The Pattern and a Party

December 10, 2010 at 1:26 am by Claudia

Happy Friday, everyone! Thanks so much for all the compliments on my garland. By the way, I fully intend to keep it up all year. Yes, it is the Christmas season and those little snowflake/flowers are perfect for the holidays. But I’m now realizing that I made it to grace my home every day of the year.

For those of you new to crochet, let me just say this: I taught myself how to crochet by reading books and, even more valuable, by watching videos on the internet. There are a ton of them out there. I am visual person. Seeing someone actually working with a hook makes a learning to crochet so much easier. Just google ‘crochet and video’ and you will be surprised at the links that appear on your screen.

This little flower is pretty easy. Let me give you the pattern, which is based on this pattern:
—————————
Chain 6 and join with sl stitch to form a ring.

Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 13 dc into a ring. Join the last dc to the first dc with a slip stitch.

Chain 1, turn.

Work a sc into next 2 dc. *Chain 4, sc in next 2 dc. Repeat from * five more times (creating 6 – 4sc loops).

Finish it off by slip stitching into the next stitch and weave the end into the stitches.

——————-

That’s it – easy. sc – single crochet, dc = double crochet. When you see ‘join into a ring’ you do that by slip stitching the last chain on the hook into the first chain you made. I really just went with the pattern for the flower portion of the scarf and figured out how to isolate the flower. In the original pattern, the 13 dc are not joined together. For the purposes of this project, I slip stitched them together. You could make the flower bigger by increasing the amount of dc you start with. Just have fun with it. There’s no right or wrong. I had 7 loops on a couple of my flowers – who cares? It is supposed to look homemade and one-of-a-kind.

Have fun!

Well, it took me half the year to learn to do rows of the basic stitches (single, half double, double, triple) How long do you think it will take me to learn to do “rings” and “flowers”? LOL!!

    Hi Claudia,

Your crochet garland is precious. ♥ Did you just recently teach yourself to crochet?

I taught myself {my left hand} to crochet going on 19 years ago. I have never tired of the process..it’s better than any form of meditation.

I know there are some really good videos out there to watch. I, like you am so visual that seeing things happen makes learning so much simpler.

And I totally agree that your garland is a year around adornment for your home.

Oh how I wish I lived closer and was going with you to the Where Women Cook event. How fun for you!

    I’ll be watching for photos!!

Oh, and it’s BRRRRRR!!!! cold here too.

    Hugs,
    Stephanie ♥

Hi Claudia, that little garland is just the sweetest thing! And I absolutely love the color! Sadly, I am crocheting and knitting challenged, no really, there is a gene blocking that part of my brain. My Irish grandmother tried desperately to teach me to knit – I’m just not wired for it! LOL I’m looking forward to seeing the post about your Chelsea Market outing – we’re heading into the city today with some friends, and baby, it’s cold outside!! Take care my friend and Ciao, bella!

I hear it’s wonderful at Christmas time!).. Thanks for sharing your pattern! I’m pretty sure I will be trying it for my bedroom shelves.. Yours are so pretty! ~tina

Hi Claudia…I have found the videos online for knitting to be very helpful to me as well. When you don’t know anyone to teach you online videos are great! Your crocheted garland is very sweet! Can’t wait to see your trip to NYC! I have been wanting to see the holiday lights there forever and have it on my bucket list!~Hugs, Patti

Pardon the PUN, but it looks like I’ve hooked you. A sweet little teal bird just flew up to my window and told me to let you know you must visit my garden today, as there is something that was left here for you.

    Weekend Wishes,

Oh dear. When I first read those directions I felt as though I must be reading chinese! Ha,ha. I will definitely try my hand at this when all the excitement of upcoming events dies down. Thanks for the suggestion of looking this up online and its encouraging to know you and others have taught themselves. So now I have my first New Year’s resolution. Ann

Thank you so much for offering the pattern for the snowflakes. It looks simple, I might be able to do it : )
I have hardly done my decorating either. I am excited now though, so I hope to get some done each day.
I am planning a new tree with some gorgeous pink and mercury glass ornaments I just found yesterday. I think they have inspired me. Funny how color can do that!

Hi, I am relatively new to your blog (in fact Blogging in general) I love your blog. The pictures are simply comfy and elegant all in one. I too learned to knit from a book but for the life of me I find crochet utterly frustrating so in turn when I see projects like yours a tinge of envy creeps in. The garland looks beautiful. Thanks for the post

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
