If I ever say I’m going to put together a big piece of furniture from IKEA again, please stop me.
It took us over four hours to put that darned desk together and since we started at 4 pm, dinner came late. We were slightly irritable and dehydrated. Crawling around on the floor takes its toll as well…yikes. Scout was more than a bit peeved with us when we finally headed downstairs. She does not like it when we both disappear upstairs for several hours – which hardly ever happens, by the way. She ignored us the rest of the evening. So there, she said.
There’s much to be done, including renting a little storage space, which I’ve been pondering for a while. When I floated the idea to Don, he was immediately on board. We have no attic. We have no usable basement. We have a shed where mice like to hangout. And we have some things we don’t have room for but don’t want to give away or sell. I find myself longing for the kind of storage cage I used to have in one of the apartment buildings I lived in. This will make life much easier for us. My grandmother’s trunk? I will never give it away. But it’s big and it takes up a lot of real estate. Two beautiful wood chairs? Love them. Don’t want to sell them. But right now, we have no room for them. And on it goes.
We’re going to rent a space today…before the ice/sleet/snow hits overnight.
Sneak peek:
I want to say a few thank yous.
To Cindy, a reader of this blog, who sent me this key chain:
A timely message! Hope. Thank you!
And to Kathy, who sent Scout some tasty treats. She included some Hershey’s treats for Don and me, many of which have been consumed already. Thank you!
And also to show you a lovely egg cup that my friends Lynne and Sean sent to me for Christmas:
An adorable bear holding onto a lustreware egg cup with pretty flowers. (Note yet another Scoutie dog hair.) I love it. Bears have been missing from my collection, so this gift is much appreciated. Lynne and Sean live in Toronto – they are longtime friends of ours who we miss a whole lot! Hopefully, we’ll see each other sooner rather than later. Thank you.
The amount of snow that was in the forecast has changed – we’re getting much less. Nevertheless, the sleet and ice that is coming overnight is a bit alarming – especially in terms of our little girl, who has trouble getting around. Stay safe everyone.
Don’t forget to leave a comment on my post, “Sharing a Sweet Moment” where I talk about one of my favorite things: Marie Callender’s Frozen Desserts. If you leave a comment, you might win a $100 Visa Gift Card!
Happy Monday.

I love IKEA things but putting them together is never easy I’m told…I don’t do that part. It’s going to be a great room and useful, I know you will love it. I think putting some very special things in storage is a very good idea. I saw the egg cup on IG and love it. A great addition to your collection. I have decided that I haven’t had my Christmas day yet, it will be Wed. I’ll have the Grands, my girls and sil and my Mom here. A simple time to rejoice and be together. Now I’m off to get Charlie!!! Happy Dance!
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
You are more than entitled to your own Christmas Day, Linda! I hope you and Charlie are cuddling right this minute!

Do be careful when out and about – ice and sleet are much worse than snow!
Yes, know that storage areas are often needed. . . . . . and we cottage gals often lack usable space for hiding our stuff! Just look under our bed and you will find a load of everyday stuff which had to be moved and hidden to allow the Christmas things places to glow for a couple of weeks! I have a real problem down on my knees these days – so no putting together IKEA furniture planned. We did assemble three (love them) of those IKEA rolling carts like yours this year for storing many items in the attic spaces along the sides of the cottage. Bob has this annoying trait of buying in bulk – paper goods, cleaning supplies etc., so we store them there.
Stay safe – we are still awaiting some real Winter weather.
Hugs – Mary
Claudia says
We won’t be going out in this until the rain takes over and the ice is gone. If we had attic spaces, I suppose we might buy in bulk – but no space to store anything! I wish we could…a tip of the hat to Bob!
Dana says
Offsite storage is a fine idea. It will make a very welcome change to rearrange and look at things differently in the house. I like the look of your new things already. Be careful in that weather (I should say it to Scoutie, too). It’s cold, cloudy, and dreary here but only rain is predicted. Like we haven’t had enough already!!
Claudia says
We aren’t going out on the road and we will be right by Scout when she has to do her business!
Barbara W. says
I’m about as good at assembling furniture as I am at jigsaw puzzles, so when my daughter purchased a new desk at IKEA this past summer I was politely told that my help was not required. The actual desk went together quite quickly, but she took her time and drilled holes in the desk drawer to accommodate some vintage hardware she found on Etsy. She wanted to keep her existing dressing table, so changing up the hardware brought it all together.
A storage unit is so helpful! I lucked out with a room in our parkade right beside my parking spaces. So handy for storing items like winter tires and tools that I don’t particularly want upstairs. I hope that you find a reasonably priced one close to home.
Claudia says
We did. And we moved some stuff over there today!
Betsy says
So glad you were able to get your desk together yesterday. One of my least favorite things to do is put furniture together from a box so I understand exactly where you’re coming from Claudia. Be careful with the ice out there today. We got more snow last night…it looks like about 4 inches from inside. That means I need to get busy and get the snowblower out again in a few minutes. I am so over winter! Lovely gifts you received. There are a lot of people out there who love you Claudia.
Blessings, Betsy
Claudia says
The ice will be coming overnight and we plan to hunker down indoors tomorrow You’ve really been hit by snow lately, Betsy! Take care of yourself!
