Rain, Sleep Deprived, & Egg Cups

April 3, 2024 at 7:52 am by Claudia

Rain. Rain. Rain.

And a not-so-restful night as both Don and I kept waking up all night long, knowing he had the alarm set for 4:30ish this morning. That always seems to happen. Your body anticipates an early wake-up call and your mind worries you’ll somehow not hear the alarm. I felt okay when I first got up, but now, after being up for 2 ½ hours, the lack of sleep is hitting me. Don went into the city on Monday for a fitting and it turns out  he worked with one of the guys who will be in the scene with him on Rescue Me, so they had a chance to catch up.

As it’s so rainy, I haven’t had a chance to do much outside, though I did start digging up an invasive plant that has taken hold in the poor and gravelly soil near the house. I have much more to go, but that will have to wait until the weekend.

New York’s Presidential Primary was yesterday, so we voted – of course. I even have the sticker to prove it.

Lily and Pru. They hang out together on the edge of the shelf.

I haven’t been able to get hold of the woman from France who collects the egg cups that I love, so I’m just going to post a partial photo. She goes by the name, Ch Baralle. I want to make sure she gets photo credit.

You can see several diabolo egg cups here, as well as traditional double and single egg cups. I love this kind of design, seen frequently on the French version of ironstone and china.

I want them all. But they’re not easy to find and I’d probably have to order from France, which involves a sometimes heavy shipping fee. I love the way she has displayed them – in tea boxes. She’s removed the lids.

I feel that little tingle I get when I’m about to dive down the rabbit hole. I know it far too well.

All right. Maybe I’ll start a puzzle, as my brain is sleep deprived and needs something simple to do, like finding the edge pieces.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

thinking about how your day and don’s day must be going after such a short night. hope you get a nap in and maybe some gardening, too, along with the puzzle, that all goes well on the job and travels there and home for don, that he has lots of fun doing that work and reconnecting with a friend/previous co-star and that this job will lead to as much work as wanted for don and you!

ch baralle did a great job displaying all those beautiful egg cups! i can see why you like them so much. go for it and have fun going down that “rabbit hole” of new egg cups. may you find a bunch easily available to you!

    also, thank you for voting.

can i vent a little? we had two appointments for workers to come into my parents’ townhome on monday to check on work done previously to add insulation and prevent leaks in the attic (a crawlspace, really) and re-fix the cable tv service … things done at most, if not all, of the 34 other townhomes. both reportedly had to do with faulty equipment/supplies installed during the worst of covid. the cable tv situation has been the worst … other providers have recently been burying cables here for their own services and apparently nicking the cables needed for the providers chosen by my father and other townhome owners, and a “first in the country” installation of some high-speed internet cables knocking out cable tv service (enough that we’ve made more than 90 calls in six months … basically every other day for six months … for lack of service and had more than twelve technicians out, gone as much as ten days in a row without cable … which is a privilege to have in the first place, i know … because the installation was incomplete, the cable box they brought was incorrect or broken, the service providers were waiting to get approval from the townhome association on where to dig, etc.). ugh. for both of monday’s appointments, a closet needed to be emptied, the sentimental/valuable/private paperwork, etc. removed from the computer room and a bedroom so the workers could work and we then didn’t have to worry about them snooping or stealing (unfortunately my family has had that experience before, more than once, and i have, too, as a renter and so are very cautious when workers have to come inside our homes … ugh again). anyway, i hope that’s it for such appointments, any appointments and that everything is truly fixed and stays that way. i am tired.

on a happier note, there are no appointments for the rest of this week, earl and the birds are fed today and i finished “war and peace” last saturday. now (before i let myself read “a gentleman in moscow”) i am checking definitions for words i didn’t know in “war and peace” … probably over 400 of them (just when i was feeling pretty good about usually getting nine or ten out of ten words correct on an online vocabulary test that i’ve been playing nearly every day for several months … haha). and there are leftovers ready for lunch … no cooking today. :)

hope you, don and everyone else are having a great, easy day, too. stay safe!

    xo,
    kathy

No gardening today! It’s been a heavy downpour all day long. Congratulations on finishing War and Peace!

Very frustrating waiting for repairs and all that they entail. I understand.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

        thanks, claudia.

after six months of cable problems and 90 phone calls (yep, we kept track), we thought it was resolved … then they had to come back on monday. that is what is so tiring for me, when things don’t get fixed. otherwise i was happy to have both in-house appointments on the same day to get them over with sooner. anyway, it’s done and i am glad about that.

