planes, trains and automobiles
    …

I live in the midwest and we are now getting lots of snow (finally … been a pretty dry, mild winter here so far). hope no one gets clobbered with it and stays safe.

    thanks again.

Here’s my list: Julie and Julia, Ground Hog Day, The Music Man, Gosford Park, Pride and Prejudice (Keira Knightley, Moonlight Kingdom, Lili, Places in the Heart, The Lion in Winter, and Mr. Blanding Builds His Dream House. Talk about eclectic….I’m pretty much all over the place. Of course, there are more. I had to go back and forth crossing things off and I’m still not sure if this is my perfect ten, but I have loved each of these movies and watched everyone of them multiple times. Is it snowing now? We live in a desert community in Eastern Washington and get very little precipitation. I don’t want to be snowed in, but we could use some more moisture and a little of the white stuff would be a treat…notice, I said “a little”. Keep warm and get to feeling better.

I have dozens of favourites that I’m happy to lend, but can’t part with permanently. Here are ten (in no particular order) that would stop my cleaning house on a Saturday morning if they were suddenly aired:

    1. Basquiat (1996 – bio/drama by Julian Schnabel)

    2. All About Eve (1950 – I’m a big fan of George Sanders)

    3. Sophie Scholl – The Final Days (2005 – German, heart-wrenching true story, because I need to cry sometimes)

    4. Little Women (1949 – with June Allyson)

    5. The Dinner Game (1998 – French, I laughed so damn hard I almost fell off the couch. Why, oh why, was it remade as that dreadful “Dinner for Schmucks”?)

    6. Bladerunner (1982 – I love Ridley Scott movies)

    7. Cabaret (1972)

    8. A Christmas Carol (1951 – with Alistair Sim)

    9. Au Revoir Les Enfants (1987 -French, because I’m slightly obsessed with WWII movies and need to cry even more)

    10. Sense and Sensibility (1995 – oh that Alan Rickman, need I say more?)

Hope you’re feeling better soon! I vote Winter done.

I’m not really cheating again, but Victor, my elderly feline film viewing friend (John, the elderly husband, not so into movies), is a great fan of both Val Lewton and Preston Sturges and demands the inclusion of the following:
    1. Cat People
    2. Curse of the Cat People
    3. The Leopard Man
    4. The Seventh Victim
    5. Palm Beach Story
    6. Sullivan’s Travels
    7. Hail the Conquering Hero
    8. The Lady Eve
    9. The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek
and just because we both love it,

I love reading everyone’s lists. I am reminded of so many films I had forgotten and I am making a new to-see list as i read everyone’s favourites. Ok, I know I will revise this as soon as I hit ‘post comment’ but here goes:
    I Know Where I”m Going
    All that Heaven Allows
    The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Pride and Prejudice (The Joe Wright, Keira Knightley one)
    Mrs Miniver
    Two for the Road
    Goodfellas
    French Kiss
    Moonstruck
    What’s Up Doc?
(and those that almost made it: Love Songs, Rear Window, The Earrings of Madame de . . .). This was a fun thing to do while eating breakfast. Thank you.

All the President’s Men [love historical films]
Auntie Mamie [a tour de force for Rosalind Russell]
    Field of Dreams [just magical]
The Godfather [so well-done in every way]
The Man Who Came to Dinner [the Golden Age of wit in the movies]
Moonstruck [the movie with the most number of quotable lines ever, imo]
Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House [spot-on perfect performances by every single person
Quiz Show [directed by Robert Redford, and not a wrong note in the entire film]
The Remains of the Day [same as Quiz Show – no sour notes]
State of the Union [to me the very best Tracy & Hepburn movie ever, and one you never hear mentioned].
If I can add a category or two, I’d say most everything by Frank Capra, and Alfred Hitchcock. PS – feel better soon.

I was blog-hopping around and your name came up (turns out it was a different Claudia) which got me wondering what you were up to – okay, before I go any further, I have to say that I am in LOVE with your dog – that pic with him on the sofa is just the best ever. Your photography just gets better and better and I so enjoyed catching up on some of your posts. Your blog is just beautiful and I smiled all the way through it.

Okay, my list – this is challenging because I am HORRIBLE at remembering names- ANY name – movies, songs, people, actors, bands, – trust me, you would never want me as a trivial pursuit partner. But this missing gene of mine is a quirk my honey finds endearing…..

Okay, if I get the name right, here is my list:

    Lars and the Real Girl
    Brother Oh Where art Thou
Fiddler on The Roof (original musical)
    Some like it Hot
    Rear Window
Anchor Man (I know, sad, right?)

    The King’s Speech
    Julie and Julia

    Four Christmases

Two for the Road: all I have to do is hear Mancini’s music and I start to cry.

Oh this is great! So sorry that I’m late to the party. I have a list of 10 but being that I love movies so very much it is certainly not correct to say that these are my only favorites. I could never pick just 10! I adore the movies shown on TCM – I watch all the time. So here’s my short list……Have a wonderful day Claudia!

    Last of the Mohicans (1992)
    Shop Around the Corner
    An Affair to Remember
    The Family Stone
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
    Bridges of Madison County
    Out of Africa
    Lincoln
Sabrina – actually ANYTHING with Audrey is wonderful
Little Women – I actually love all three versions – Kathryn Hepburn in the first, Elizabeth Taylor in the second and Susan Sarandon and Wynonna Ryder were great in the latest

And I must add anything with Carey Grant I love.

The very tippy, top of my list is “Inn of the Sixth Happiness”. A REAL love story. Ingrid Bergman and Curt Jurgens. Think I will watch it tomorrow.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
