Potpourri on Saturday

February 4, 2017 at 9:59 am by Claudia

Just because:

You haven’t seen Monty in a long time. He patiently sits on the blue bench, watching, observing, and dare I say, protecting us. We’ve had Monty since shortly after we moved east. We found him in a little shop near the Hudson River.

I love that face.

Can you spot the bluebird in this picture? He’s there.

The mail came yesterday and with it, not one, but two pink hats! One for me and one for Don.

Not especially enamored of large pictures of myself on the blog. But I wanted to share this with you, indeed, I promised  to share it with you. Meredith is the best! I have to say, this is the most comfortable winter hat I’ve ever worn! And that’s saying something.

In fact, I put it on yesterday afternoon (to take this picture) and didn’t take it off until almost bedtime. I love it. I have it on again as I write this because it’s very, very cold out there and the house is freezing! It’s taking forever to warm up. We’re in the middle of a cold snap.

I would have worn pink lipstick, but I don’t have any. Mom would be happy. Happy that I’m wearing the hat with all that it represents, and happy that I’m in pink, as she called me her Pink Bunny when I was a little girl. Pink for you, Mom. Miss you.

The view out our window yesterday evening.

I’m absolutely reveling in the joy of reading A Gentleman in Moscow. Such beautiful, evocative prose! Between this and All the Light We Cannot See, the reading gods have blessed me of late.

We watched The Birds  last night on TCM. I simply love Alfred Hitchcock movies. We both agreed that this was a movie that could have been a tacky mess if the special effects/birds hadn’t looked real. But it isn’t. It’s amazingly powerful, even after seeing it many times.

I’m going to try to get through this weekend in a peaceful manner. That means I’m avoiding, as well as I can, unsettling news. Two day without undue stress isn’t too much to ask is it?

See if you can give yourself that gift as well.

Happy Saturday.

I have given myself that gift the last few days, with just a few glimpses at what I think I should now. It’s been most calming, and is helping me develop some most needed perspective.

I love that pink hat! I’m giving myself a day at home alone. Well just me and Annie (and Mom next door). After watching the sick Grands all week my cough is back. I know I know! So resting all weekend and reading and binge watching a new show I found ‘a place called home’. When I’m too tired to read the tv can be a wonderful getaway with lovely Australian accents and beautiful scenery in this series. No News and no arguments on social media. Just peace for a few days.

Oh no! Now, you take care of yourself! No more coughing! Rest, fluids, petting Annie, reading. No social media. No news. That’s what I’m going to do, as well. xo

I too am avoiding anything negative so I’m going to attempt to deep clean my living and dining rooms today along with some laundry. I have 3 cats worth of hair to get rid of! Cleaning always calms and relaxes me. Namaste!

I have to say The Birds is one of my all time favorite movies. When I flip channels and find it being shown ~ even if it is in the middle ~ I always stop and watch. As much as I LOVE watching and feeding the birds in our yard, this movie does shake me a bit!!

Love the hat and all it represents. The only “news” I plan to watch this weekend is on SNL tonight. Oh, and I want to see the half-time show with Lady G tomorrow eve. I read that “the powers that be” are quite worried she may “be controversial with Trump comments”. But, regardless, I had wanted to see her even before I read that. Don’t care about the game at all.

Hope you have a peaceful day. I have much reading in mind for mine, and that always helps!

It shook me, that’s for sure!

We’re not into the Super Bowl, so we probably won’t watch it. I’ll watch it on YouTube later!

      Take care, Chris.

You and me both, baby! I am cleaning my closets in order to avoid all outside…stuff. Peace and blessings on you both as you enjoy your laid-back weekend.

BTW, I love that you’re following up on “Gentleman” with “All the Light…” such masterpieces! Enjoy—

Lovin’ that pink hat!! Guess we all decided to take the weekend off….it just gets to be more than I can take. I had planned on catching up on housework, laundry….repotting some plants. It’s brighter out today….so the dust is showing…lol! Tomorrow is the big game…Packers are not in it, so I really don’t care. But, I always enjoy the commercials, and with Lady Gaga performing at half time…it should be a fun! Enjoy your weekend…hope it’s a peaceful one for all of us! ;)

I love Hitchcock movies too! Watched “The Birds” last night as well. My favorite Hitch film is probably “Suspicion” because [1] Cary Grant [2] that gorgeous English setting and [3] Cary Grant. A perfectly-named film. First time I watched it I was on the edge of my seat, and now I think I’ve seen it at least 50 times but I always see something new each time. I love your pink hat – great raspberry color! You should wear it indoors if you like – that’s a smart & very healthy thing to do. We lose 60% of our body heat through our heads, so there was a reason why people wore caps indoors in the days before central heating. It’s healthier to keep indoor temps moderate in the cold weather. Houses that are too toasty dry out our throats and nasal passages, making it easier for viruses and bacteria to get into our systems [hence, more colds etc in Winter]. It’s why hospitals pop a cap onto a newborn’s head almost immediately too, to keep them warm. People are better off keeping their houses at 66-68 degrees – tops – and to dress warmly enough to compensate. Little caps for everyone! I’m watching all PBS cooking & travel shows this afternoon to get a break from the ‘OMG-he-did-what-now?’ coverage on the news channels. Have a great weekend. Peace. #Resist 🇺🇸

Oh gosh, I haven’t seen The Birds in ‘forever’ – first time, was with a group of girls in one girl’s family station wagon at the drive-in theater, chaperoned by her mother…I guess we were still in elementary school (‘slumber parties’ – no boys allowed). We saw The Birds back-to-back with Hush-Hush Sweet Charlotte (Bette Davis) and screamed the entire four hours (her poor mom!).

Checking in later here today; must be nearing bedtime out your way. Took your advice; went the long way ’round to the beach today; unplanned. So beautiful after the rain. So restorative. SO glad my husband is home. Glad you’re getting in some sanity-saver reading and I hope you have a nice Sunday!

I forgot to say how pretty (and determinedly fierce!) you look in your pink-p hat!!

Didn’t I read one time somewhere that wearing a hat on the head is a very effective way of staying warm all over? (Never quite cold enough where I live in SoCalif to wear hats, so it’s unfamiliar to me!) Old-time books with illustrations of a guy with a stocking cap on his noggin…kept them warm in cavernous castles, which is what I think I read also was a reason for hanging tapestries on castle walls (cold and damp coming off stone, etc.).

      Anyway, love the hat(s).

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
