Well.
I don’t mind telling you it’s been a little tough around here.
And I don’t mean just lately.
You see, my parents keep coming and going and it drives me nuts.
First my dad went away for a long time starting last December. He wasn’t even here for Christmas. (That’s when I like to sniff our Christmas tree. I like that smell.) Then Mom went away and ‘boarded’ me at the Vets for two days. I hated it. When Mom picked me up she saw that I had been chewing on my leg. I did it because I felt scared and I didn’t understand why I was there. So she told me she would never do that again. The next time she went away, I got to go along and stay in an apartment and walk in the park and see other dogs and ride in an elevator. That was fun!
Then Dad came back home for a while. Then he left again for some place called Prague. Dad and Mom were all excited about it, but I wasn’t. Cause he was going away again. Then he came back. For a few weeks everything was cool, the pack was back together and I was happy.
Then Mom went away. For a long time. Then she came back and for about a month we were all back together. Yay! Then, you guessed it, Dad went away. Then – get this – he came back and we were all together for one day and Mom left again. This time she was gone a long time.
I don’t like this stuff. I miss them. I want my mom and dad here all the time. Heck, I don’t even like it when they leave for a few hours. We’re a pack, darn it! Don’t they understand that? Oh yeah, there’s all sorts of “I’ll be right back. I’m only going away because I have to.” “Mommy’s working, honey.” “Daddy loves you, but he has to go away for a while.” Blah, blah, blah.
That means nothing to me. If you love me, stay the heck home.
Then, to top it all off, my mom finally comes home, she walks in the door, I’m happy to see her, I walk over to her, she hugs me and suddenly she’s shouting to my dad that something’s wrong and we have to go see the doctor – now!
What the heck?
Then, there I am at the doctor’s again, I’m poked and prodded and mom and dad are worried and the doctor says I have to have something done to me. And I’m staying at the Vet’s in a cage (which I do not like – I had to do that last year when I had something called Lyme Disease) and I’m groggy and I can barely walk and they keep poking and prodding me. Mom and Dad finally come to get me and I’m home a few hours and suddenly they take me back to the doctor’s where I spend the night. Again. Something about bleeding. Then the doctor gives me a pill that makes me feel totally out of it. For a long time. Then I’m home again.
So now, I’m the one coming and going. And Mom and Dad want me back home. Cause we’re a pack.
I didn’t feel good for a long time.
Mom and Dad had to lift me to go down the stairs or in the car. I didn’t want to eat. I was real thirsty and kept drinking water. I was breathing funny.
Mom gets worried, you know. She watches every move I make and talks to my Dad about me a lot. She called the doctor a few times to talk about me.
Dad tells her not to worry. But she does.
Oh, and my butt was shaved. Mom said I looked like a baboon. Thanks for nothing, Mom.
But I’m tough. I started feeling better last Wednesday. I started eating again and I was real hungry because I hadn’t eaten in four days. I had a lot of catching up to do. I got to have my ‘treats’ again.
I’m barking again. I’m pouncing. I’m jumping up on the sofa. I’m in ‘The Tunnel.’ That makes Mom happy.
I’m cool.
But enough already. I think the three of us need to stay in the same place now.
Mom tells me that all of you were praying for me. She says I should thank you. So, thank you.
You are nice people. I like you.
You can come visit if you want to. I like attention. I like people.
Say hi to all my dog and cat friends out there.
I’ve got a message for them: Do your parents come and go like mine? Let’s talk.
Now I’m going back to sleep.
Have a nice Thursday.

