Last night’s sunset: the calm before the storm.
After heading directly for the Hudson Valley, it appears that Henri has veered off toward Long Island, so our forecast has changed. We’ll get some wind, but not nearly what was predicted. We willΒ get heavy rains, which really haven’t started yet, but should commence shortly and continue through the day, overnight, and through tomorrow. I imagine we’ll get at least 3 or 4 inches, but who knows? Maybe more. The usual flood watches/warnings are in effect. We have a lot of rivers in the Hudson Valley – we happen to live across the street from one, and just down the street from another. And, of course, there’s the mighty Hudson River.
It will be wet and messy and last a couple of days. Now, we just wait and see.
Sending prayers to all those who are in the path of the storm. I have friends on Long Island and Cape Cod and the coast of Rhode Island and they’re all understandably nervous. Let’s send positive energy their way.
In the meantime, we will have to venture out tomorrow as Don has his eye doctor appointment, which has been delayed at least a month due to the doctor having a family emergency and then, to COVID in the office. His sight has been impacted so there’s no delaying this appointment. We will go.
We’re hanging out at the house today (of course) and I did run out and buy some primer yesterday. So I’ll either be painting Roseville or the dollhouse, depending on my mood. And reading, of course.
Stay safe.
Happy Sunday.

Claudia, reading your posts daily (or as often as you post). Pleased you bought the Beacon Hill to do what makes you happiest, renovating and decorating. Hope you can sell the other one soon. Stay safe on your trip to Don’s eye doctor, and hope his vision issue is resolved quickly. Enjoying your Roseville series, and excited to see your miniature work again.
Hope Mother Nature is kind to everyone on the northeast coast, but know that there are kind individuals everywhere who are willing to help.
Claudia says
His vision issue will never be resolved – it’s macular degeneration. But it can be temporarily restored with an injection to the eye once every 6 weeks or so for the rest of his life.
Thanks so much, Wendy.
Stay safe.

My husband just texted with a relative in coastal Rhode Island; it didn’t get them as badly as they’d feared; definitely wind and rain of course. We’ve got friends who retired to Hampton Beach (coastal New Hampshire) and haven’t heard back; but, you know, they could be out of power although one would’ve thought they’d have charged their phones, so it’s a tad worrying-worrisome. They’d be having a ton of people trying to contact them (hope they still have some ‘juice’ in their phones!), including their grown children in another state.
I know of course how careful you’ll be (brave Claudia at the wheel in a storm; yikes, I’d be such a scaredy cat about it; you’re a warrior!) with doctor’s patient Don as vehicle passenger. You two know your area; you know your weather and roads; you’re a good, experienced driver, Claudia, smart and sensible; you’ve got a terrific ‘new’ car which is in tip-top shape, recently gone over inch by inch in inspection. You are right; stuff with the eyes can’t wait. How troubling for you both, those eyes; I hope Don can get some relief posthaste. Once you get home, you’ve got a good, strong house against this weather.
I’m glad you’re on a ‘rise’ and not in ‘the flats’ for any flooding (where would you likely flood; on the road below your property[?] … with me here on my folks’ property, some fifty-plus years ago, the flooding came from above us, north to south, over our back hillside like a waterfall, then filling up our rear yard til the dads could pry open the gates so the water could flow three-feet high between the houses in the tract, out to the street, I suppose then draining to the river which then went to sea, all in a natural flow with us humans in nature’s way [this is when we got the ‘100-year’ rains, a sort of local joke/’saying’, but it was endless rain over days, weeks, months in a Southern California never seen today).
Once the ‘eye’ appointment is finished, you can just get home and breathe a sigh of relief in the comfort and shelter of the cottage, safe and sound.
With everything going on in the world (it wasn’t lost on me that with Covid raging, Afghanistan humanitarian heartbreak and the danger to coastal dwellers for the hurricane, that a concert in the park seemed a bit ‘fluff’), I guess it feels petty of me to even mention it, but I was kinda disappointed they couldn’t finish the CNN special on TV yesterday (I’m always intrigued with Central Park anyway; sure hope I can see it some day!); was looking forward to Paul Simon and Springsteen. Safety first, though; err on side of caution (I wouldn’t have wanted to be caught out in that lightning over Manhattan, and it’s so dangerous with all that electrical setup onstage).

Thanks so much, Vicki. The river across the street is several feet below my neighbor’s property. And we’re several feet above my neighbor’s property. If it flooded anything it would be my neighbor’s property but I don’t think that’s ever happened. The same river, however, has several areas that are low lying which regularly flood. We’ll try to gauge just how bad it is when we’re out and about later today.
Stay safe.