“war and peace” was wonderful. brilliant writing. some was hard to read, but the stories will stick with me and i am keeping that book (though it’s on offer to family members … my oldest niece especially loves historical fiction). and i am finished with looking up definitions for about 400 words … yay to that, too!

hope you are having a good day and that the rain has stopped.

        stay safe!

        xo,
        kathy

I’m excited about Don’s upcoming work. When it airs you will have to tell us! And those egg cups — wow! Now THAT is a collection and a fabulous one.

It’s a very small part, so he probably won’t want me to share anything with you. We’ll see.

      Thanks so much, Jeanie.

I know the feeling of anticipating an alarm. Almost every day, I wake up before my alarm goes off and I turn it off. Fortunately, I don’t fall deep into sleep again. More likely than not, I just get up. There’s always a task to do that will occupy the time.

What a collection of French egg cups. Who knew egg cups would be so collectible! They are charming though. Hope you find some reasonably priced so shipping can be offset.

We’re in for a couple of days of rain after a few days of absolutely glorious weather, albeit cooler than what I prefer.

Continuing my purge/decluttering today. I think I’ll know when to stop when I can actually see the dent in my accumulation. Though, I know I’m hauling a lot out since I’ve made a lot of trips to the thrift store recently, with full carloads. And, I’m particularly cognizant of NOT going into said shops to “look around”. I think I can’t see my efforts because almost everything I’ve cleaned out had been behind closed doors (closet, cabinets, garage).

Enjoy your puzzle. I’ve put about 1/3 of ours in the donation pile. And hurray for Don and the acting job.

I’m going to be donating all of my puzzles, as I have no need for them once I’ve finished putting them together. So far, I’ve contacted 2 places and they’ve never called me back. Very frustrating. They’re taking up all of my trunk space!

      Stay safe, Wendy.

It seems like a senior center could like the puzzles; or maybe an assisted-living place that has a game room. When I was a volunteer driver for Meals On Wheels, I delivered several of the meals to seniors on reduced income at a large apartment complex who would get a lot of camaraderie going on in their games-crafts-playroom by doing puzzles. They’d frame some of the best ones, so the completed puzzles would hang on the walls of the room, and in the hallways, as favorite art.

Don’t know if today’s kids could settle down to a for-real jigsaw puzzle that’s not on a phone or tablet, but if you have a Boys and Girls Club, I’d think that would be a possibility, too. But sounds like you’ve explored options. I think it’s really nice that you donate them, Claudia!

I guess you could always drop off the puzzle boxes to Goodwill or the like; people might want to buy some affordable stuff to keep kids and themselves occupied with summer projects ahead. Is great to take a puzzle to the beach house or lake house to wile away the lazy/relaxing hours (if you’re a person lucky enough to get to do that!).

Would your local library take them? I feel like I recall our community library selling books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, board games; it’s how Friends of The Library makes some decent cash which then goes back into purchases needed for the library for all.

I’ve tried all of those things. Senior center hasn’t got back to me – the closest Goodwill to us only takes clothing. Our library is too small.

          Ah, well.

Ch Barelle has quite the collection of egg cups….I can see why you are thinking of going down that rabbit hole. They are beautiful. Hopefully you can find some in this country, to save on shipping costs. Thanks for sharing the pic. Enjoy your day! ;)

Hope you’ve caught up on some of your sleep; isn’t it the worst, when our sleep is poor.

That’s a heckuva lot of egg cups in those tea boxes; does she have to dust all those? There’s no glass ‘door’ like you’ve got on your egg cabinet, right?

Little Lily; she speaks to me; so winsome. It’s a perfect name for her.

I’ve been waiting for the time I don’t wake up long before the alarm goes off at 5:30am to make sure my husband gets up out of bed and on the road for his job. A couple of months later, I’m still doing it. Sleep deprivation on the part of both of us lives in our house. I get pretty worried about it. If we weren’t doing a whole lot, I’d be less worried. But he’s doing hard, physical work all day long at the workplace and, as I like to say and wish I didn’t have to, he ain’t no spring chicken. We try to catch up sleep on his days off but it’s really not possible; just never happens. I’m realizing it might come to pass that he can’t keep this job and may have to find something different, and I’m ready to roll with whatever he wants to do. I think he bit off more than he can chew, or so they say.

Your husband is such a good guy, taking on that job. But if it’s not for the best, I hope he finds something better.

      Stay safe, Vicki.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
