Plop

September 13, 2024 at 9:03 am by Claudia

Heavens, the limelights are gorgeous this year! More pink than we’ve seen in recent years. I love this timing – as the gardens fade and leaves begin to fall, the limelights turn a stunning pink. They take center stage; deservedly so.

Yesterday was the first day since we got our vaccinations on Monday that we felt normal again. It took four days for the swelling to go down and the achey feeling to disappear. To celebrate, we walked at the library (we finally figured out that the distance is a little over a mile.) Then, when we came back home, I decided I needed to mow and I mowed the back forty.

In retrospect, maybe a bit too much. I was tuckered out.

A Don story for you:

He went to our local supermarket on Wednesday. When he arrived back home, I had just finished getting showered and dressed. I came downstairs and he said “I hope you’ll have a sense of humor about this.”

Uh oh.

He proceeded to tell me about his adventure. The supermarket has recently finished extensive renovations, except for the bathrooms. There is a porta potty outside the entrance for shoppers who might have to go. Don almost always has to use the facilities wherever we are. It’s been an eye roll for me since we met. Sure enough, he used the porta potty, He placed his phone in the pocket of his shirt, so as not to have it fall out of the back pocket of his jeans. He did his thing and then decided to pick up some unused toilet paper that had fallen to the floor to leave things relatively neat for the next person to use the facilities.

He heard a plop.

His phone had fallen into the potty, at least four feet down.

Obviously, it was unretrievable.

My sense of humor wasn’t working very well, as all I could see was a bigger phone bill, when the cost of electricity and car insurance and food has already gone up.

I managed to find a cheaper phone on the Verizon site that would work just fine for him and he was able to pick it up at our local Verizon store.

But did I want to gently wring his neck? Yes.

Never a dull moment around here.

I couldn’t stay mad long, though, because a few years back I was in Barnes & Noble and my phone plopped in the toilet. It fell out of the back pocket of my jeans. I retrieved it immediately and there was no damage. (I sprayed hand sanitizer on the phone and on me and wiped all surfaces down – even though the water was clear and I hadn’t yet used the toilet.) I called Don from the parking lot to tell him of my close call. So, in all honesty, I know how easily that can happen.

All is well now.

A thought: one of the most maddening things about Etsy is when you’re trying to sell something and you see that several people have that item in their ‘cart’ but never buy it. I have that right now with two vases. Sigh.

Okay. The tale of the porta potty has reached its conclusion.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

the limelights are beautiful! i’d be tempted to cut a couple to bring in and dry for wintertime enjoyment … but only if they’d stay such gorgeous colors.

glad that you and don have recuperated.

too bad about cellphone(s) dropping into toilets, especially being un-retreivable from a porta-potty. probably happens a lot every day around the world. two family members here bought new cellphones in the past week. costly, of course, but thankfully not due to a “plop”.

good luck with the sales. and the annoyance of cart-sitting.

glad today is friday … no appointments over the weekend. plus a couple college football games that my father is looking forward to on tv tomorrow. earl and the birds have been fed (five doves at the tray feeder right now, along with a couple noisy bluejays waiting for their turn). most other tasks done. i have the sixth sweet “vanderbeekers” book ready to start today and the seventh/last one gets released in paperback by the end of the month and has been ordered.

hope you, don and everyone else have a great day. stay safe.

They dry into a brownish pink. I’ve done that before and I’d rather have fresh flowers.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

Oh no! I bet he was annoyed too. But it definitely happens! Your flowers are beautiful. I just bought some mums (my favorite) and they are gorgeous!

I guess I’m not getting my Covid vaccine this year. I hope to not regret that decision later.

Why aren’t you getting your Covid vaccine? Don’t base that decision on our reactions.

Remember, ours was given at the same time as our flu shot, so most likely it was the flu shot.

      Stay safe.

You gotta laugh or you’ll cry! Don’s mishap makes a good story. These things happen, unfortunately. Your limelights are stunning. I’ve always liked pinks and greens together especially in nature. Enjoy your weekend. Hugs, Elaine

Picking it out of the toilet — doable. Out of the portapotty? Not so sure. Hopefully it was the kind one flushes and not the deep never-ending hole — because I’m getting a visual and it’s not pretty!

      Exactly. Four feet down?? Nope.

      Thanks, Jeanie.

I’ve seen at least one study suggesting that side effects can be intensified when flu/covid vaccines are taken the same day, but another that did not find any convincing link. More work is needed. Betting one won’t get covid to avoid a day or two of side effects may be a very bad bet, the data is very clear on that at least.

I am becoming convinced I need a couple Limelight hydrangeas – this pink is lovely.

We don’t regret getting them together, but might consider getting them a week apart next year. We’ve done that in the past.

      Stay safe, Ceci.

Oh no! I, too, have dropped a cell phone into a toilet. Fortunately it was not a porta-potty. Don thought to put it into a different pocket too…oops!

I’m glad you are finally feeling back to normal after your shots.
    Have a good weekend!

I had to retell your ‘plop’ story to my husband, cuz I just had to. His eyes got wide…and he knew the ending. Someday, hopefully, you will laugh at this….someday. I’m glad you were able to find a replacement for him.

I do love how hydrangeas change. We have about 7 hydrangeas in various locations anround our city lot , and because of where they are planted, they flower and then change colors at different times. So it’s a continuous event from late June through November. I leave the dried flowers up all winter…they add to the landscape. They are such a gorgeous flower!

Hope you don’t have to wait to long til your vases are sold. I can imagine that is frustrating as a seller. Good luck.

Everybody has different reactions to vaccines…happy to hear you and Don are feeling better. Enjoy your evening! ;)

I leave my dried hydrangeas up all winter, too.

We are feeling better. I’m not sure, but this might be the first time we’ve got the flu and covid shots at the same time. There’s no way around it and the new Covid vaxx is not a booster. It’s tackling these new strains.

      Anyway…

      Stay safe, Donnamae

Oh, no, glad the phone in the potty story had a happy ending. As the wise Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, “it’s always something — if it ain’t one thing, it’s another.”

Speaking of which, Dean returned from a conference in Colorado and brought Covid back. The last time he did that, returning from Singapore around 2 yrs ago, I got it too. So, I’m expecting that will be the case again. He tested negative yesterday but positive this morning. Kinda makes you want to swear off traveling altogether.

    Take care,
    Kay

Oh no! I’m going to think positively for you – no Covid!

Traveling would involve masking, I think. We haven’t really traveled at all in quite a while, but this new strain is sure out there.

      Stay safe and well, Kay.

Love the hydrangeas! I’m getting my flu and covid shot Monday and expect I’ll feel puny for a few days. Oh no, what a plop that was. Glad all is well with both of you now.

Poor Don. I think he needs a man purse. I can’t have a phone in a pocket. It always falls out.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
