Early morning in the den.
Our early morning routine: Don makes the first cup of coffee (pour over), I open all the blinds, he brings my coffee to me in the den. He retreats to his spot on the loveseat in the living room, I sit in my chair in the den, and we slowly wake up, doing whatever early morning reading we’re into at the moment. An hour or so later, I get up from my chair and make the second cup of coffee for both of us. Since Don came home from NYC, we’ve been taking our second cup outside – either in the Secret Garden or on the porch. We sit and talk and listen to the birds and the bullfrog and the sound of the river across the road. We hatch plans for the day or, lately, for our trip.
Routines are comforting, aren’t they? For many months, we were apart, so our routines included a morning FaceTime call.
It’s September. I can’t say I’m ready, but I’ve been noticing the changes in the light that herald the onset of autumn. It’s most definitely on the horizon.
I mowed a lot yesterday because it was only in the 70s and I wanted to take advantage of the cooler weather. Plus, as I mowed the front lawn, it started to drizzle – very lightly – and I played that game in which I tried to outrun the rain. I had a hat on and the light rain felt good and I managed to finish before the rain got any heavier. Claudia for the win.
I’m going to watch the service for Senator McCain this morning. I want to hear Barack Obama’s eulogy. I listened to Joe Biden speak the other day in Phoenix and I cried. I expect to cry again today.
The end of an era. At least, for now.
Happy Saturday.

Have a lovely Saturday!
Claudia says
You too, Debbie!

Watching Biden’s eulogy, I cried too. I also cried for my country. We need a President that we respect and who represents all Americans. To paraphrase JFK, we need someone who asks what he can do for our country and not a president who asks what the country can do for him. I value your opinions and I enjoy your posts but I certainly don’t envy all that grass you have to mow. You have a lovely home and garden and I am glad that you and your husband enjoy it together.
Claudia says
The amount of grass is worth it. We don’t have neighbors right next to us and we have SPACE!

I love, love, love your home. It is so comforting and welcoming. The soft glow of the lighting and the well loved objects make one feel loved and cherished, a safe place just “to be”. I can’t really find the words to describe the feeling. You can find a lot of houses before finding a home. You have a home. They are very different things.
Claudia says
Oh, Christine, that’s the nicest thing anyone could say to me! Thank you so very much for your kind words.

agree …
happy saturday, everyone.

I’m watching John McCain’s funeral now and it’s so moving. It’s a pretty day here and I’ll get out a bit later to clean up some old planters that need emptying and cleaning. The yard around the duplex is looking a bit cluttered. Nice to have cooler temps today.
I had a fun outing with my friend yesterday. A big Antique Mall and I found a really cute flower frog to add to my collection. Lunch was good and conversation even better. I’m hoping to be able to do this more often. Take care and enjoy your weekend!
Claudia says
I’m so glad you had some fun yesterday Linda! You needed to get out with a good friend!

What fun to plan your trip, Claudia! I loved planning ours. I asked the daughters what they wanted to see, but they didn’t give me much of a list. So, I cobbled together an itinerary of what I wanted to see and they were quite happy with it. I know them well enough to gauge what they would like.
Claudia says
I know some places I definitely want to visit, but for the rest, we’ll just explore!
Donnamae says
Yes…to comforting routines. Yes…to the mundane and to the everyday tasks that keep us sane. Glad you got your mowing done. We tackled another bed….mostly hostas and ferns, hydrangeas…weeded and mulched. Only one more to go this year. Just waiting for this infernal rain to end.
Enjoy your cooler temps! ;)
Claudia says
I just weed whacked and got at least 6 mosquito bites! It’s humid and it’s been humid and, of course, rainy. Too many mosquitoes this year!

All my life I have had dreams of a little cottage in the woods for myself alone. I am so envious of yours. It is so nice to see all the parts of it so beautifully set and arranged.
I could not watch McCain’s funeral as much as I would like to hear Obama. I am a military brat and wife, these things are too close to home. My father, my uncles and my Dad are probably turning over in their graves because of the neo-nazis in power. My two fathers and several uncles have served in the military and I think they probably feel the same.
Claudia says
I think, as a military brat, you would have been quite moved by the funeral. It was beautifully done.
Christina says
Routines are comforting, I wouldn’t want to be be without mine.
I meant to leave you a comment on your travel planning post but never quite managed. Maybe you have booked your flights to Edinburgh already? If not, I can recommend the train. It is enjoyable, relaxing and you get to see the countryside, too. Also, no long airport security queues. I have no good suggestions for accommodation in Edinburgh but will ask a couple of friends. Have you tried Airbnb? So exciting, planning a trip! x
Claudia says
We’re flying from our local airport directly to Edinburgh on Norwegian Air. They fly to Dublin, Shannon and Edinburgh. So that’s why Edinburgh is on our itinerary. We’ll take the train down to London from there. I’ve done it before, though it was many years ago.
We’ll probably fly from Paris to Edinburgh for the trip home.

I also watched. and I cried. we’re seeing less and less of the likes of that statesman.
Joe Biden and a few others. and we need them and their integrity more than ever.
I love your morning routine. very comforting. pretty and cozy pictures. xo
Claudia says
I yearn for the days when those wonderful statesmen held office.
Thanks, Tammy.

We did not get any rain here in Queens. Our grass and flowers could have benefited from some rain.

We had very light rain, Marilyn and it didn’t last for long!

Ah…Mockingbird Cottage in the early morning light…how sweet!…I love your morning routine with Don!…

Thank you, Nancy!

At the last minute, I just couldn’t watch the McCain service; tired of crying already too much. But later in the day, spending a lot of time with excerpts/video clips and so moved by the speeches/tributes. You’re right about saying it’s the end of an era. McCain would bring us back to the America we know, each time we began to feel lost in this awful, current administration. After the words of our former presidents at his funeral, just shaking my head and saying to myself (in despair), reminded of the kind of leadership we once had, “We need a leader. We don’t have a leader.” Ship without a sail.
Claudia says
I’m glad we watched all 2 1/2 hours of it. It was extraordinary.
Megan Drennan says
I watched the memorial service and was very touched and then reminded suddenly of the emotions of Princess Diana’s funeral(I am in no way a royalist being Scots/Irish and living in Wales) but the sense of a good person having left us was strong. I am confident that in the U.S. you will all find the energy among you to mend together things when the time comes. This country is in a bit of a mess as well, Brexit etc, just hope Scotland is Independent when you get here! This is why we all need a safe place to retreat to like your lovely home,it mends our soul. Boy is this deep! will go back to watching the goldfinches.
