The other evening, around dusk, Scout started barking while looking out the window. There was, shall we say, an extra urgency to her barks which brought me to the window to see just what the heck was going on.
An intruder was in her dog corral:
The nerve! At the end of a tough winter, that grass must have been enticing. Scout, of course, kept up her outraged barking. When I knocked on the window (these photos were all taken through the kitchen windows) the deer calmly looked at me and then resumed eating.
My initial response was that I’d never seen a deer inside of the corral before. And Don remarked dryly that he would bet they were in there more than we knew. He’s probably right. Eventually, Don gently opened the door and the deer took off over the fence.
One early morning when Don was away in California – it must have been around 4 am or so – I got up to go to the bathroom and I could see the silhouettes of deer moving quietly through the back yard. I remember it distinctly because I was half asleep and the movements of the deer seemed other-worldly and almost magical – where you’re left wondering if you dreamed the whole thing. It was real and it was indeed magical. A vivid, wonderful memory.
I love deer. They are beautiful, gentle creatures. They share this land with us.
On this Monday? Snow showers. Oh Spring, where the heck are you? I’ve been feeling the blues lately and I know it’s because I need to get outside, feel the sun and start working in the garden. This winter has seemingly gone on forever. There is much I have to do before I leave for Hartford and the lingering winter is not helping things.
Ah, well.
I won this book in a giveaway from Mary at Ms. Redo. I’ve seen it mentioned on many blogs and I must admit I’m intrigued. I look forward to exploring it. Thank you, Mary!
The crochet you see in this photo? It’s my experiment in crocheting with thread, like my grandmother used to. The problem is that the hook I am using is too big. I’ll have to buy a smaller one. Nevertheless, it’s awfully delicate and pretty.
Today’s egg cups:
Egg cups with feet. The one on the left is the real deal – made by Carlton Ware of England and called Walking Ware. Such silliness!
The one on the right is not marked as Carlton Ware, but it’s pretty cute, nonetheless.
And for those of you who read my guidelines for posting on A Favorite Thing, the part about leaving a comment was only about that particular meme. Not about my other posts! I love your comments and they make me happy, but this is pressure-free commenting zone, my friends.
Happy Monday.
Mary @ Ms. Redo says
The deer was beautiful, hope he didn’t hurt the fencing in Scout’s corral. The little piece you made is gorgeous, what an exciting new idea for your crochet projects. Hope the sun shines on you soon, we had quite the snow yesterday afternoon but the roads are clear today. Mary
Claudia says
It would be hard to hurt that chicken wire fence, Mary. Actually, the whole thing needs to be re-done.
Cranberry Morning says
Don’t you just marvel at how easily and gracefully the deer can leap back over the fence! We came home one dark night to find 5 deer lying on our front yard. It was just after we turned into our drive that the headlights shone on them and it looked like part of a Nativity scene! What beautiful creatures!
Just the other day I saw that someone had crocheted with wire, of all things. It was beautiful, and I hope I pinned it. :-)
Have a good week, Claudia.
Claudia says
They are amazingly graceful creatures. I love when they turn their backs and take off into the woods, white tails showing. So gorgeous.
Jillian's Bella Rosa Antiques says
We have several visitors like yours as well! Even though we see them all of the time we find ourselves saying “SHHHH!” There’s deer outside! and run to the window…
Thanks so much for hosting your linky party…and for stopping by my blog! enJOY your week! I also received this book recently and will be reading it sometime this summer at the lake house!
Jillian
Claudia says
We do the same thing, Jillian. One morning recently, I saw one right by the front porch! What would have happened if I invited him in?
SUSIE says
Claudia, The deer are so sweet in your pictures. I know they are making the dog edgy. We had a huge snow yesterday. 7 inches or more since it drifted. Stay safe. xoxo,Susie
Claudia says
Oh my! 7 inches! I’m sorry – I hope that it’s beautiful, at least!
Ann says
Glad Scout is on guard! What am I doing today, snowed in at 1515! I am going to have to find someone to dig me out, the garage is down a long alley, and it is drifted over…..we should be out in the sunshine working in our yards!
Claudia says
Oh boy, you guys got walloped! I won’t complain about our coming snow, I think it will be mixed with rain. I hope someone has dug you out by now, Ann!
Diane says
“Pressure-free commenting zone–” what a fun phrase! Love the deer. I occasionally see one here in suburbia too. We had snow overnight here– drat!! Are we headed for Xmas or Easter??
