Morning sunlight.
Goodness, do I hear lots of bird song this morning! So beautiful. Such a harbinger of Spring.
When I hear it, my shoulders drop. I smile. I feel like I’m being let out of prison. I’m not exaggerating. Though I love being in my house, the absence of bird song, of working outdoors (other than shoveling snow), of the kind of connection I feel when both indoors and outdoors are part of my life, really wears me down. I feel hopeful again.
Spring means more to me with each passing year. Yes, I know that it will rain a lot. The ground will be muddy. I don’t care. I’ll begin to see the rebirth of my gardens and of our woods. I’ll be able to walk around, noting signs of life. I’ll start to get my porch back together for another three seasons of outdoor living. No seed sowing until May 1st, but I’ll be planting my impatiens and my hanging pots in the meantime.
Oh, it will be heaven.
This is that strange time in our landscape when there are big swaths of brown – and even green – grass showing. When the garden is no longer covered in snow. At the same time, there are big piles of snow along the driveway and in all those spots which became deposit zones for freshly shoveled snow. It’s a graphic display of season-straddling.
I have some errands to run today and some chores to do inside. But I can open the windows and air out the house while I’m doing them.
How is the weather in your neck of the woods?
Happy Thursday.
Tina-Marie Hamilton says
Glad that you are getting a little sunshine and a hint of spring! Finally, sun for a few days in Coastal Virginia, and I hate to say it, a high of 77 tomorrow. But, the rain returns. It has rained since last May ( no climate change, huh!) However, as a teacher, we would could have used a few snow days. The viruses have been around the building, multiple times, all of February and March! April 1st, hurry!
Claudia says
Yes, some real cold weather would have helped! (Though it didn’t help here in my house!)
Janet K. says
Here in Brandon Florida, a suburb of Tampa, it is an absolutely beautiful day. Our birds are singing too and there is a cool breeze. We are enjoying our spring flowers and I’m going to plant some seeds today hopefully. I’m so glad your spring is coming. You have endured a wicked winter but at least you can be hopeful now. Enjoy your day !
Claudia says
I know Brandon – my BIL used to work there! Enjoy your beautiful day, Janet.
Shanna says
Here in Daytona, the motorcycles are in bloom and the steady rumble of motorcycle-song accosts the ears, day and night…night and day. Oh please, let them migrate away soon.
Claudia says
We deal with the same thing here in the spring and summer. In fact, I heard an extremely loud one last night! They drive me nuts!
Shanna says
yeah, but I’m talkin thousands of motorcycles—it’s Bike Week (at least 10 days, twice a year) in Daytona. Ugh.
Claudia says
Oh my. That’s not fun!
Donnamae says
Well…the sun is shining this morning…high of 61 predicted. Woohoo! I’m hoping to open a window or two later this afternoon. The ground is still frozen, so we are under a flood watch due to melting snow. Tomorrow…high of 39 and snow flurries…go figure.
But, thoughts of spring are very strong. We are going to make an action plan of outdoor projects that we hope to get done this year. Have to have a plan…or nothing gets done. Hope we can start on that today. Enjoy yours! ;)
Claudia says
We will hit the 60s tomorrow…actually we hit them today. But then it will be back down in the mid 40s on Saturday.
kathy in iowa says
it’s very windy here in des moines today. i just took a little video of a squirrel eating something while trying to get shelter from the wind – sitting straight up with his/her back braced against a tree, tail and fur being pushed around by the wind. hearing the birds sing and talk here, too (i love that). more light rain – and a little snow if the temperature drops – to arrive this afternoon, but next week’s low temperatures are to be above freezing!!! i’m glad and grateful for that for everyone … people and animals … and I’m ready to open up some windows and air out my home!
good luck with the errands and chores.
happy day, everyone!
kathy in iowa
Claudia says
I have almost all the windows open today!
Chy says
We finally have warmth but with that comes mucky roads and puddles every where. A small price to pay for what is warming up underneath! It’s 9 a.m. here and I’m sitting at my office desk, with sun streaming in and the windows opening, with birds chirping outside and a squirrel running up and down the big tree. Love it!!
Have a great day!
