Playing With Camera Settings

December 29, 2010 at 1:00 am by Claudia

Achy muscles today from the shoveling extravaganza on Monday. The snow is beautiful but I would prefer a gentle dusting of snow in the future. Just enough to be pretty, but not so much that I must take a day to recover after shoveling it. Please take note, Mother Nature.

I’m playing with the manual settings on my camera – tiptoeing into apertures, shutter speeds and ISO. Though I know the basics, more often than not I rely on the auto setting. If I want a camera upgrade, I figure I should expand my knowledge and capabilities as much as I can with this camera first.

This is the tiniest ornament I own – I’ve had it for years. I’d guess it’s about an inch high.

Playing a little with focus and depth of field.

I just like this one.

Experimenting with White Balance – one version,

And another.

I’ve challenged myself this next year to take more risks and keep learning new things. These are the books that Don gave me for Christmas:

I’m having fun. And I’m not shoveling.

Thank goodness you’re getting a break from the shoveling! Your photos are great. I can really see a difference. I want to learn more about photography also. Blogging kind of does that to a person, doesn’t it?

Did you see Centsational Girl’s recent posts on photography? Her link is centsationalgirl.com. I’m still a little lost after reading it, but I just need to sit down and spend some time absorbing all the lingo and what it is. I need to read that darn camera manual also. I can tell it’s going to take an effort on my part, but once I learn it, I’ll be able to apply it, right? Looks like I have a New Year’s resolution already, eh?!
    Hugs,
    Jill

I love your photos! I decided I’d start playing with my camera features too and am a little lost with all the lingo. Do you like the two books you have?

    Happy New Year!

I need a new camera. My Hubby wanted to buy me one for Xmas. I told him No, because I wanted to do some HW. first. Just couldn’t see just making that leep into something I really don’t know that much about. I’m happy with my Cannon powershot. Not happy with the Zoom factor. Hey, those books look fantastic. Let us know how they are. Happy New Year! xx Liz

Good morning from snowy Frog Hollow Farm! Did I luck out or what, my son is home for the holidays and he was our hired (payment: piles of Christmas cookies and delicious dinners) snow shoveler. FHFB was at the office for it seemed like days – blizzards are like another Christmas for meteorologists! I’m so excited to see your experimentation with photography – my understanding is so very limited and I’m not feeling settled enough these days to take the time to figure out even my little digital camera. Hope your muscles are recovering and that the next snowstorm is a lovely dusting. Ciao, bella!

Love all your photos, Claudia, AND your request to Mother Nature!! We were lucky to only get maybe 6″, give or take.. Still it’s very gloomy, messy, and downright COLD out there right now, so I’m only too happy to stay indoors as best I can for the time being!! Hope you’re able to do the same.. Stay in, stay safe, and stay warm! ~tina

Your photos are looking wonderful, I need to try a bit harder taking better pictures for the blog. I bet the snow is beautiful, if it helps any I had to scrape frost off David’s car windows so he could go to swim practice. And all my plants are dead.

Love your photos. You’re inspiring me. I did get that new camera for Christmas ~ a nice upgrade but still easy to use. The picture of your house in the snow looks like a postcard. Happy New Year.

My gosh you got a lot of snow! We enjoyed the snow we got. I don’t know if I’d feel the same way if we got as much as you! Your cottage looks beautiful in the snow though :)

Once you start to use the AV and TV modes and play with the shutter speeds (the slow shutter speed seems to pick up the lights best on my christmas tree) you’ll never really want to go back to autofocus again. And, hey, it’s digital. Delete. Delete. Save! Delete. You have such an artistic, playful eye, you’ll photographs will be great. Can’t wait to see them!

I’ve spent the past few days climbing up and down on ladders, and boy is my back letting me know it! I think your photos are magnificent. I know I’m too lazy to learn all that technical stuff. So I’ll just rely on Auto!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