Claudia says
That makes 3 of you so far that just got snow!
Brenda says
Dear Claudia
Actually, when I saw the white florettes,
their lacey look, I loved them!
Of course you will want to do them in a smaller hook size,
but don’t discount how pretty these are.
Just so pretty! Brenda
Claudia says
They are pretty! I’m curious to see how they’ll look with a smaller hook.
Judy Clark says
Cannot imagine having deer in your front yard! They are such beautiful creatures.
Judy
Claudia says
They are all over the place here, Judy. I really love them. I just don’t like it when people shoot them or hit them with their cars. That makes me sad.
Deb says
Aren’t deer the best? They are so peaceful and move about with such grace. I adore them!
We had 8″ of snow in KC yesterday. In late March? Crazy! But when I went out to shovel that heavy white stuff, I kept reminding myself that spring is here …. in a few days it will be 60! SO READY!
I have read One Thousand Gifts. It was initially a difficult read for me – and I had to make several attempts, for Ann’s writing is so poetic. While I was recuperating from one of my surgeries, I picked it up one more time – and it “clicked” and I read through it and savored it when I needed it most. It was life-changing. Gratitude through ALL things is such a refreshing way to look at life – although I still need to remind myself of that often.
Claudia says
More snow! Sounds like the midwest got walloped!
Donnamae says
Those egg cups are adorable…so unexpected. I think you would need an 8 ft. fence to keep the deer out…hope Scout wasn’t too put out! And…I think we are all going stir crazy because of the length of this winter…spring cannot come fast enough. I, too, need to dig in the dirt…that’s why I have so many houseplants! ;)
Claudia says
Yes, at least an 8 foot fence. Usually, they walk around the outside of the fence. But if you’re hungry, you’re hungry!
Paula says
I love seeing deer! We have had deer in our yard, leaping effortlessly over our fence like it is nothing! Better deer in the yard then bears, I think! We have had those too.
The crocheted flowers look like snowflakes that could melt away – so delicate and beautiful!
And those egg cups! I am really enjoying your collection. I have a collection of coffee creamers – I love seeing collections of items that can actually be used. I have only used an egg cup a couple of times (when traveling in Ireland). I must admit, I made a tremendous mess – there is an art to taking off the top of a soft boiled egg!
Claudia says
There is indeed, Paula! Eggshell falling in the soft boiled egg isn’t fun!
missy george says
I love seeing the deer..except when they are eating my flowers…We had a few inches of snow over night but it’s beautiful.
Claudia says
They always chomp on my Black-eyed Susans – probably because they are on the edge of the garden.
nancy says
We often get deer on our property. Civilization has crowded them out and they have to go where they can find something to eat. We have small herds here that number in the teens. They are not afraid of people, which is probably not a good thing. They are beautiful.
I love those happy feet on the egg cups. So cute!
nancyr
Claudia says
Winter must be very hard on them.
Betsy says
Beautiful deer photos. We have lots of deer around here too. Some people love them, others despise them for eating all of their plants. My thinking is that they were here before us and we’re chasing them out of their natural home. I, too, am very ready for spring, althought we have had a very mild winter here. I’m just ready for some outside activity!
Beautiful crochet. I love to crochet tablecloths, doilies, etc. I thought it was a lost art, but seems to be gaining in popularity again.
Blessings,
Betsy
Claudia says
I feel the same way about the deer and all the other animals around here. They were here first! That’s why I say that we share this land. I’m glad they’re here.
Sue ( wicked faerie queen) says
What an amazing site! I just adore deer. Unfortunately, even though we have a farm, with three huge dogs they do not come near. I know what you mean about the magic of a deer. Sometimes I am driving and out of the corner of my eye I will see a couple eating in a field and they are so magestic and move so softly they are like an illusion.
Claudia says
Many is the time that Scout has scared them away – just the other day, in fact.
Robyn says
Oh the deer is beautiful.. I would love to look out my window and see one in my yard but I dont’ think my dogs would be too happy about it either…and those egg cups are adorable!
Claudia says
One of my favorite sights, Robyn.
Suzan says
i should have remembered that you have been sharing your egg cups with us!! Adorable!!
But at first – I thought they were bulb pots!! You could put saran wrap in the bottom and use them with one bulb each :-}} Too cute!
Claudia says
Neat idea, Suzan!