X Chy
Claudia says
Same here. I just sunk in the mud by our trash can. There’s been a lot of melt lately! Have a lovely day, Chy!
Carol O'Connell says
You are so lucky! Up here in the frozen north-Alberta, Canada, we are a LONG way from spring weather. I am quite honestly done with snow and cold…. Hoping for a speedy warm-up ! Enjoy your warmth and send us a puff of warm air!
Claudia says
It takes a lot longer to thaw up in Alberta! I’ve been there in the the spring! Hoping you get warmer temps soon.
Kay says
Oh, I second all the emotions you write about today. When winter sets in and the morning is totally devoid of birdsong is the saddest time of the year for me. Today it’s supposed to approach 60 here in SE WI!! The snow is melting so fast there are flood warnings all over the area. Most store parking lots have mountain ranges of snow that are melting faster every day so that you must trod carefully between the ever growing rivers running across the lot. My favorite part of early spring every year is when the red-winged blackbirds linger to spend a few days in our trees on their way to the area wetlands. I just love their pretty songs.
Claudia says
Have you seen them yet, Kay?
Kay says
Not yet. Usually it’s towards the end of March, early April. They always show up.
Claudia says
Soon, then!
Dee Dee says
It’s 8 degrees Celsius or about 46 F here in northern England. It’s late afternoon and there are cloudy blue skies and the wind is finally dropping. Last night we had Storm Gareth and it’s blown the doors off my greenhouse and uprooted my ornamental archway in the back garden. There’s a job for the weekend!
This part of Britain has lovely green fields and moorland (think Bronte type landscape) but it does rain a lot and is consequently quite damp.
Dee Dee
Claudia says
That’s quite a storm, Dee Dee!
Priscilla says
Well, here in San Diego, it’s supposed to be 68* !!! Getting ready to go for a nice walk & listen to the parrots squawking!! It’s so nice to have some sunshine again, as we’ve really had a very wet winter, but so need it.
Claudia says
Winters weren’t very wet when I lived there. But the weather in San Diego (and everywhere) has changed. Hope you had a nice walk!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I’m San Jose, CA and it is sunny and cool. Lovely weather. Long day of flying and after a nights rest we are still taking it easy today. Some time with Ashleigh and napping is on the docket. Happy to hear you can see signs of spring!
Claudia says
So glad you’re with Ashleigh, Linda!
Wendy T says
Alameda is checking in with high 60’s going into mid-70’s, until the next rains arrive mid- next week. Clear blue skies. I’m going to throw open the windows and air out also. Lots of work to be done out in the garden, but also lots of inside work. Maybe I’ll take some paperwork out to the patio? Hmm, that’s an idea…
Claudia says
We hit 60 today and it will be warmer tomorrow! I had all the windows open and it was heavenly.
Wendy T says
Nice fresh air blowing through! My cats flocked to the open windows and pressed their noses against the screens.
Claudia says

Chris K in Wisconsin says
Near Madison, WI, we are to hit 62* today! It is 59* right now, so sounds like it might make it. The flooding is scary though. Many streets in our town are closed due to the high water. BUT, we have a yard full of ROBINS today!!!! What a beautiful sight! Back to seasonal temps tomorrow through the weekend (low to mid 40’s). But we have been below normal temps for so long, even that will seem balmy!
Claudia says
Robins! Wonderful! We hit 60 today and it will be even warmer tomorrow, then back down to 40s on Saturday.
tammy j says
finally! NO MORE pneumonia! last xray this week showed it gone! thank GOD!
I truly thought one night that I had ‘bought the farm!’ isn’t that what they say?
anyway I’m grateful to still be here. still awfully weak but hoping to build back the strength.
and just in time for Spring! I’m so happy for you and your plans.
and I’m happy for me too! LOL. xo
kathy in iowa says
to tammy j …
oh, wow … bet that was scary. glad you made it! i will pray for your continued recovery. may it be quick and complete!
kathy in iowa
Claudia says
So glad to hear this news, Tammy! Huzzah! If you’re still weak, take it slow, my friend. Don’t rush your recovery. xoxo
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Tammy, I was worried when you had not commented for quite a while. So happy to hear you are on the mend. It has been a brutal winter. Do continue to take it easy for a while longer. There is no rush now that you are feeling better!!!!