I sent this to you via email on Monday, but I don’t think it went through so here it is again.
I have to tell you that I read your post most every day, but I was gone to Colorado for a wedding (my lovely niece Megan and her Ben) so I missed so much about Scout, but I am delighted that she is rebounding. It is the hardest thing to deal with your pets being ill. I know because I went through this same thing with a beloved dog many years ago, and there have been many vet visits and sleepless nights since then with other pets. I have been on an acreage for 23 years and every one of my critters is my beloved little soul down to every little chicken. Anyway, good to hear Miss Scout is on the mend.
While in Colorado, I asked if there was an Anthropologie and my nephew said there was, but the mall was on the opposite end of where we were and time constraints did not allow us to travel there. My sister then told me there was one in Omaha. I am in a rural setting between Omaha and Lincoln. Well, she picked me up yesterday afternoon and off we went to Omaha. Oh, I love that store. Love it…and I bought two mugs. One for home and one for work. I bought the red handled one like your teal wiith the flowers in the bottom. I have one set of dishes that are red pottery and it matches perfectly. May have to go back for more. Then I also bought the twisted handled one. The handle is yellow with purple dots on the bottom and yellow/orange, blue and pink flowers. I took pictures with my iphone, but can’t figure out how to download. I need to get a camera like yours. Next month it will be on my list.
Thanks for a fun, informative blog and again, delighted Scout is doing well. Love your morning glories. They were my husband’s favorite. Cindy
Claudia says
CIndy, so glad you found some of the mugs/cups from Anthropologie! I know exactly how the yellow one looks. I remember seeing that one. Thanks for all the compliments on the blog. xo Claudia
Hi Cindy, I’m glad you like animals – thanks for writing.

Tina says
Hey, Scout, Louis here. Noble and Tina’s cat (hope that’s okay with you). Boy, you nailed it! Same thing goes on here. Back and forth. Can’t they stay in one place? Sheesh! I have a nice lady Ant Shannon who takes care of me when they are gone. I call her Ant because when she takes care of me all these ants show up around my water bowl. Last year was bad for me, too. First my brother Fluffy went away and never came back, Then my mom’s mom did the same thing. Then my mom left for a really long time . . . more than once. And then my mom went away for 30 meals and I thought maybe she was in the strange place with Fluffy and her mom. But she came back and when she did, she put down her bags and picked me up and took me to the vets right then, Not even a hello! Then she’s sticking needles in me to fill me with water. I look like a blimp. But it looks like she’s here for a while but I miss my dad. Hang in there, my friend.
Claudia says
Hi Louis,
I see you have been through the same sort of thing! I lost my brother Riley last year – he went away and never came back, so I understand how you feel. My mom knows your dad and mom and she knows your dad is away a lot doing the same kind of thing my mom and dad do. It’s really hard, isn’t it? I know your mom had to be away for a long time and then, to top it all off, she took you to the Vet right away. Just like my mom! I’m glad your mom is home now, but my mom tells me your dad will be away for a while. But he loves you, just like your mom does.

Linda @ A La Carte says
Scout we all are so glad that you are feeling better and are home!! Charlie the cat can relate to this coming and going stuff. He even stays here ALONE and hates it! Now he does get regular visits from family and Tiger loves to chase him, but there is no one like Mama! So he has been ‘sitting’ on me a lot hoping it keeps me here! Oh and Scout, I can tell you that your Mom and Dad did worry about you a lot because they LOVE you so much!
Big hugs,
Linda and Charlie
Claudia says
I don’t like staying alone either, Charlie. But since you’re a cat, you are somehow more able to handle it than a dog is. At least that’s what my mom tells me.
Sending my hugs to you, Charlie, and to your mom.

Patty, I don’t mean to be difficult….but I’m a girl!! I think people think I’m a guy because of my name. But I’m named after Scout, the little girl in To Kill a Mockingbird. When my dad first saw me (my parents rescued me) he said “She’s such a girl!”
And I am.

Hi Scout, I know exactly how you feel about the pack being split up! My dad is away often and them I’m stuck here with mom–she is tough and enforces all the rules. But the worst is that my fellow pups are never here either! They went away to “college” and I’ve been to see them, but we always leave them behind. Then mom cries a little in the car. Then I put my head on her lap and she feels better. And this shaving bit!! I have had the pleasure too although not on my bottom! I hope your pack can stay together for awhile now. Those are the best times! Love, Nellie
Claudia says
Hi Nellie!
I’m glad you understand! Having your dad away isn’t fun. And I’m sorry you have to leave the puppies. Will they be coming home soon?

