Puzzle, Snow, Bluebirds

February 7, 2025 at 9:10 am by Claudia

I finished “The World of Miss Marple” late in the afternoon yesterday.

The artist did a bang-up job of creating Marple’s world. The muted colors give it a period feel. I had fun with this one. You can see Miss Marple in the center. She’s dressed in blue and she’s knitting.

Sigh. We have a major snow event coming Saturday night into Sunday. The forecast says anywhere from 5 to 10 inches. We also have more snow coming next week. I guess February is going to be the month of very wintry weather. Don will get to use the snowblower, though I suspect he’d just as soon not.

We had snow yesterday, just an inch or so, but it was combined with sleet, so it was very icy. We cleared it as best we could. It’s quite windy today and the wind chimes are constantly ringing. But the sun has just emerged, which helps.

This morning, we saw a lot of birds flying around the property. They were very active. The birds that I could see clearly were bluebirds. Normally, I see them – if I see them – right around midwinter, when they are in the process of migrating northward. But last autumn, I saw a LOT of them migrating southward. I’d never seen so many migrating birds of all types on the property. Perhaps we’ve been included in some AAA-type guide that offers information on safe places to stop while traveling? If so, I’m grateful. It was so neat to watch them fly all over the property, silhouetted against the colors of the sunrise.

In the midst of this somewhat bleak midwinter, the visiting birds are a much needed splash of joy.

By the way, I’ve never read any of the Miss Marple mysteries. Who knows why I never got to them? Well, I do – I’m not a big fan of the Cozy Mystery. But, I suspect they’d be a perfect antidote for these stressful days. Have you read them?

Stay safe.

Happy Friday,

I’ve read them all and also watched all the movies and series made from them. I just love her so much! But I’m also a fan of the authors of other mysteries, including Sherlock Holmes and the spin off books of Sherlock Holmes and his wife and their exploits written by Laurie King.

I just realized that I’m not a big fan of the “Cozy Mystery.” But I’ll give the first one – Murder at the Vicarage – a try.

      Thanks, Carol.

I have read quite a lot of Agatha Christie…Hercule Poirot as well as Miss Marple. In fact, these books have led to a lifetime of reading mysteries. I think you should read a few…you might just like them.

Sorry to hear you are going to get slammed with snow. Only an inch or two to fall here…but the cold continues. Yesterday’s winds sounded like a freight train was continually surrounding the house. Too much wind.

You must be on a bird travel route….great for viewing. Enjoy your day! ;)

dear Claudia/Don — sorry re snowstorm–word of caution (from wise old woman) be very careful w/shoveling –work in short sessions–don’t make it a marathon (non stop working) — we had a friend shoveling and he died while doing it — not worth it IMO. Have read a couple of MissMarple books but seems like a lifetime ago. we are supposed to have more “harsh” conditions next week — a bit of everything — Mother Nature has gone crazy!! hope you all keep heat, no frozen pipes with apple pie to eat !!! stay safe, healthy, sane

Oh, we know. That’s why we have a snowblower. I grew up in Michigan, lived in Philadelphia and Boston and now live in NY. I’m very familiar with it! We’re very careful.

      Stay safe.

I’ve read most of the Miss Marples and other Christys and suspect they have not aged terribly well but that’s just me. I don’t usually like the TV shows made from books I’ve read but these have been the exception. So my recommendation would be to try a couple yourself and see what you think! As I recall they didn’t really need to be read in order, which is something I don’t manage to do as I tend to get things from the library when they are available vs showing some self-discipline.

Great puzzle! We are also told that snow is coming, I have a very alarmist weather ap on my phone and of course it’s predicted to shut down the whole area.

    cheers, Ceci

I’ve read almost all of Agatha Christie’s books. I got hooked around the age of 13, we used to live very close to a library and I would visit two or three evenings a week to borrow them as well as buying paperback copies which I still have. They had great covers in the 1970s.

Murder at the Vicarage is okay but try and get from the library, if you can, these Miss Marple mysteries

    The Body in the Library
    The Moving Finger
The Mirror crack’d from side to side
    A Caribbean Mystery

Hope the snow isn’t too much!

I’ve got Murder at the Vicarage on hold at the library. It should tell me whether I want to read more of them.

      Thanks, Dee Dee.

I love the puzzle! I knit, crochet, and read a lot to take my mind off these terrible times in which we find ourselves. I am not a fan of cozy mysteries, so no Miss Marple for me either. Be careful in the snow!

Congrats on getting the puzzle made. It’s a really pretty one. I’ve never read a Ms. Marple. Wow, 5 to 10 more inches of snow! That’s a lot. I appreciate the fake Spring we’re having now. Todays temperature almost 80*F. Have a great weekend and keep warm.

We’re expecting a snow storm tomorrow, too. We need milk but fortunately we have a grocery store within walking distance, about 15 minutes away. I haven’t read any Miss Marple books but admit to enjoying the tv shows based on the books. Enjoy your weekend despite the weather or maybe because of it. Stay safe. Hugs, Elaine

I like cozy mysteries; in fact, I prefer them because they have very little blood and gore. When I outgrew Nancy Drew, I began to read Agatha Christie. I hope you enjoy Murder at the Vicarage, Claudia. I love the puzzle, and I am amazed at how quickly you completed it! And it was so good to hear from Kathy in Iowa. I was so sorry to hear about her father, and I have been missing her comments. She is always so kind and thoughtful.

I’ve read some of the Marples, maybe even all, but most of them were years ago (and by that, I mean decades, the small Penguin paperbacks with type so small that now I have to strain to read one!). A few years ago I reread Murder in the Vicarage and it was quite good but Miss M. doesn’t play much of a role in it (though she does solve it!). I love the look of the puzzle. That artist(s) on that series are very good.

We’re due for snow too — I think tomorrow, which I hope doesn’t mess up Cork Poppers here. It’s been harder getting ready for it with sore body, all-day headaches and no Rick, who has been traveling for work. But they’ll just have to take the house as they get it. It’s the companionship, right? Be careful if you are out there — ice can get under that snow and I’m a little finicky about that these days!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
