Christmas Around the House

December 20, 2025 at 9:22 am by Claudia

What a crazy day yesterday! Lots and lots of rain (the snow is pretty much gone today) and high winds starting in the early evening and going on all through the night. It’s quiet this morning, thank goodness. And a lot colder. We may get some more snow on Tuesday. It would be nice to have some snow on the ground for Christmas.

I’m trying to honor some of your photo requests. That’s why I posted the dollhouse pictures yesterday. I had another request for another picture of our Christmas tree. Here it is.

A daytime photo. I’m sure I’ll be sharing a few more photos in the coming days, including some closeups of the ornaments.

The little tree in the studio. I think I got this at Target years ago. I had to be in Hartford for the holiday season and I needed some holiday cheer in my apartment.

Santa is on the porch of the Folk Art dollhouse. (Made by Vintage by Crystal.)

The puzzle I started yesterday. You’re thinking: “It’s Christmas time, Claudia, not Easter.”

Yes, you’re right. But I got this puzzle for half off and I love sheep and rabbits and vintage. And I love this image from John Derian. It makes sense now, doesn’t it?

The sun is shining, a very welcome sight.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Mini Christmas

December 19, 2025 at 9:29 am by Claudia

We’re going to be getting high winds today. Oh, yippee. Currently, it’s raining.

So, we’re hanging out inside today. I spent part of yesterday moving outdoor furniture onto the porch and putting the last of the pots back in the shed. Don moved the vintage pots that are in the secret garden to the porch. Having so much snow so early in December threw me off and I didn’t get around to that until now.

Everything is secured.

Today’s holiday photos are of the dollhouses. I really did the bare minimum this year. I add the trees and some presents, but then, because I always display the exterior of the dollhouses instead of the interior, I don’t really see any of the decorations.

Hummingbird Cottage den decorated for the season.

Dove Cottage. Just like life-sized houses, the furniture needs to be moved to accommodate the Christmas tree.

The potted palm has been moved upstairs to the art studio until the tree comes down.

And the Lake House uses a vintage aluminum tree.

Every year, I have to re-glue some of the ornaments. They fall off in the storage boxes.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Still Reeling

December 17, 2025 at 9:10 am by Claudia

Some vintage celluloid reindeer are visiting the Lake House.

I wonder – will anyone let them in?

Temperatures are going to be in the 40s for the next 3 days – a definite warmup – with a lot of rain falling on Friday. I suspect that most of the snow will be gone at the end of that day. I do see some new snow in the forecast for next Tuesday and on Christmas day. I would love to see snow falling on Christmas day. Our local weather guys confirmed what both Don and I knew – this is the coldest December in over 10 years. It’s like we jumped to mid-February at the beginning of December. Very, very cold and lots of snow this year. And it’s not even Winter yet – at least, officially.

We’ve been staying close to home, still reeling from the brutal murder of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, by their son. This, just a week after Jubilant Sykes was murdered by his son. How awful it must be for any parent or sibling to live with a family member who is dealing with addiction and serious mental health challenges. Did the Reiners ever worry about their physical safety? Did Jubilant worry? When do you make the decision that that person is a danger to others, especially when it’s your child? And if that person is legally an adult, how much can you really do? It’s just awful. Gut wrenching,

I know how challenging it was to live with my father’s alcoholism. In that case, the worry was that he might take his own life. He certainly threatened to on many occasions. But even though he had a volatile temper, I never felt that he would harm any of us.

My heart aches for the surviving Reiner children, and the Sykes children.

Don and I search for some moments of comfort: in the beauty of our Christmas tree, in a piece of pumpkin pie, in an old movie, in conversations where we try to make sense of the senseless.

“The world is too much with us.” (Wordsworth)

I speak those words often, increasingly so since January of this year.

Sorry to be serious today and not “Merry, Merry Christmas!” There’s a time and a place. I’ll try to take some photos later  today of a cheery nature.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