Scout!! So HAPPY to know you are feeling better! I worry about my fur babies too when they don’t feel good so I know how your mommy felt. Bear, Billy and Sophie have a few words for you….”Hey Scout!! Our mom goes away to a place called “Texas” to see her “grandchildren” a few times a year. Once she stayed 23 days to babysit Cayden because their regular babysitter had her baby early and Cayden’s mommy and daddy had to work. We sure miss her when she’s gone and we won’t eat for a few days because we’re sad. Mom calls us on Facetime and that helps because we know she misses us and worries about us the whole time she’s gone. Twice a year when Mom comes home, Dad goes to “Florida.” Guess we have a house down there he needs to check on. We miss him but not anything like how we miss our mom! Keep getting better, mom prayed every night for you when she found out you were sick. Sniff any good trees lately?”
Claudia says
Hi, Bear, Billy and Sophie!
I don’t like to eat when my mom’s away, either! I miss my dad a lot, but mom feeds me and talks to me and…well, she’s my mom. Thank your mom for praying for me. I’m glad you understand how hard it is when mom or dad is away.
Yes, I’ve sniffed some good trees and the leaves in my corral are very interesting – I like sniffing them.

Deb says
Hi Scout – my name is Lolo. I’m my mom, dad and brother’s new doggie. I have been in my new home for over 2 months now. I am almost 4 months old and I’m a beagle. Mom always wanted a dog her entire life – and she had so much crazy (both good and bad) things happen over the summer that she and my brother decided that they just HAD to bring me home. She kept on saying that life is just too short to not want something (ME!) and not get it!
I am a very happy puppy – but I know when I first got home I was pretty sick. My mom was so worried those first couple of weeks – she kept on calling and taking me to the vet. I even had to have an IV one Saturday morning – nothing like having a big bubble on my back! I’m so much better now – and I’m so happy to hear you are feeling better too.
I can tell I make my mommy feel very happy most of the time – and it sounds like you make your mommy and daddy happy too. They are so lucky to have us! :) Have a good day Scout. Look forward to reading more about your adventures.
Lolo
Claudia says
Hi Lolo!
I’m glad you have a home with Deb and her family. That makes me happy. (My mom always goes gaga over beagles. She has a soft spot for them.) I’ve had that bubble on my back before, Lolo. The good thing is that it goes away pretty fast. Thank you for writing to me.

Scout…I’m so glad you are finally telling your side of the story! Notmally, we only get your mom’s version, so it’s nice to hear about your feelings. I’m so thankful you are feeling better…you look really chipper in that first pic! And, are you howling in the other one? So cute! Mom’s do tend to worry a bit much, I’m guilty of that all the time and my kids are grown men! So be patient with mom and dad…they are doing their best. I’m glad the pack is back too! ;)
Claudia says
Well, sometimes, I have to tell my side of things, Donna. I see things a bit differently than mom and dad. Yes, I like to howl at times. I have to be ‘urged’ to by my mom. But then I’m happy she urged me to because it feels good. Thanks for writing, Donna.

Hello Scout, let me introduce myself, my name is Munchen I am a weenie dog. My mom writes the blog Pine Cones and Acorns which she loves and every time we go for a walk we come home with a pile of both but that is a story for another day.
I have much the same problem as you, my mom has always worked from home and then about three years ago my dad started to do the same. How wonderful it is to have to whole pack together to work and play or nap all day! Sadly my parents travel for work sometimes but thankfully it is not often and when they do my NANA takes care of me or I go to “camp.”
I think it is wonderful that your parents love you so much! I am happy that you are all back together and that you can jump in the leaves your mom has been raking and take in the beautiful Fall weather while laying on your porch.
Have a great day!
Munchen
Claudia says
Hi Munchen!
I used to love two of the weenie dogs that lived in our neighborhood in San Diego. I couldn’t stop myself when I saw them. I sniffed them and wanted to play. I’m sorry you have to deal with parents being away. It’s hard, isn’t it?
I watched mom rake leaves the other day from my spot on the porch. Then I got bored and started to bark and mom asked me to stop and I didn’t, so I had to go inside.

