I started a new puzzle the other day but I never got to it yesterday.
It was a full day, with a first read-through of Jane Eyre in the morning and 3 hours of coaching in the afternoon. I’m tired.
I have more coaching to do later this morning.
The actors are very nice and eager to figure out the dialects.
It takes such concentrated effort to coach one-on-one. But when you’re in the same room as the coachee, it’s easier to pick up on facial expressions or frustration or whatever mood the actor is in. It’s much, much harder to do when coaching via Zoom. With Jane Eyre, I was coaching actors sitting in a board room and they were quite far away.
By the way, after I finished for the day I told Don I was absolutely sure I was speaking too loudly the whole time I was coaching. Not on purpose, of course, but I think that “They’re far away and I have to talk loudly” feeling crept into my voice. I’ll try to do better today.
On my break between the read-through and coaching sessions, I ran outside to water everything, folded clothes that had just come out of the dryer, and made a quick lunch. Don had gone out to take some pictures.
I’m coaching for two hours today, so it won’t be quite as tiring.
Then Jim again, later in the week.
The theme for this week is Zoom Dialect Coaching.
Don mentioned that it’s dark now when he gets up. And we both keep mentioning that it’s getting darker much earlier in the evening now. Sigh. Summer, you’ve been a huge challenge, but I’m not sure I’m ready for you to go. I think it’s fortunate that I’m coaching now, just as I was last year around this time when I coached during September – December. I’m so busy that I won’t have the time to be sad for very long..
And the light is different. You can tell that we’re heading into Autumn.
Stay safe.
Happy Wednesday.

I hope you’re able to have some restful time with fewer coaching hours today.

no wonder you were tired … your “break” and day were busy! it sounds like the coaching went well, though. may that be so and continue. best wishes and prayers for more work for both you and don.
hope you also have time to do things like work on that puzzle (it looks like a fun one).
been noticing the change of light here, too. beautiful, but too often things that remind me about the passage of time make me sad. also, i wish we as a country could settle on one time and skip daylight saving time starting/stopping twice a year.
when i said we had a soft, gentle rain over several hours recently, that is what it was … in closer to ten hours, we only got .57 of an inch! still grateful for it and still enjoyed it, though! hope it’s headed your way, claudia (and anyone else who needs it).
need to get going on stuff here.
hope you all have a nice, easy day and stay safe.

Claudia says
Glad you at least got some rain, Kathy!
Stay safe.

I live in AZ and we do not change our clocks. I found this which may change things for you Did the Senate pass the daylight savings bill?
Late last month, the Senate stunned the nation when it approved a measure to make daylight saving time permanent across the U.S. starting next year. The bipartisan legislation, named the Sunshine Protection Act, would ensure Americans would no longer have to change their clocks twice a year.Apr 11, 2022
kathy in iowa says
oh, thank you, olivia! i will check into that nicely-named act.
hope you are well, happy and staying comfortable in arizona!
thanks again.

Love the puzzle…I teach via FaceTime…after awhile, it is easy…in Indiana, I worked with granddaughters in person…Covid came…that went to FaceTime along with the two little grandsons here in Florida…I took on two students…one East Coast and one West…moving here. I now do the grand in Indiana FaceTime…and have a new one East coast…have decided that is it exc little boys here…I did not like it when we started…however, it just became easier and easier…now…could I do a group at once…no way my friend…you are amazing as always…
Claudia says
But speech/dialect coaching involves seeing the face, what it is doing, how sounds are being shaped, and helping the person being coached find the right shapes. Very difficult via Zoom. It just is.
Stay safe, Brenda.
Brenda says
Oh I agree with you. I could not do it. I taught drama for years and was not easy…those little South Carolina kids doing Shakespeare. So cute …
I admire you and what you are doing.
Claudia says
Thank you, Brenda!
Ellen D. says
The one advantage to Zoom is you can stay home to do your coaching! How nice to be able to stay in your own home instead of all the traveling back and forth to whatever city the actors are in.
I can understand there are a lot of disadvantages considering the need for you to hear and see them clearly. The Zoom camera and sound won’t give you the detail you need, I suspect.
Hope it works out, Claudia!
Claudia says
Yes, that part of it is lovely!
Thanks, Ellen.
Stay safe.

I’ve noticed the light is different and change in the air. Not cool yet but a cooling effect. I’m ready for a pretty Fall. Maybe I’ll take Mom for an overnight in the mountains.
Brenda says
Oh Linda. Fun. Which mountains. I have lived in Florida for over one year.
Linda MacKean says
I live in North Georgia so we are only an hour or so from the Mountains. Not sure where yet, going to look for handicap friendly places.
Claudia says
Wouldn’t that be lovely!
Stay safe, Linda.

We’ve noticed the same thing with the morning and evening light. Sunsets are earlier — no less beautiful, but much earlier. I wake, look at the clock and it’s still dark. I’m not ready.
Good luck with the coaching. I would think that the ZOOM coaching could be a little frustrating, all ear and not as much eye checks, as you said. But I know you’ve got it down pat!
Claudia says
It can be very frustrating, but I do my best to make it work.
Thanks, Jeanie.
