Reunited

For those of us who grew up in Michigan, Vernors Ginger Ale was an everyday part of our lives. This was the ginger ale I knew and loved. If any of us were sick, Mom gave us some ginger ale to calm our stomachs. When I went to visit my Grandma, we had Boston Coolers – Vernors and vanilla ice cream.

Vernors originated in Detroit. A concoction of ginger, vanilla and other ingredients, originally aged in oak barrels, it has a very different taste than any other ginger ale. If you’ve grown up drinking Vernors, nothing else will do. Canada Dry? Yuck. Vernors remains a regional favorite. When I moved to Philadelphia and Boston, I had to give up my Vernors. Every once in a while in San Diego, I would discover it in some specialty store. When my parents visited, I managed to get a hold of some and my Dad introduced Don to Boston Coolers. I had one friend who, after moving to Ithaca NY, would buy cases of Vernors when he was visiting back home, take it back to Ithaca and store it in the bathtub.

The other day I was at rehearsal and I saw an empty Vernors can. On the Stage Manager’s table. I did a double take. Then I proceeded to interrogate everyone in sight. Where did they get this? Who carries it? My mission was clear. Find Vernors.

I did. Clearly Wisconsonites have good taste. I love this stuff. I’m happy.

Now… how to get it regularly shipped to my cottage?

I missed most of the craziness of Blogger being down. It wasn’t until late this morning that I realized that something was wrong. That’s one of the perks of being so busy, I guess. I did lose some comments from my Wednesday post, which is annoying. But I know some of you lost posts and that’s unfortunate.

Have a good weekend! I’ll be working.

Claudia, I was born in Hillsdale Michigan….Vernors is the only ginger ale I like too. Fortunately, some wise person transported it to Arizona a long time ago. I have never had to go without it.

I am one that lost an entry. They said that they were going to try to put them back. So far no luck. I am still keeping fingers crossed.

This former Wisconsin girl never heard of Vernors, but I love ginger ale, so you can bet I’m going to look for some now! Thanks for the recommendation. xoxo Donna

Hello fellow Michigander! I too, grew up with Vernors. And you are so right, no other ginger ale will do!
I remember visiting the Vernors plant when I was little with my Grandfather. I loved Vernors ice cream and we made Vernors floats with it too. I buy mine now at Krogers.
Glad you could find another treat for yourself!
    Hugs,
    Terri

I love ginger ale, so I’m going to try and find some Verners! I grew up on Canada Dry and didn’t know what the “real stuff” tasted like until I tried some (name I can’t remember) ginger ale in a bottle last year. What a difference!!!

Re: Blogger…I lost my last post, but it was recovered. The comments, however, were not. Sure was strange being “disconnected” from Bloglandia…

    Hugs,
    Jill

I love Vernors too. I’m from Michigan, but now live outside of Boston. We found Groceries Express delivers in many combinations. They’re in Madison Heights, MI and have a website. Very reliable. http://www.thevernorsstore.com

    Hi Claudia,
I have a salad dressing I love in Florida that I cannot find here in Washington State. My husband is there on business right now and he is on a mission to find a few bottles to bring back. Funny how your blog posting was about finding something in another State that you love. I hope you have a wonderful day and weekend. xoxo Kim

    Hi Girlfriend,

Sounds like you’re having a great time in cheeseville! I’ve heard of Vernors, but have never tried it. I’ll have to give it a go when I run into it. Enjoy your weekend!

Well, I’m so glad you’ve been “reunited” with an old favorite, Claudia! Yeah, I lost my WWF post. Don’t know if I’ll get it back. Yes, Blog Land was all abuzz over the horror of Blogger being down for two days and counting.

Vernors, I forgot about that! I lived in Michigan from jr. high through college! It also took me a while to stop saying “POP”, which is “SODA” on the East coast! My other favorite was Faygo-red pop! Ahhhh, the good ole days!

Hi Claudia, Just discovered your blog tonight and I love your space! I found you while visiting one of my favorite blogging friends “Bluebirds and Butterflies” space. Boy can I relate to Vernors! It’s the best! Canada Dry ginger ale pales in comparison. I’ve also had my share of delicious Boston Coolers! Every time we visit our son and grandchildren in Delaware we have to take a case of Vernors with us! I’ll be back to visit for sure!

    Hi Claudia… :-)

Oh my gosh…. My parents were both from Redford, outside Detroit, and Vernor’s was a family favorite. Every time someone “went home” they brought back both Vernor’s AND Saunder’s Hot Fudge…. Mmmmmmmmm…….is that some yummy stuff! My Mum always talked about the little soda fountain in their neighborhood where they’d go have a Saunder’s Hot Fudge Sundae…. made in a cream puff. I’ve had a few of those myself.

If you’ll email me your address… I have a little pressie for you… I found a perfect little item while I was on my thrifting hunt. :-)

    Huggies to you!

    Spencer

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