You look great in your photos. Glad you are feeling much better. Enjoy this nice weather.

Hi Scout,
We are so glad you are feel better. Our Momma said you were sick and said prayers for you. We know about being sick and injured. Our Daddy was pretending to be a cat and fell off our roof. Momma said he broke his leg in 4 places and had to stay at the “people vet hospital” for a month ! Momma took videos of us for Daddy to watch. We liked that cuz we acted silly and it made Momma laugh. While Daddy was gone she cried ALOT and it made us sad. But guess what? Just like you, our Daddy is home and better !!!!!! We sleep with him and ride on his on his lap in the wheel chair (scary stuff)
Scout, don’t try to act like a cat by climbing on the roof ! Make sure you Mom & Dad don’t do this either. Leave that to us pros.
Love and kittie kisses,

Hi, Scout. This is Molly. Odette is my cat mom. My real mom and dad left, too. I had to go stay at Aunt Paula’s house, but she couldn’t let me play with her other cats because I don’t have any claws. So she took me on a long drive to Florida, and now I have a new mom and dad. So, anyway, I want to ask you if you’d teach me to sing, like in that second picture of you. My mom doesn’t like my Siamese singing, so I was hoping for some lessons. Glad you have your pack back together!
Lots of licks,
Molly
Claudia says
Hi Molly,
Yes, I can teach you to sing. I’m pretty good at it. I like it when mom plays the piano and my dad plays the guitar. They both sing a lot too. I bet your Siamese singing is pretty cool! I don’t think I can sound like a Siamese cat. Darn!

I have only been to the doctaor once and spent the night. Did not like it. seems like something was missing when I got home. I did go for a couple of walks when the door was left ajar and she did not come find me. I rode in the white truck to a place called PAWS and they called her, She came right away and picked me up. She was so glad to see me, but she said she would like to shake me I had scared her so much! Go figure.

Oooh, a treat? That’s cool! Oh boy, you took a walk? That’s pretty daring. I’m glad those PAWS people found you and told your mom. My mom would be mad, too. I’m glad you are feeling better and I really hope your mom and dad stay home for awhile. I don’t like it when my people leave either. When they do, I spend a lot of time in my favorite corner over behind my mom’s tea table. I feel safe there and can keep an eye on things. At least when they leave they give me little treats in a thing called a kong toy. It distracts me for little while as I try to figure out how to get those little yummy things out of there. I am so excited when everyone comes home, I always get the wiggles. You keep taking it easy! I wish you lots of treats, and pets, and ear rubs. ~Millie
P.S. I love your nice long legs. I’m a Cardigan Corgi and am a little vertically challenged. :)

But I bet it’s easier to pick you up, Millie. I think I’m a lap dog but my mom and dad tell me I’m not really. I have a Kong toy but I never got the hang of it. Mom tried to hide treats in it and peanut butter, but I never took to it. You have a pretty name, Camellia Rose. Thanks for writing!

Dear Scout, so happy to have mom read me your blog today! You should really get your own now that your mom is home and she can type it daily for you! ha ha! She isn’t up to much now a days, right? That way you could spend more bonding time together! I’ve only lived here since January when mom found me at the shelter one day. I impressed her alot, so she came back w/her daughter and she fell in love w/me too. I love it here. I don’t think I’d ever seen cats or a horse and I dug holes, oh my, was that fun. Now I don’t do that so much anymore, got that out of my system! But I have seizures, and I don’t think the shelter knew about them either, so mom and Megan have had to deal w/me when I have one and I know it scares them a lot. But Megan handles me just fine. They hauled me off to a new vet too, nicest guy, and he reassured them they are doing the right thing w/me. Thankfully I don’t have them often, just enough to scare the heck out of them! Mom said she asked your mom if you could blog one day and now she’s so happy to see you back on! You take care and just enjoy the tunnel! Your new GF, Ella, the beautiful brown lab!
Claudia says
Mom says no to my own blog, Annette. Something about there only being so many hours in the day.