Donnamae says
That’s the only problem with buying furniture at IKEA…diy assembly! My son bought a queen size bed this summer…it was a real bear to put together! I totally get having to rent a space..don’t blame you one bit. Better get to it….the meteorologists said winter storm warning starting at 9:00 am…and it started to snow at 9:00 am! I’m not sure how much snow we’re supposed to get…seems like it depends on which projected map you check out…and then, unfortunately, there will be ice! ;)
Claudia says
Ours is coming tonight, Donnamae and then into the overnight hours. Yuck!
Wendy TC says
I’ve assembled so much IKEA storage furniture,…the toughest parts are lugging those long heavy pieces upstairs and finding room to assemble the piece in the room it’s to go into. I’m glad you’ve finished though and can go on to your next step of clearing out to storage and setting up the space. I’m still decluttering. Tossed some empty cartons I’ve been saving (for what?!?) into the recycling bin this morning just before the garbage pick-up. Will continue to purge into the new year. Hope you get your treasures into storage soon, and careful with that snow and ice.
Claudia says
Exactly! We had to clear a space in the room to assemble the desk.Decluttering and purging will be on the docket for the new year, Wendy.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Oh, the ice scares me a lot. Our entire state (along w/ several neighboring states) are all completely in a Winter Storm Warning. Makes me think they can’t predict exactly what we will get and where it will land. I will take the snow over the ice.
My daughter has a storage unit and she said it is like going shopping w/ her own belongings. She stores things for a while and then changes it out w/ stuff she has been using. Also she doesn’t have to have stuff she just uses once in a while taking up valuable real estate all of the time. Sounds like an excellent plan!! You will now have an Annex to MHC!!
Have a great day…bet Scout is happy everything is put in place so you can be more available and attentive to her!! They do get a bit peeved if they think they are being ignored for any length of time.
Claudia says
I hate ice, Chris. It scares me, too.
Don says we should say we have this property and a little bit of property in the neighboring town…aka the storage unit.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
And it would be perfectly true!!!!
Janet in Rochester says
Love that little copper task light you have. For some reason, I’m very attracted to copper things these days. ??? Maybe I have some sort of nutritional deficiency – LOL. Anyway, I have my online eye on a gorgeous copper bowl right now. Pricey, and not exactly something I need either – but so beautiful. So I go look at it every once in a while. Take care and be safe if you’re going to be out and about once the precip starts… ?
Claudia says
It isn’t copper, though maybe the photo looks that way? It’s silver with brass trim. We will be snug in the house once everything starts, which will be late tonight.
Susie says
Claudia, So glad you have the desk…assembly is usually a two person job. Love the egg cup. The keychain is so sweet. We are like slow moving slugs here today. It’s this crazy wet and cold weather…gray skies, when I am a sunshine lover., can be depressing. Wishing you a better day. Take care, bless you, xoxo,Susie
Claudia says
We’ve had a lot of gray skies lately, Susie, and they get me down, too. I want sun!
Linda @ Itsy Bits And Pieces says
Putting together furniture is hard on the back and the knees! Not my favorite thing to do either. We are just about to get hit with some big snow here…time to hunker in…
Claudia says
We’re doing the same, Linda. Stay safe and warm!
Pat says
Yikes! sleet and ice… I know that all too well. We’ve not had any of that yet…the temperature has been mild up until this weekend. Last night a hail storm, the night before Tornadoes hit the Dallas Metro-plex pretty hard… killing travelers on the interstate. (I’m sure you’ve seen all about it on the news) Tragic.
The desk will be nice when you get the room complete… I agree with Chris K. – storage will be an MHC Annex!
it’s hard putting it all together, and isn’t it always frustrating?
I will certainly remind you of this if ever there is a next time!
I some how think you and Don have learned your lesson, though.
;)
Claudia says
The news from the Dallas area was very sad. Such loss! Heartbreaking.
We’re hunkering down for the onslaught, which will happen overnight.
Melanie says
Most of our downstairs family room furniture – couch, side chairs, console table, and bookcases are from IKEA. Brian put it all together himself. I am terrible at putting anything together…I find it very hard to follow an instruction manual and I have no patience. Good thing Brian doesn’t mind doing this and is pretty good at it, too!
We’re in the midst of the ice storm right now and it’s very frightening. It’s now very cold and dark and Brian is at work, so I keep praying the power stays on. I have a flashlight by my side.
Such lovely gifts you have received!
Claudia says
I’m the one who is better at putting things together. So I lead the way and Don helps! I put together the chair and the lamp and the cart by myself, but the desk was a two person job.
We got that same ice and it’s very slippery out there. We’re staying inside!
Nancy Blue Moon says
I know how awful that put together furniture is…I always hand the box over to my son and tell him “that’s why I had you”..lol…he always laughs and does it for me…it does look good once the misery of building it is over…The key chain and egg cup are just adorable…I have a small storage space too..about a quarter of a mile down the road here…they sure do come in handy when you live in a small house…you will enjoy having the extra space…
Claudia says
We got it yesterday and we’ve already loaded in some pieces. We’re crazily excited about the whole thing!
