Egg Cups, Part 10

March 27, 2023 at 8:00 am by Claudia

I’m writing a couple of posts ahead of time and this is the first: part 10 of our little tour.

• The egg cup on the left was a gift. It is Holland mold egg cup, one that would be distributed for customers to paint and decorate by hand. This one is beautifully painted and the painter’s name is on the bottom. It is one of my largest egg cups. One-of-a-kind.

• This little one is much like the bunny I showed you the other day, the one who reminds me of Scout. It’s tiny and made in Japan.

• One of the first cups I purchased, by Holt Howard. It’s quite large. It was in mint condition until, several years later, I knocked into it and it broke. Sigh. I have glued it back together and, fortunately, the damage is in the rear of the cup. These still pop up fairly frequently on eBay.

As you read this, I’ll either be on the bus headed to NYC, or in the rehearsal space meeting the cast and listening to a first read-through.

Stay safe.

Happy Tuesday.

Part Nine; Starring Some Disney Characters

March 26, 2023 at 9:54 am by Claudia

Thanks for the wonderful comments yesterday. I don’t expect you to comment on every egg cup post, but I sure appreciate it when you do. I have a list of things to do today that is a mile long, as I’m headed into the city tomorrow – and most likely every day next week. These will be long, long days and I’m gearing myself up for all of it.

I may not post some days. It will depend on how much turn-around time I have. I’ll know more, of course, when I see how rehearsal days are set up.

It’s sunny here today, but it’s damn windy. I’m tired of all the wind. But hey, at least i get to hear the wind chimes….

Today in our egg cup tour:

The group of egg cups that it took me 17 years to gather – The vintage Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs gang. 17 years! That might be the most patient I’ve ever been, for anything – except finding Don, of course. A bit of back story for you; they were made in the late thirties, early forties. For years and years, when they appeared, they went for a lot of money. A lot. It was not unusual to find one cup going for several – and I mean several – hundred dollars or even a thousand plus dollars. My friend Nels, who has one of the biggest egg cup collections that I’ve ever seen, purchased all of his via auctions, antique shops, etc., before there was eBay. Once eBay entered the picture, the prices slowly went down. Still – they rarely came up for auction. I’m pretty sure that Doc was the first one I found,  and then Dopey and Bashful. And it stayed that way for several years. Just three.

Gradually, I accumulated a few more, one at a time over the course of several years. One day, I decided to post about my collection on the egg cup collectors Facebook page – maybe someone out there had some? Sure enough, a woman in Canada contacted me to say she had a few that I didn’t have. We negotiated a price, and I got three more – Sneezy, Happy, and Snow White. (She lived in Orillia, Ontario, by the way, the same town my grandmother was from.) I eventually purchased another Snow White because her face paint was better- so now I have two Snow Whites.

The very last one I found was Sleepy. Sleepy, for some reason, was made with two different cup designs. One was the exact same cup and dwarf as Sneezy, the only difference being the word Sleepy on the cup. I wish I knew the story of that one! But the one I wanted was the correct Disney dwarf and I eventually found him, after years of searching.

They were all under $100.00 – most of them in the thirty dollar range.

Doc was my first. Sleepy was my last.

Heavens to Betsy, I love them. If I’d found them as a complete set, that would have been nice but not as satisfying. And frankly, it would have been too expensive for me. It was the quest, the constant search, over the course of 17 years that makes them so meaningful. They sit in the first two rows of cubbies on the left, which is where my eye always lands on anything – left to right, top to bottom. They’ve earned that position.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Part 8: Egg Cups

March 25, 2023 at 9:10 am by Claudia

Yesterday’s post should have been Part 7 of the egg cup tour, but I just realized that I had two Part 6 posts in a row! Oy. So I went back and edited the title of the post. As for today, we’re on Part 8 and it’s a dark, rainy, sleety day, so taking photos is difficult.

Hence, we move to the home of the dolls to get a better photo:

The one on the left was a gift from my longtime online pal, Linda. It’s so adorable. Not showing in the photo is the tail, which is removable and functions as a salter for the egg. And let’s face it, the color of that adorable egg cup is perfect for me. That little sticker says “Our Own Import.” I love it when the original stickers are still intact.

In the center, a little egg cup with a pale blue/lavender lustreware cup. Made in Japan. It usually holds a marble egg that I’ve had for years.

On the right, a beautiful goose egg cup from France. I really love this one; it’s so graceful and beautiful. Interestingly, I found it in a local antique shop – and by local, I mean in the Hudson Valley somewhere. It’s rare for me to find an egg cup I’m interested in buying around here.

Thank you to those of you who are taking the time to comment on these posts. I wasn’t going to do an egg cup tour, but a lot of you mentioned that you’d love to see them again. So, I’m taking the time every morning to choose the cups and photograph them so that you can see them. I know that newer readers might not have seen them before.

Anyway, this is a very busy time for me and I appreciate it when you take the time to leave a comment. Otherwise, I find myself wondering if I’m losing readers or just plain boring you and comments are definitely down since I started this tour. Should I not do these anymore?

To those of you who do take the time to comment, thank you. Normally, this isn’t an issue and I have said many times that you don’t have to worry about commenting, but please remember that this takes time. Once I commit to showing you the egg cups, and there are a lot of them, we are talking about several posts. In fact, I’ll have to take more photos than usual this weekend because I will most likely be working in NYC every day next week, which means I will have to write posts ahead of time.

All this is to say that bloggers or writers on Instagram or Facebook appreciate feedback, especially if they’re doing a series or compiling information for you. It’s free of charge, but it takes a lot of time on our end.

I did a lot of prep work for the play yesterday and will do more today. Then I’ll spend my time on Sunday reviewing everything so I’m ready for work on Monday.

We haven’t heard anything so we’re sure Don did not get the job. He’s very disappointed and down.

Thanks for your positive thoughts, my friends. We never take that for granted.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