Dear Friend Scout,
Our Mommy let us read your post/letter, and we were so doggone happy to hear you are feeling better!! You had us worried there for a while girlfriend.
We know exactly what you mean – we get dog-bone weary because Mommy and Daddy leave a lot. They tell us they have to ‘go to work’ so they can buy us our kibbles. We try to understand, but we still get sad and lonely for them during the day. Of course, we have each other here during the day – and Daddy comes in and out during the days – so it really isn’t too bad…we guess.
Our favorite time of day also is when we know Mommy will come through the door and we know that means everyone is home for the night!
We sit in the entry hall and wait for her – starting about an hour before she actually gets home – Daddy says we are clocks – whatever that means.
All we know is, we are ready for our dinner then, and ready for Mommy to get on what she calls ‘her comfy clothes’, and to sit down on the sofa so we can snuggle up next to her, Toby on one side, and me on the other.
Poor Toby had to have oral surgery about 6 weeks ago – he said he was scared and that his mouth hurt bad. He is better now. He goes back tomorrow for what is called ‘a post op follow up’ to see if a ‘fistula’ in his upper gum has closed – I don’t know what they means, but humans must since Mommy and Daddy talk about it all the time.
I have arthritis pretty badly — especially in my front legs and shoulders — but I can still give Toby a run for the money/dog treat!
Just take your medicine, keep eating, and wearing that ‘cone’ if you have to (we HATE having to sometimes wear a cone, but Mommy pets us a lot and tells us we are good boys – we love hearing that).
We are thinking of you, and howling-at-the-moon-happy that you are doing so well!!
Sending 8 paws up high fives!
Toby Blyn and Dexter Lee
p.s. Mommy says she will try to get a picture of us to you! We can be dog-pen-pals!!
Claudia says
Dear Toby Blyn and Dexter Lee,
Humans are always surprised that we know exactly when they are coming home. But we do. I’m sorry Toby had to have oral surgery. That’s no fun. And I have arthritis, too. I have to lie down a bit more gingerly these days. But I can still run and pounce and that makes my mom and dad happy.

Scout, we are so glad that things are back to normal for you, and that the pack is all together once again! (My dog Foster was worried about you, too…his arthritis has been giving him some trouble. He knows what it’s like to be a ‘senior’ dog.)

Please tell Foster I understand. Mom says I have arthritis, too. Thanks for writing to me.

Scout, I love you and am so happy you are doing much better. I’m here in Prague – where your Dad went to be in the movies! Hope it will soon be aired – can’t wait to get back home, snuggle in my own comfy chair and watch your Dad playing doctor on the screen.
Get all better very soon – your Mom needs cheering up ‘cos she feels miserable when you are sick.
Woof – don’t eat too many treats.
Your ‘travelbrit’ friend – Mary XOXOXOXO

Mom is jealous, Mary. You get to go to Prague, Dad go to go. And she says, “Why not me?” Thank you for writing me, Mary.

Scout,
Sometimes things just don’t make sense (even for people). All I can tell you is that your Mom and Dad love you so
much and they wouldn’t be “coming and going” if it was necessary to keep your Pack together and safe. All of us out here have been keeping all of you in our thoughts and hope that you can be together for along time. I am very happy to see your smiling face. So happy that you’re feeling really good again.
Meredith says
Scoutie, your Mom and Dad love you so much, but unfortunately sometimes they have to go away and work, I know you don’t like that but they have to. When they leave it doesn’t mean they don’t love you. I am so glad you are feeling better, you had all of us really worried. We all love you, well especially me as I am your Aunt so I get to love you a little bit more than everyone else.
Keep barking and pouncing.
Hugs to you from Aunt Mere
Claudia says
I miss you Aunt Meredith, can you come and visit me? You pet me and scratch me and give me kisses.

