Puzzles, Netflix, and Hurricane Ian

September 26, 2022 at 9:01 am by Claudia

It’s going too quickly! I’ve spent a fair amount of time on this puzzle in the past couple of days because it’s such fun. I’m a bit panicked because I don’t have another one on hand. There’s Agatha, sitting on her chair. The puzzle is full of little details and, as always with this particular line of puzzles, I’ll wait until I’m done to read the notes as to the clues scattered throughout the scene.

I hope they come out with a new puzzle soon.

I’m completely engrossed in The Ink Black Heart. I read a chunk of it this morning after I got up. Excellent.

Don and I have been unable to get Netflix on our older Smart TV for some reason. It just stopped the other day and I’ve done everything recommended and it’s still not working. We can get Netflix on our laptops so it’s not due to Netflix being down. I’m now considering getting either Roku or the Amazon Firestick. If any of you have experience with either, will you share how it works for you? I need some advice!

In the meantime, we’ve been watching old episodes of What’s My Line? (from the fifties and sixties) on YouTube. We are thoroughly enjoying them. We’ve traveled back to the days when everything was civil and polite and being educated and knowledgeable was a good thing. We’ve also noticed that everyone who ‘signed in’ on the chalkboard had beautiful penmanship; the days of yore when cursive was taught in the schools. It’s fascinating and we love it. I remember watching it with my parents; also I’ve Got a Secret  and To Tell the Truth.

All of you in the path of Hurricane Ian (including my sister and her family): take care. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday

First I want to thank you and all of your kind readers for their well wishes. Greatly appreciated. Also, thanks for your many good recommendations of books and authors. These have kept me sane—I think.

Fred uses Roku and likes it, but as you know, I am rather technology resistant, so I haven’t bothered to retain any instructions he’s given me for using it, even though it seemed pretty simple when he explained it.

Keeping my fingers crossed that Fred will feel better and be coming home soon.

We live in Palm harbor on the ocean few miles from Tampa. Boys are in school only today. Daughter flying Thursday for my birthday. Probably NOT. Best laid plans…lol…after all her 50 this summer…Covid…my son’s 50 before her Covid…I have lived through so many blizzards and tornadoes and hurricanes…my family I are used to it. That being said, we are being cautious…I will pack up patio…try to teach tomorrow evening and then I will go to the big hurricane house behind me…son and family. I have an in law suite there..this little old condo just might not be safe. After the blizzards of 77 and 78 in Ohio…we are used to these things. I don’t like the dangers though so will do as son says…go to their home…they were evacuated mandatory during Irma but had no damage upon return. Prayers for your family and all in the path. I lived in South Carolina for five years in the 90’s and seems like we had more bad storms there…there has not been a major major hurricane here in 100 years…I kept saying it was time…NANA really…love your puzzle…

Best to be cautious. Meredith seems to take these things in stride, but…

I was down there during a hurricane and I’ve never forgotten it!

I am sure you know this but in case…make sure you are totally out of Netflix on laptop or iPad or computer before getting on tv. Son brought me a new television the other day…I could not get Netflix…I had been watching the crown on iPad…oops…as soon as I made sure I was out…voila…this might not be your problem…I had a roku television but…I like this new LG television with tons of free channels I don’t watch lol…I have Netflix. Hulu. You tube…I am a happy camper…good luck…

We used the Amazon Firestick with a dumb tv for a couple of years and it worked just fine. Suddenly we couldn’t get Prime Video with it, so we thought it was best to break down, and get a smart tv. But, we never had a problem with Netflix and the Firestick. Good luck.

Guess it’s time to get another puzzle….have to avoid the panicked feeling. It’s like getting to the end of the book, and realizing you don’t have another one to read. Eek.

Thinking of all the people in Florida with a hurricane approaching….wishing them well. Enjoy your day! ;)

Many, many years ago John and I were in Hollywood and got tickets to the live filming of Whats My Line. The one I remember was the lady who had posed as the Gerber baby as a young child. It was interesting watching the work it took and the time to make a 30 minute show. It was fun.

Good morning! I love this puzzle line as well. I see I’m behind on their offerings. That book series is great and they do read surprisingly fast. I’m reading The Lincoln Highway. Towles writes such wonderful characters. Thank you for that recommendation.

We use Apple TV Box. Pricey though. A lovely friend who has to a have new Apple everything each year gave us his “old” one. Funny, we had one of our streaming channels go bonkers a while back. Closed everything, restarted, reopened. Nope. One day out of the blue, there it is again. 🙄 technology. Those old shows are fascinating. Good luck with your decision.