Wendy T says
Tammy, so glad you’re feeling better. My friend’s son caught pneumonia twice, within four months of each bout, so you be careful!
tammy j says
thank you ALL! this community is just the best!!!
I’m 73. and I expect to bounce back like I always did. in other words FAST.
and then a rude awakening… ‘it just ain’t gonna happen!’ LOL.
but Spring is on its way. what a wonderful season to be well again.
and I plan to enjoy it! we ALL will! thanks again.
Claudia says
Much love to you, Tammy.

Tana says
So glad you are feeling better! The Spring will help you continue to heal!
tammy j says
thank you Tana. Spring and new beginnings!
it’s always exciting. :)
Judy says
The sun just lifted my spirits today! I feel like I came out of hibernation. Some snow left on the mountain but, oh that sun!
Claudia says
Exactly, we’ve come out of hibernation!
Jan says
It’s going to be around 35°C (95°F) here in South Australia for the next 5 days, hopefully after that it is going to start cooling down. It has been a very long, hot, dry summer here and I am completely over it and can’t I wait for the cooler, rainy days of autumn to arrive.
Claudia says
I bet you can’t wait for Fall! Too hot!
Tana says
Our weather is warming up and I started thinking about doll houses too. We have one that my daughter had when she was little and I am thinking of putting it out on the covered porch for the Spring and Summer. Just thinking, mind you. But I do like to imagine that the garden fairies would like it too. I have just the place for it. Maybe I am going a little squirrelly in my old age. But if I don’t do it now, when?
Claudia says
I think we’re allowed to be a little squirrely in our old age, Tana. Go for it!
Melanie says
Your weather has been a little bit warmer than ours. It was in the low 50’s today and as delightful as that sounds, unfortunately it wasn’t due to rain and very high winds (up to 55 mph). I had a window open for a few minutes today but it got too cold so I had to close it. Back down into the 30’s tomorrow with a rain-snow mix in the morning. :-(
Claudia says
We have rain headed in for tonight and tomorrow – maybe even thunderstorms, which would make sense as it will be unseasonably warm.
Marilyn says
The crocus are starting to show their heads in my neighborhood. Our crocus come up in the backyard first, since the front is shadier.
Marilyn
Claudia says
A good sign, Marilyn!
Anne V says
I was stuck in traffic in Wappinger Falls, NY today, the windows were down and I was watching and listening to about a dozen red wing blackbirds – what a treat! So, I am sure they are in your neighborhood, also, Claudia.
Claudia says
They must be but I haven’t seen them yet. Hurrah!
Nancy Blue Moon says
It was a beautiful day in Pennsylvania today!..Warm, wonderful, birds singing and sun shining!…Expecting more of the same tomorrow!!
Claudia says
Isn’t it lovely? And boy, do we need it!
Leslie says
Good morning from Oakland Park, Florida. 82 degrees and hazy, which we like because the clouds keep it cool. It’s been inspired gardening weather. Caterpillars have devoured the first crop of milkweed, pipe vine and passionflower. Butterflies are frolicking around the fire bush. We are on the lookout for hummingbirds. So good to read that bodies and spirits are on the mend from a long winter, each day unique and precious. Such a good question Claudia!
Claudia says
It sounds absolutely lovely, Leslie! Thank you!
jeanie says
Season straddling. A perfect definition.
We are filled with brown here. The snow is gone, except in the big plow drifts, most common in shopping center parking lots — and even those are going down fast the past couple of days. The rain didn’t help. It didn’t help coming in my basement either but I’ve learned its path and how to keep things off the floor. More rain to come and hopefully the ground will absorb it. I’m getting tired of sopping it up with towels, wringing them out and going again.
But when there is sun, I’ve experienced that same feeling — Get out of Jail Free! But we’ve paid for it dearly and done our time.
Claudia says
We have a damp basement, like many older homes around here. Ours was built in 1891. It’s a stone foundation and that doesn’t help. Fortunately, we have a sump pump for when it gets a bit out of hand!