Dear Scout, all that coming and going is quite disturbing for the pack. Then you get sick. I am glad you are better now. My dog, Shelley, got in a fight and is grounded and is getting a wireless fence. He is a teenager and is in bad trouble over this. I hope your pack has a great weekend. We will be doing fence training. xoxo, olive
Claudia says
Hi Olive,
Oh no! I hope Shelly is okay. I would be in trouble if I did that, too. I know Mom would be mad. Tell Shelley I said hi.

Hi Scout, I understand exactly where you are coming from. Families I mean packs are supposed to stay together. It isn’t fair that you have to be apart so much, but the most important thing is that you always come back together because mom and dad love you so much. So have lots of fun being with your family, I mean pack. xoxo Laura
Claudia says
HI Laura,
I love my mom and dad. I’m glad we are all together right now.

Hey Scout, this is Graham here. I live in Orange County with my mom. My mom has only left me a few times in my 6 years, and I didn’t do very well. I ran out the door when the neighbor came to feed me, and I couldn’t find my mom any where! She says she won’t ever leave me again (if she can help it). We lost my big sister Annabelle a month ago, and it’s been hard on me. I looked up to Annabelle, and followed her around and did everything she told me to do. Now I’m trying to figure out who I am, and it’s kind of scary! Mom and I are going on vacation next week on a “Girls and Doggies” trip to the central California coast, and I think it will be good for us to get away. I hope you continue to get better, and that your parents stay put!
Claudia says
HI Graham,
I’m sorry about Annabelle. I understand. I lost my brother Riley last year and I still miss him. Lucky you, to go on vacation. Thanks for writing.

Janet in Rochester says
Hi, Scoutie! I’m so glad you’re feeling better! You look wonderful in your photos today. Your Mom is right – you are so photogenic! You have a very wise face too. All your Mom’s readers were worried about you last week. We feel we know you a little because your Mom writes stories about you – and posts photos too. Not so well as your Mom and Dad know you, of course, but a little anyway. And you probably already know this about girl humans – but they worry about everyone they take care of and love. They can’t help it – it’s in their DNA. So you keep on resting and eating and getting stronger. If you still have medicine to take, be brave and take it and stick close to your Mom and Dad. You’re lucky to have a family of your own – there are lots of animals out there waiting for a wonderful home of their own just like yours. But I bet you know that already too. Sending you love and tummy rubs!
Your friend Janet

Grrrr! Even though I prefer myself to be known as a big, tough German Shepherd I have to admit that I totally get this.My Dad and my Granny have always shared our time together and been there for me,but, like you,I love it when everyone is together. But now my Dad is working in another province for 3 weeks before he has some time off and has to go back. Even though my Granny said it is important not to be worried saying good bye because i’d be anxious I could just feel the wave of Sadness when my Dad said good bye and I just knew he’d be away longer and more often. Luckily my Granny does not like to leave me alone and we have a good routine although I’m trying to make a few improvements, you know a few extra treats and games, and she’s a little slow, but learning. My Granny includes you in her prayers and wishes we could all just be with our packs! I’m glad you’re feeling better Scout as I know how sensitive we are and it makes me happy your Mom knows this too, Wishing you joy, Love Blitz
gardenbug says
I was lucky. I didn’t have to spend the night away. But I was hooked up to this thing called a “drip”. I was hot so they put wet blankets all over and under me. They gave me yucky pills too, but at least they put peanut butter around them and canned dog food too! I didn’t spit out too many of them. They think I’m all better, but we have to wait a week or so to be sure. Everyone wishes I could speak the people language and explain what happened.