We started out with a firestick on our new smart TV last winter. It buffered constantly for long periods of time. A more technically inclined friend said get rid of the firestick, you don’t need it. Most everything we watch is on Utube tv. No buffering on anything. We have Netflix, Hulu and Brit box as well. Got rid of cable. Good luck!

I used to use Roku devices, but had an issue with one that was hot all the time. I did some research and found out it was an inherent characteristic of that particular model. I switched to the Amazon Fire TV sticks a few years ago, (can’t remember if it was during a Black Friday or Prime sale), and have been very satisfied with them. I have Netflix on my Fire stick and have had no issues with it. By the way, for anyone interested you can download the Roku TV channel on the Fire stick.

De-lurking to ask: Have you tried unplugging both the cable box and the router from the power source for 5 to 10 minutes? This has worked for me for issues with Netflix and also with HBO. Once everything is plugged back in it takes a few minutes for everything to reboot. That’s the extent of my technical expertise!

Are the leaves changing yet in your neck of the woods? Just wondering. Started reading The 1619 Project by Nicole Hannah-Jones. Eye opening how little was taught to us in school. Oh well…..we had major storm the other night. Lost lights, tv….internet so read, slept and spent the next morning racking up hundreds of acorns. Does that mean a long cold winter?

I was thinking about Meredith this morning when I was watching news of the hurricane. Such a scary time.

We have Firesticks. They seem to work fine. Once in a while there is buffering, but it doesn’t last long. The (silly) thing that bothers me is that the channel numbers on the Firestick are different than the channel numbers of our cable provider. No big deal. We haven’t given up cable yet, either. We do have Disney+ for the wee one, and Prime and Hulu and Netflix, etc. The Smart TV is good for that. Every so often we realize another channel we have that we didn’t even realize was there. Crazy.

Glad your puzzle is coming along. I feel that way if I don’t have a few books stacked up to read. Take care.

I planned to leave today Tuesday for son family
Am within walking distance but huge house
I live in a tiny tiny condo
Now I am mandatory evacuation anyway
He will come over today and turn off the water
I will put important papers etc in my car…take some clothes
He has a huge garage so my car might fit
I have been through all of this so many times in South Carolina but this looks to maybe be the biggest since 1921
My family is calm and pragmatic. Daughter flight cancelled for my birthday of course…I told her no big deal as we are used to it…
Was up at 3…I am usually up before five…went onto patio…not one bird…there are always birds singing…this happens often…my palm trees are not moving and there is always a breeze…
To determine where I live…think Tampa to my right…about 20 miles… Clearwater is a couple miles south of me…St Pete also…Tarpon Springs couple miles north of me…I am in palm harbor right on the coast…about one half mile south is Dunedin…

Meredith says it’s very, very quiet today – eerily so. I know where you live (not exactly, of course) because I’m very familiar with that area. Very close to my sister’s previous home. Where are you going to go, Brenda?

My older nephews live in evacuation zones, so they’ve had to leave as well. One is going to North Carolina, the other is staying with my sister.

      Be safe, my friend.

Our Smart TV became Stupid TV quite quickly after we purchased it. It’s a Samsung and I scoured the internet researching problems and it seems it’s not uncommon. Basically, the wifi just stops working on it and it needs a part but not easy of course, but of course it means none of the apps work. Not a road I could be bothered to go down. So I got the Firestick (worried it wouldn’t work because of wifi problem), but it worked well and of course with the Firestick you get all the apps (ie Prime, Netflix etc). TV is now about 8 years old. We quietly keep wishing it would conk out so we could upgrade, but until then I’ll be keeping it as I hate to throw anything into the world dump. I say get the Firestick!

I meant to tell you in the other comment how much I love the finished puzzle. Bravo! Well done.

I wasn’t sure where Mere lived in FL but have been thinking of all the people there who are in for a big one.

I love my Roku. I don’t have a lot on it yet — mostly the free stuff and Acorn. I keep saying I’m dropping the cable but have to round up all the equipment and just haven’t been home enough for any length of time to do it. I was actually kind of glad because I got to see all the things about the Queen on cable but it’s expensive. I figured I could land two or three streaming services and still be ahead. But if you have a library card you can get free Kanopy, which is fascinating and watch netflix and other things through it. Also, many free stations. For about $30 you can’t go wrong.