Suzan says
Also- GREAT pictures of the deer!! Love watching deer roam as well! If there just were not so many killed on the roads!!
Claudia says
I know – it breaks my heart when I see that. I can’t bear to look.
Patti says
Our backyard is fenced and the deer jump over the fence all the time, especially in the summer when the veg garden is at it’s peak. In the winter we have our bird feeder just outside our living room window so we can watch the birds and the deer think it’s for them! We have a crowd of 4-5 almost everynight like it is a dessert buffet! They love to eat off the ground what the birds have thrown down to the ground. I love all of your egg cups and I think it is a very unique item to collect. ~Hugs, Patti
Claudia says
I love the idea of the deer eating the bird seed, Patti!
Laura says
I am longing for spring and the warm sun on my face, too Claudia. It is cold and snowy here today. We used to have a lot of deer in our yard when I lived in North Carolina. They would clatter across the pool deck at night.
Hugs,
Laura
Claudia says
Oh for some sun!!!
Nancy Blue Moon says
The snow started here sometime during the night and is still coming down..I love seeing the deer too..They are so beautiful..we also have black bears here..I have seen them down the road not far from here but never in our yard thank goodness..I love living in the country! Those egg cups would make me want to draw a face on my eggs..lol
Claudia says
We have black bears, too. One day Don was in the bathroom and he quietly asked me to come in the room. A bear cub was right outside the house – by the time I got there, the cub had turned around and was leaving. We were amazed! We also knew that mama had to be nearby! That’s the only time we’ve seen one.
Linda Petersen says
Hello Claudia~~~Time has certainly been flying by & I haven’t commented on your posts for awhile! So~~~first of all~~~Congrats to Don for his latest role! Mable’s new cover is very cute & clever. The eggcups are just as cute as they can be. All of them! Our weather is up & down. I put all my winter clothes away except for a few things. My sister said that was a useless thing to do because she thinks we will have one more snow. I’m more optimistic. So are my daffodils. I have the book too & haven’t read it yet. Looks like you are moving right along on the other book series. Enjoying them as much as you thought you would? The deer are beautiful! Scout would probably like to have a “No Vacancy” sign on the corral :0). Getting ready to pick up my new baby chicks on Wednesday. Just four of them, but that gives us more than enough eggs to share. Ok~~~Have a lovely day! Oh yes, my sister had a Chatty Cathy doll. Of course the talking was garbled after a few weeks because we pulled the string too hard.
XO, Linda
Claudia says
I am really enjoying the series, Linda. She’s an awfully good writer. Oh, sweet baby chicks! I bet they will be so darn cute.
JoAnn says
Lovely photos of the deer. We have a lot that roam through our neighborhood and we live right smack in town – but have woods nearby.
The egg cups are so cute – I’ve not seen any with feet before. Have fun with your crocheting, it looks lovely even with the larger hook.
Claudia says
Thank you, JoAnn. My sister has deer, too, and they are in the middle of a crowded suburb – but there is a nature preserve there as well.
Ann says
So lucky to share your land with the Deer, Claudia! Beautiful pictures of such sweet creatures. Hope that spring weather comes to MHC before you leave. Ann
gardenbug says
My mother crocheted with thread. She made tablecloths, made butterflies on handkerchief corners, made what she called a “muffin cozy” to keep hot muffins warm after they were removed from the oven. Now I’m a third child, so how did she do all that? She also embroidered and read a great deal. All this was after work! Sigh….
Sarah ~ Magnolia's Attic says
Hehe, those feet in their Mary Janes are just too cute! I’d love to see deer just beyond my fence, but we just get the little guys — raccoons and possums, and a fox one time! Deer are so sweet; I know you (and Scout, too) enjoy looking at them!
Haworth says
I love the way deer move when they feel safe… so slowly and with such grace. And then at the first sound they just bound like they have springs on their feet! Have you ever read Bambi? I’s told in Bambi’s voice and is very dear and not really a chidren’s book. I found an old paperback copy at a sale and snapped it up. Those little egg cups are so silly and cute. I love them! I think these are my favorites, so far! By the way, your ‘lace’ crocheting is beautiful. Once you get a smaller hook I’ll bet you won’t be able to stop. There’s a lovely pattern on Ravelry.com for a crocheted lace bookmark. I can send you the pattern on email. I’ve made several and it’s really fun and quick to make.
